View 3 RepliesBefore I was forced to delete (actually rename) my .gnome2 directory in order to get a fresh start, I had an icon on my panel (task-bar? SSSsssss ) that would kill the next window that I clicked. Useful when a program stops responding. My problem: Rebuilding my panel, I don't recall the name of that utility. I had originally copied it off one either the Applications menu or the System menu but I can't find it now.My questions:What is the name of that kill-next-clicked-window utility? What directory (presumably some place under .gnome2) holds the links to the programs on the panels? My search under the renamed .gnome2 directory yields a lot of nearly empty directories and nothing I can identify as my objective. (In case I get it into my head to manually edit the panel - not likely.)
View 8 Replies View Relatedi was referring to an article given in following website.[URL] I was surprise to know that i can kill all running processes by using kill 0. However when i tried running the command nothing happened.
my machine details:

The only way I know is to use exit command to come out.
Is there some way to close the Xterm windows using the GUI (the mouse pointer)? Killing a lot of windows would be easier that way.
I am using Tiny Window Manager.
Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.
My env show:
Code:

I'm trying to figure out how to operate a rather large Java program, 'prog'. If I go to its /bin/ dir and configure its setenv.sh and prog.sh to use local directories and my current user account. Then I try to run it via "./prog.sh start". Here are all the relevant bits of prog.sh:
[code]...
When I actually do ./prog.sh start, it starts. But I can't find it at all on the process list. Nor can I kill it manually, using the same command the shell script uses. But I can tell it's running, because if I do ./prog.sh stop, it stops (and some temporary files elsewhere clean themselves out).
[code]...
the process is running yet not in any way listed by the system. I can't find it in ps or /proc/, nor can I kill it. But the shell script can still stop it properly. So my question is, how can something like this happen? Is the process supremely hidden, actually unlisted, or am I just missing it in some fashion? I'm trying to figure out what makes this program tick.
I am working on a set up, and I like to be able to toggle compiz on and off, or toggle dualscreen on and off. The thing is, I also have conky on my desktop as well as a terminal window embedded in my desktop (that requires compiz). So, when I turn comiz off, or resize my desktop, I want to be able to reposition conky/embedded-terminal and the terminals position is relative to my conky position and the size of my virtual desktop.
I can do this all fine, except that to reposition the terminal I need to kill it then reopen it. But if I kill gnome-terminal it kills ALL gnome-terminals instead of just my embedded one. How can I specifically close my embedded one and leave any others untouched? Lets say that the title of my embedded terminal is "trans777"Also, the trans777 titled gnome-terminal will be killed when compiz is not running.
Today I run OpenOffice.org extensions update and it freezed fter showing me that everything was successful. When i xkilled it it refused tolaunch without any problem indication.killall soffice.bin didn't report "No process found" after 1,2,3...20 times. So I tried killall soffice.bin -i
Code:
$ sudo killall soffice.bin -i
Kill soffice.bin(3319) ? (y/N) y

I have a Debian Etch system. From the Gnome file manager, I can easily browse to SMB file shares on the network. So the SMB redirector is apparently present on the system.
Question - how do I access SMB shares from the command line? smbmount command is not available, trying to cd into a smb://... path gives a "No such file" error. I'm not looking for a persistent mapping, just a brief look. Better yet if root access is not necessary.
the process is mcelog. When I do as root kill -9 2323 which is pid of mcelog the process is not killed. I tried doing the same from top, press K and enter pid of mcelog. doing ps auwx | grep mcelog I see there are several results. I tried killing all of them like kill -9 2355 2341 3425 2345. But re-running the above commands still shows them as running. How else would I troubleshoot this to avoid restarting of the box.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had to reinstall 10.04 because I got an error, waiting for root device. And I figured I knew why I got this error: I changed my xconf.cfg (or whatever the file is in /etc/x11/) -- So this time I downloaded the 64 bit, because I have a 64 bit computer, so though, might as well get it! I've narrowed the problem down to this:
After I install nvidia settings (the x server or whatever?) And change my view to TwinView (I have my laptop monitor and an external monitor), and save the config file, this happens. I will do some more testing, but here is the whole error message: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system not wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)

i created an ubuntu 10.10 live system on an usb stick last weekend using the build in startup disk creator. The System itself is working quite fine, but since I don't want to install ubuntu to the computer I'm using the stick with, I want to get rid of the start window (TRY OUT or INSTALL). How can I achieve this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhile installing Lubuntu 10.04, I opted for Auto login, but now I want to go for it.
How can I restore that option, so that I get the login window on start up.
I just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed the newest version of Songbird, it worked for two days. Now when I click Songbird, it tells me it's starting down in the Window List, but it never pops up. I've tried all three methods from here to install it afterwards... none of them I got to work. Anyone have a clue what could possibly going on? This is on Ubuntu 9.10(32bit)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..
Why its not coming in my PC..
my computer configuration :
Windows XP, SP 2

I want to shift my OS to Ubuntu completely.
I'm trying to run the "Login Window" application in Ubuntu to allow me to setup automatic login. When I select it all I get is a message in the task bar stating an application is starting then that disappears but the app does not start.I've also tried starting it from the command line using gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup but this has the same result and does not yield any more clues to the problemMy next thought was to reinstall gdm but I'm not sure about that.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIn the murky world of X11, window managers, session managers and desktop environments I cannot seem to figure out how to achieve the following in Squeeze:
1. Leave Gnome installed, but prevent it from launching when typing startx
2. Have both X11 and my prefered default window manager (blackbox) startup when I type startx (or similar)
My ultimate goal is to leave Gnome installed but "dormant" and when I do a remote ssh -X be able to use X11 forwarding with blackbox.
