View 2 RepliesI use NetworkManager to handle my net connections and it's applet that allows me to control everything from the gui is called nm-applet. I was able to edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.fluxbox so that nm-applet starts when fluxbox does and away I go. From runlevel 3 that is.
On my laptop I like to boot into runlevel 4 for various reasons. When I start a fluxbox session from runlevel 4 this doesn't happen. What file do I have to edit to get this to start from runlevel 4?
Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.
My env show:
Code:
The Xemacs install on Debian ( Bug written ) Install and configuration of Xemacs from source. A better understanding of the Debian upgrade process.
installed corectly the program, but when I start it, it starts to integrate to the kernel, I got error and this is the log.

I've gotten everything working on my laptop except the webcam. I'm trying to use webkam (from kde repo) but the launcher starts up but the program doesn't start. The driver is "uvcvideo" which loads with no error messages.

if you do the command conky in terminal, it starts conky ofcourse, but it also shows output to that terminal so you can't do any other commands to that terminal, Is their an option like you can do with the '&' sign in other cases? If you do the '&' sign with conky it still gives output, also the conky -d command gives output...
View 9 Replies View Relatedi'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that Ubuntu will only boot into a terminal, asking for my username and password. Googling this problem seems to indicate that it may be a problem with graphics drivers.I've tried commands such as "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and "startx" which I found through googling the problem, but neither of these did any good. I also tried reinstalling Ubuntu, but the problem didn't go away.I can still boot into Windows so it's not the end of the world, but I'd like to get Ubuntu working.

In 11.4 "compiz --replace" displays no error messages, but starts up with no window decorations.
In ccsm window decorations, kde comparability, OpenGL and composting are all checked. Even tried as a different user after rm'ing the compiz-1 folder.
Composting using Kwin works fine.
Upon booting, how can I know which program starts first? Also, how can I force something to start after something else? For instance, how do I make sure that everything I deem as "not urgent" to load after the GUI and also how do I make sure things like firestarter start before fail2ban, etc?
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to Lucid, gnome-terminal and xterm both start in the root directory (/); I'd like for them to start in my home directory instead. I had added "cd /home/myname" to the end of .bashrc, and this worked well as a temporary fix, but was never necessary in Karmic. Furthermore, modifying .bashrc in this way renders Nautilus' "Open in Terminal" menu item useless, as it still opens the home directory instead of the folder Nautilus was viewing.

View 9 Replies View Related I'd like to run a program [URL] from the GUI menu (yes, I know I can run it from the command line). I've gotten this to work by using a menu entry (see attached screenshot). The command is:
Code:
gksu chkrootkit
with the option for Type: was selected as Application in Terminal However, when chkrootkit is finished, the terminal immediately snaps shut according to the profile selection: When Commands Exits: Close terminal What I'd like to do is create another profile that causes the terminal to be held open (see screenshot) when the command exits and be able to choose that profile from the GUI Menu entry. I believe the command when using the CLI is:
Code:
gnome-terminal --profile=<profile_name>
how do I incorporate this within the Command entry line of the launcher?

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
How does a C program start in linux? Is main() the first function called in the a c application by kernel. I understand it is the first called function written by the application programmer, but the question is to understand the what all kernel does and what all functions it calls before calling main()

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start however that would prompt for a password, and that would not be very well possible now would it? Now, if i try to start it up without being root, it will not start. So this is my problem, maybe someone out there would know a bit more about this than me.
