i have ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition but im running the desktop edition and i was recently trying to use compiz but it didnt work so i uninstalled it.. then after rebooting, no apps have window borders and my cursor changed to an x.. when i press alt i can move the windows..
I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and I have a question. I have compiz config settings manager and I did some changes there but I've noticed now that for example when a skype chat window is open and when I move my mouse pointer away, the window disappears. It's not exactly like disappearing cause when I hover over the window, it shows itself but it's pretty annoying ;/ I've changed so many settings but no result
Running firefox in a SELinux sandbox - periodically the mouse refuses to leave the sandbox (i.e., gets stuck in the browser, refusing to traverse across the window border onto the desktop). This usually happens once in a while, though periodically once every 15 mins or so - no particular pattern, no pattern in the websites visited either.
The setup is as follows:
- Fedora 15 with a bare metal X install (TWM, desktop locked down ala a kiosk install - I will try a different wm to see if that makes any difference at some point)
- VPN (having been through a few VPN providers not all are equal, and this is a pretty good one, running OpenVPN at the mo. - I will try L2TP when I get round to it)
- Firewall locked down to the max.
- As far as reasonably can be done, no direct access to the machine - the install at least in theory is untainted
Does anyone know of a SELinux forum? Can't see anything myself or at least in the first instance.
I'm assuming this is a MITM problem - largely 'cos I have crime sitting on my (Internet) ass. Same problem with SL6 also, so not Fedora specific. I shall put the security spin into a VM and develop my network engineer skills at some point!
Start xpdf or gv. Click an xterm to be active and slide it over xpdf/gv. Vertical lines from xpdf/gv under the xterm stick to the xterm window above and make it unreadable.
The problem does NOT show with KDE default settings with display effects on but does show in fvwm, xfce etc, and in KDE without effects.
On a system with a Sandy Bridge integrated graphics (i5-2400) the problem went away by downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.13.0. But it was not enough for another system with 945G which needed downgrading to xf86-video-intel-2.12.0.
I want to put some info on my all black background, for instance i do a lot of vpn connections, so it would be cool that i do startx and a xterm console was on the background (without the window ofcourse) with the tail -f /var/log/messages or my dropbox status and so on Like tilling....but on background...i hate wallpapers
[Code]....
now a problem to do the command line above and put it for instance in autostart.sh from openbox i need to do it as sudo and give the password......damn..it will not work
I'm running Opensuse 11.2 Kernel Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop GNOME 2.28.2
I have an instance of Nautilus File Browser that will not close or be killed, and it always opens to the same directory, kdenlive in my home directory.
Rebooting, logging out and in as someone else, then logging back in again as myself doesn't stop it. And, I'm afraid to uninstall Nautilus. I've tried Re-installing it to no avail.

What should I put in my .twmrc, so that an xterm window is brought to front (raised) when I click anywhere in the window. Currently, I have to click on the title bar to bring it to front. Presently, I don't have any .twmrc in my Home folder.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my HP Pavilion a320n computer with a ps2 mouse and the mouse pointer points with the bottom of the mouse and not the upper tip of the point. It does the same thing with Ubuntu 10.04.1. In Windows 7 and XP the mouse is normal. I don't know how I could adjust it or is this just a bug in the OS?
I'm running FC12 and GNOME.If I move the physical mouse about one inch, the mouse pointer moves across the entire screen. That's way too fast and way to sensitive.I prefer the mouse pointer to move far less distance on the screen when the physical mouse is moved.
From System->Preferences->Mouse, I set the various mouse Pointer Speed acceleration and Sensitivity to Slow, Fast, Low, High, and and I couldn't get it any better. At the least sensitive settings. if I move the physical mouse one inch, the mouse pointer moves across the entire screen. How can make the mouse pointer less sensitive to mouse movements?
i was referring to an article given in following website.[URL] I was surprise to know that i can kill all running processes by using kill 0. However when i tried running the command nothing happened.
my machine details:
Code:

have a problem with an Acer Aspire one running linpus linux. I get a black screen with a white mouse pointer at startup. I don't know how this happened. I can interrupt the startup process with ^c and then see the following amongst other text :Loading x11 FronEnd module...Failed to laod x11 FrontEnd moduleFailed to launch SCIM
Thunderbird has been running on my Fedora 13. After a recent yum update, it opens a tiny window in the upper left corner of my screen, which I can enlarge manually. There are no contents in the window. I cannot see anything.
I installed jabref via packages on lucid. When I start it via command line or applications menu it starts, but is initially a minimal size (not minimized) window at the top-left of the screen. If I resize or maximize it everything works properly. This doesn't happen with other programs.Any idea how I can get it to start in a normal usable size?I tried resizing, closing, and reopening it.I also tried having a database open or not.
I'm a linux newbie so go easy on me with technical terms.I've got a Acer Aspire One ZG5. Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I can move the mouse pointer around and such and the lights flash but stop suddenly.I can't use the bios recovery disk as I haven't got a USB big enough.
I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
I have a terminal that opens when the system starts and I was wondering if there is any way to keep it specifically, not other terminal windows, from appearing in the window switcher in compiz?
Using a xterm window to remotely log in and reboot a Redhat server causes the window to "hang" once the remote server reboots and I cannot close the window using Ctrl-D.
i have many mouse pointers in the .ico also .ani and .cur format from my old windows days SEE image attached would also like to make new ones and really want to turn them into a format which works on ubuntu since the choice of pointers is only 6 i found a way to install X11 cursors from gnome-look.org download then save to .icons in the hidden part (control H) of my home folder then go system/preference/appearance/customize/pointers
but even then you have to install a whole lot of files to change one pointer and i see no way of making/installing my own is there a more straightforward way? ubuntu/linux are about freedom and here i am at the moment very restricted
I'm trying to make my mouse invisible permanently ,i tried to make a custom mouse cursor with lot of tutorials ,but it did not worked for me ,i tried to delete completely but i can not find how , to disable completely Mouse Cursor on X11 that would be great (not using unclutter)
i want to change the size of mouse pointer i use right click on the desktop then change desktop background then choose Themes --> customize then i draw from small to large and the pointer get large only in windows like firefox but when i get the pointer on desktop.
I used UBUNTU 9.10 with no problem on 3 of my computers. I tried to use UBUNTU 11.04 and with one of my old laptops I face a problem with the mouse pointer. I can not see the mouse pointer. The mouse seems to work, but since I can not see the mouse pointer, its impossible to upgrade to UBUNTU 11.04 the same problem with UBUNTU 10,04 but no problem with UBUNTU 9.10.(My laptop is Fujitsu Siemens Amilo)
I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 and when i log into the system my mouse pointer/cursor disappears and I have to leave the system idle for 5 minutes after that the system gets locked and when I unlock the system I get the mouse pointer/cursor back. How to resolve this I want to see the mouse pointer/cursor when I login to the system. Can anyone help me to fix this.
I'm running 12, not 11. I don't know why I had 11 in my head. Can this be moved BACK from EOL? If not, I'll start a new thread. Sorry. My wife and I have matching HP EliteBook 8730w "mobile workstations" (laptops that need a donkey to move them). We also have matching LG second screens. Unfortunately, we have matching mouse pointer issues too, as you might expect.
99% of the time we work away without issue. 1% of the time, Fedora suddenly stops showing the mouse pointer in the separate LG screen. The pointer is there, you can use it (if you can guess where the hell it is!) but you can't see it. Only a reboot seems to solve the problem.
It's worth noting xorg.conf is not being used. It's an nVidia card in these laptops and I tried the latest drivers from them - they totally wiped out the display, I mean total FAIL, unusable. Had to boot up in without GNOME, run level 3, to fix it. After much messing around, I think I used the FirstAidKit plugin for xserver to repair things. Since then there is no xorg.conf:
[Code]....
If I restore *any* xorg.conf file it all goes wrong again, so I'm guessing there are either some defaults at play or there's another system currently managing my display. Either way, restoring/editing xorg.conf won't help me with the current set-up.
