I'm trying to run the "Login Window" application in Ubuntu to allow me to setup automatic login. When I select it all I get is a message in the task bar stating an application is starting then that disappears but the app does not start.I've also tried starting it from the command line using gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup but this has the same result and does not yield any more clues to the problemMy next thought was to reinstall gdm but I'm not sure about that.
I downloaded the "BlueSwirl" login screen theme from [URL]..After extracting the tar ball I read the install and readme files files. The readme was useless but the install file said to use 'gdmsetup' to install. so I pulled up a terminal window and ran 'gdmsetup' and this is what came out.

While installing Lubuntu 10.04, I opted for Auto login, but now I want to go for it. How can I restore that option, so that I get the login window on start up.
Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.
when i login to openSUSE a window named login keyring appears and it asks me root password. it happens everytime when i login. how to fix this problem?
When lauching gdmsetup I can't unlock it to change settings. nothing happens when clicking on "lock" button

It started when I have changed the type of ubuntu login - I have changed from gdmsetup settings from "password" to automatic authorization.
I checked the the PolicyKit Agent. It seems to working (and autostarting) with such command: /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
I am trying to change my login screen, but under System/Administration, I only see Login Screen, not Login Window. Login Screen only lets me set the default user, not the login theme. Is there a hidden way to access Login Window that I'm missing?
Ive just installed the nvidia 190.32 beta driver on my fedora box and now the GUI will not load. When I type startx it will say the kernel and nvidia driver have different versions..my questions is how do I uninstall the nvidia from the virtual terminal at system boot and revert to the default one?
i created an ubuntu 10.10 live system on an usb stick last weekend using the build in startup disk creator. The System itself is working quite fine, but since I don't want to install ubuntu to the computer I'm using the stick with, I want to get rid of the start window (TRY OUT or INSTALL). How can I achieve this?
I am using fc.11 and loving it. i want to change login window but like fc.10, it is also without a separate tool to do this. i searched and found something very similar here:[url]i.e. appearance>background>select image>make default>root password but it changes my background only, login window is that old one.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and was working excellently until yesterday when I uninstalled a few programs.From that time I am getting this error " Graphic card driver not configured/installed Start Ubuntu in low graphic mode?" When I say YES to start Ubuntu in Low Graphic Mode the system takes infinite time and never proceeds to login menu. But from Command line I can access web using w3m command.
My laptop did a "shutdown" (not reboot) automatically over night when I was downloading few things. When I tried to boot it up, it boots up & it never displays the window which asks for password. I have tired to reboot it several times since then it still stays at the same place. Since it is not displaying username & password window & I am not able to login through gdm. Interesting thing is the normal sound which comes when the login window is display is heard but the window is not seen. However when I press ctrl+alt+f5 I am able to login there which is only text based login.
I tried several things to get out of issue like 1) In the console run ps -eaf | grep -i gdm I see that the login process is running but is not displaying the window.
2) sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ( it didnt ask me anything about the driver or anything like that & just returned with out any error message ) $? of the above command was 0. ==> reboot after this & still the login window would not come.
3) After login at the console ( ctrl_alt+f5 ) sudo service gdm stop ==> no error prints sudo service sdm start ==> no error prints ==> no login window
I just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?
Today I download a gdm login window theme package, but I don't know how to install it. Results by google searching shows it is very easy on ubuntu by entering System-> Administration -> login window. But I don't find that way on fedora now. The theme package I download is named GDM-BrasillinuxEye.tar.gz . I download it from official web [URL] .
New to this so please excuse me if asking stupid question. Is it possible to login as root from the login window that appears at boot. At the moment only get my user name but as i am going to be installing a number of thinks would like to do it using root. So can i make root appear as an option at boot up. Have tried other then putting in root and password but does not work
I have a problem with my Fedora 14, only on Fedora 15. Been out of my home for a week, when I arrived home and turned the PC on first thing I made was the update, as usual. But when I reboot or shutdown the PC and when I go to do login, the Fedora get's stuck and doesn't show me the login window to insert my login. Made a clean install and it worked fine, until I made the last updates and it became again, stuck before the login window appears. Is there any update making this? What could be? It must be some update, because when I made the clean install it worked fine, and with the first update also worked fine.
After installing a pair of updates and restarting my Login window is gone. CTRL + ALT + F1 brings up the terminal and I can login there, but CTRL + ALT + F7 only shows the default green background with the cursor. No login window. STARTX is running / XMD, GDM, KDM do nothing
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a second OS on my XP machine (on a second partition). It worked fine for about a month, but this time when I booted up in Ubuntu, it showed the Ubuntu loading screen, then the desktop background picture and mouse, but it did not load the login window. I have no idea how to fix this, because most problems are about the entire X server not working, whereas my screen works.
I tried pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, stopping gdm, then running startx, which mostly worked, except the date and time status bar addons had an error loading and the task bar did not have any workspace icons on it. I would like to login the normal way to get back to my good old Ubuntu desktop, but the window does not want to load. I have restarted the computer multiple times, with the same result.
Everything looks fine until when the login screen should show up but doesn't. The cursor is there and can move. I can switch to terminal by ctl-alt-F*, and login. After gdm stop and startx, gnome is back but only in fail safe mode, with non-movable non-resizable window, only one workspace, and cursor is a black cross.
I ever met a similar case before, which comes to the login screen but it keeps reloading after entering password. Finally got solved by run sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop in terminal. This time it doesn't work anymore.
