Oct 12, 2009I've been running CentOS on my laptop for a few weeks now. I don't know what happened today, but when I boot up, the NetworkManager wont show up on the panel, and I don't have access to wireless networks or Internet. I tried booting my Windows partition and the wireless works fine. I can't seem to remember any latest change I've made aside from the wallpaper =) Any ideas where I should start debugging? I could see the module "iwl3945" still loaded. Here's a manual type of my lsmod | grep iwl3945

Software :: When Start Xemacs Is Doesnot Run In An X Window But Runs In A Terminal Window
Feb 7, 2010Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

CentOS 5 :: Can't Get Cluster To Work (aisexec Daemon Didn't Start)

Tried with the "basic" hosts file as well, eg with only the localhost lines in it. Both server run centos 5.3, up-to-date.There is no real error anywhere which might explain WHY aisexec daemon won't start. When i start openais manually (/etc/init.d/openais start) it starts without any errors.

Sep 2, 2010I'm configuring a new Centos 5.5 server in replacement of an old W2K server.The topology of our network is simple : one file/dhcp/dns relay server and workstations (PC's and some MAC's) plus network printers and scanners.All the workstations have dynamic IP addresses (easier because a lot of 'dynamic' changes : new persons with their own laptop, ...) and the server and printers/scanners have fixed IP addresses.I edited the dhcpd.conf (see here underneath), I have the file dhcpd.leases but it doesn't start !

Sep 11, 2009Ive just installed the nvidia 190.32 beta driver on my fedora box and now the GUI will not load. When I type startx it will say the kernel and nvidia driver have different versions..my questions is how do I uninstall the nvidia from the virtual terminal at system boot and revert to the default one?

Ubuntu :: Window Manager Doesn't Start?
May 2, 2010I just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?

When I select it all I get is a message in the task bar stating an application is starting then that disappears but the app does not start.I've also tried starting it from the command line using gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup but this has the same result and does not yield any more clues to the problemMy next thought was to reinstall gdm but I'm not sure about that.

If I choose anything other than 'failsafe' (KDE failsafe, KDE, TWM, IceWM, etc), it accepts my password and then just sits there
If I login via failsafe, then type 'startkde', KDE starts up fine and I get all my windows, virtual desktops, etc.

1. Leave Gnome installed, but prevent it from launching when typing startx
2. Have both X11 and my prefered default window manager (blackbox) startup when I type startx (or similar)
My ultimate goal is to leave Gnome installed but "dormant" and when I do a remote ssh -X be able to use X11 forwarding with blackbox.

Dec 27, 2010I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..
Why its not coming in my PC..

May 11, 2010I've been Googling all day and cannot find the answer. I find all the "GUI" ways to do it through Gnome and KDE but I'm not using either...I have an EEE PC set to boot up automatically to openbox and want Firefox to start after that in a full screen openbox window.I've tried adding the firefox command to ~/.initrc but it won't execute. I tried the command in .profile. This brings up firefox on a black screen without openbox.Firefox comes up fine when executed from the openbox menu.

CentOS 5 Server :: VsFTP Iptables Wont Start Get Error - CentOS 5.5
May 11, 2011i am currently trying to install vsFTP onto my new linux server and btw i just started using linux today this is my first time using linux so i got the ftp installed good it got downloaded and everything then i went to open a port for my server for vsFTP i used this comand to open it "-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT" then i closed it by pressing ESC then :wq! and it brought me back to my comand line again so now when i try to start the ip table thing with the comand "service iptables start" then when i execute that comand putty respondes with this "Applying iptables firewall rules: iptables-restore: line 1 failed [FAILED]"

Jul 13, 2011I really a newbie to xfce. I was using gnome 2 orignally then since I'm using Arch Linux (64-bit), it was updated to Gnome 3. After long weeks of daily use, I didn't like gnome 3. Now, I decided to use xfce. I did a fresh install (after formatting my hdd) of Arch, I put installed XFCE + SLIM login manager. Almost all works fine until I decided to install Compiz. After installing Compiz, for some reason gtk-window-decorator --replace (the one that you put under CCSM > Window Decoration > Command) does not work. Only "emerald --replace" and "kde4-window-decorator --replace" works. Unfortunately, I don't like emerald. When I run gtk-window-decorator --replace in the terminal it gives me this error:

gtk-window-decorator: error while loading shared libraries: libmetacity-private.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I made sure I installed the complete compiz+gtk package from pacman. BTW, I never had a problem with gnome 2 + compiz + gtk-window-decorator. I don't know if I have to do something extra in xfce to make gtk-window-decorator work.
EDIT: FYI, I use fusion-icon as an autostart application for me to automatically start compiz during startup.

Aug 19, 2010i have ubuntu 10.04 installed and i haven't touched anything apparently relevant in its configuration. many times, when an application opens a new window and this should receive focus, it doesn't. for example, i'm in mozilla thunderbird and i click on "write" to write a new message, and i keep waiting, "why does it take so much to open???" - until i realised that the new message window was immediately opened but it didn't get focus, it is just blinking (in a barely pereivable way) in the panel on the bottom and i have to click on it to give it focus. it is not just thunderbird - just about any program, but not always. sometimes the same happens when switching some flash player web application to fullscreen mode (such as videos or megavideo): the full screen does not appear, i have to click on the icon on the panel on the bottom.
sometimes, even more weired behaviour are observed. for example, let's suppose i have windows a, b and c open and none of them is minimized. i'll call "icon" a window's button on the bottom panel. i click alternatively on icons of windows a, b, c, a, b, c and so on. expected: every time i click on a window's icon, the window should get focus and be brought to the front. observed: when i get to window a, it toggles its state from open to minimized and viceversa, that is, when i switch from c to a, it does as if i was already on a, so instead of bringing it to front, it minimizes it; then next time i come back to a, it gets restored.

General :: Terminal Window Has To Be Open For Browser To Work
Jun 15, 2011I just love Linux! I am using Fedora 14 and just starting out. I am curious as to why is that when I click the Firefox icon to launch the internet from the menu bar a Linux terminal window has to be open. If I close that particular terminal, (which by the way says "Terminal" and does not show my chosen host name) Firefox closes. If I go to Applications, then Internet, then Firefox to launch the browser, the terminal doesn't open.
