View 2 RepliesI loaded CentOS from a USB net install as I am trying to get an eeeBox to run CentOS 5.3 as a low power usage firewall. As you might know this box doesn't have an optical drive so everything has to be loaded from something USB. After the net install I ran a yum update and then went to some websites that I use and Firefox would pop a small window which looked like a vertical blue bar with a white dot at the bottom. I could grab it with the mouse and expand it and it would open as a normal window but inside there would be nothing. Usually in other CentOS installations Firefox would put the new window in another tab. When I go to the Edit/Preferences area and click on the tab icon nothing appears on the page...only the mail and security icons work. I unloaded Firefox using yum remove and reloaded it using yum install and now when I start Firefox it pops three windows and every site I go to pops another window with nothing in it. Am I losing my mind, or is there something wrong with my hardware, or is this a bug?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got Ubuntu a few days ago and recently updated it. I now have a screen popping up whenever I start Ubuntu that says I have less than a gig of space left on my hard drive. I dont want windows xp on my computer anymore but have no idea how to get rid of it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy window content is really grey and boxy. But the title bars and what not are fine. When I change my theme it doesn't fix it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got a new computer recently, and just now installed 10.10. Everything was going great.... until when I enabled the Nvidia drivers and set my dual monitors. While things still work fine, it appears I have no theme set (Aside from the Window Border).
When I check in System->Preferences->Appearance it always shows the theme properly for this one window, while all other windows, and gnome panels etc appear to have no theme set (just use simple flat colours, low graphic mode etc).
Changing the theme (via the Appearance window) does not work, nor does a simple reboot.
When I start Ubuntu, file explorer windows look like they should.
Then, after about 15 seconds, the windows manager automatically switches to a greyer, bulkier design
How can I stop this behaviour?
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 as a guest OS in Virtual Box 4.0.12
I want to prevent users changing the wallpaper, as i couldn't found any direct method I thought of preventing the /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties being running,
I know that the user also can set the wallpaper without running that . But didn't found any other way .
I tried to use SELinux to it and I'm stuck at writing a own policy.
According to SELinux, it prevents everything ., but as i have mapped the user to a SElinux user ,even though he can use administrative tasks , he can run the appearance window. that means he has got the permission from a different policy , Currently I'm stuck at this place.
Suitable way to prevent the wallpaper being changed by the normal users.
Newly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.
My env show:
Code:
The Xemacs install on Debian ( Bug written ) Install and configuration of Xemacs from source. A better understanding of the Debian upgrade process.
i created an ubuntu 10.10 live system on an usb stick last weekend using the build in startup disk creator. The System itself is working quite fine, but since I don't want to install ubuntu to the computer I'm using the stick with, I want to get rid of the start window (TRY OUT or INSTALL). How can I achieve this?

I just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm starting to use SuperUbuntu, and am trying to set up Evolution email prog. This is on a USB stick. Anyone know how to get rid of the keyring nonsense that keeps popping up? Google searches reveal that others are highly annoyed too, but can't cure it easily. Is it easy to put Thunderbird on and remove Evolution? And before anyone starts to preach security to me - I don't want to hear it. No offence meant. All I'm looking for is a correction.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is an annoying problem I've been having with Unity. I'll be moving the mouse around and sometimes hit the right or left mouse clicker and the launcher bar pops out and stays stuck out. I can't get it to auto hide unless the browser is closed. Then I have to reopen the browser and start all over again. What makes this very annoying is there may be several tabs open in the browser that have to be all reloaded again.How do you get the launcher bar to auto hide again after it is stuck popped out?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince I installed Natty recently, I had this "popping" sound from the speakers when the laptop was running on battery. Turns out this popping has to do with a power-saving feature for "hda-intel" sound-chips.
Open terminal and do:
Code:
gksudo gedit /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/intel-audio-powersave
Find this line:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
And comment it out by putting a "#" in front of it like this:
# INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
Just below this line you make a new line, like this:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false
So now you will have:
# INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false
Save the file (File > Save) and exit.
Reboot the computer.
The popping sound will be gone.
If you for some reason need to undo the setting, just open the file again and remove the "#" from:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=${INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE:-true}
And delete this line:
INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false
Save the file.
Reboot.
I recently installed the newest version of Songbird, it worked for two days. Now when I click Songbird, it tells me it's starting down in the Window List, but it never pops up. I've tried all three methods from here to install it afterwards... none of them I got to work. Anyone have a clue what could possibly going on? This is on Ubuntu 9.10(32bit)
View 6 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..
Why its not coming in my PC..
my computer configuration :
Windows XP, SP 2
256 MB RAM, 1.81 Ghz
AMD 64 Athlon Processor 1800+
I want to shift my OS to Ubuntu completely.
I'm trying to run the "Login Window" application in Ubuntu to allow me to setup automatic login. When I select it all I get is a message in the task bar stating an application is starting then that disappears but the app does not start.I've also tried starting it from the command line using gksu /usr/sbin/gdmsetup but this has the same result and does not yield any more clues to the problemMy next thought was to reinstall gdm but I'm not sure about that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install to 10.04. Not too many issues except any sound I play sounds like it's underwater and pops while playing. I have tried to do the Pulse Audio install, but every time I loaded pauvcontrol (I think was the title), it would pop up "Connection Failure: Connection Refused." I tried to follow other guides, but they'd all fail because I'd be missing half of the files it changed. I have a Creative Labs X-Fi Fatality card that has given me troubles in the past, but usually, it works. I tried to install Creative's open driver, but again, I had an error when I attempted to Make the directory.

I seem to be having a problem with Banshee. When I boot up, it automatically starts up, which seems innocent enough. However, I opened up Exaile (because Banshee had this problem of not recognizing spaces in some of my songs' filenames, replacing them with '%20'), and closed Banshee from its notifications icon. It closed, but about 3-5 seconds later its window pops up again. I used Ctrl+Q to quit, but it still came back after a few seconds. I've tried opening up a terminal and typing "killall banshee-1", but still, Banshee keeps coming back. Even though I restart and not open Exaile, Banshee still keeps coming back when I try to kill it.
