Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver
Feb 8, 2011Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

I did an "apt-get install alsa" to see if I could even get ALSA, and it downloaded and installed. I still can't seem to get ALSA working down there.

May 20, 2010I have a Logitech clearchat pro usb headset and it works really well. However every time I plug it in I have to turn up its volume in alsa mixer. Also so that the right volume slider is controlled (by the volume keys) I have to change the output in pavucontrol. Does anyone know of a way that I can make this happen on its own? I guessed writing a udev rule might work (not that I have ever done one), but I don't know the commands that are equivalent to what I do.

Feb 9, 2011I've got an Acer 7736 and had quite a few issues with no sound after my install of 10.10. After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.
As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.
Ubuntu :: Gnome ALSA Mixer - Sound Doesn't Work
Mar 20, 2011I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.
Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).

How can I get ALSA Mixer to remember my volume settings from last boot or if there's no other option, a way I can make it adjust the levels to a predetermined level automatically on startup. Gnome volume control shows that HDA Intel(Alsa mixer) is selected and as a default the speaker is muted, if I unmute it, an infinite loop-like sound plays and no application seems to have access to the sound, I believe the correct module is installed by default, and the webcam does not work as well. I'm using debian squeeze i386.

Ubuntu :: Volume Control Wanted, Not Mixer?
Jun 4, 2010I just installed Xubuntu on a new computer.One problem i came across, was the volume control at the top panel (near the clock).Unlike Ubuntu's volume control, it just opens up a sound mixer instead of being able to adjust the volume right away with one left-click. Is there anyway to get that to happen? Even my keyboard's volume control doesn't work in Xubuntu, but it worked perfectly fine in Ubuntu.
If i try to add a new applet into the panel, there is ONLY the MIxer, which is not what i want. There are no options to add regular volume controls anywhere that i can just left-click and adjust right away.

Aug 10, 2010have recently upgraded Slackware/Salix 13.0 to 13.1 and it all went smooth except for one problem with the mixer which apparently cannot be found. Only OSS card is seen in Xfce mixer, and OSS works, but no alsa card.I have a Via82xx onboard chip and a SB Audigy 1 [SB0092], Emu10K1. Via was set up with an alias as the first to load. All this worked perfectly in 13.0. Now aplay gives the following message:Quote:

I just switched to debian from ubuntu in search of something different and I want to find a system that works for me before I settle down.
I DO NOT HAVE A SECONDARY OS
just two problems I have with debian:
No sound
Error message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
When I try to open sound from the speaker icon at top right.
I think it's a driver issue but Its not as easy as ubuntu was lspci:
My trackpad also does not work so I have to open documents manually if I don't bring my mouse to class.

Oct 5, 2010I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.
whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

Apr 7, 2010My internal mic on sony vaio was not working on karmic 64bit. After I followed these instructions [URL] (updated alsa to 1.0.22) I got the microphone working, but now mplayer does not play any sound (although it plays files), as it tries to use pulse by default. However when run with -ao alsa, it works fine.
Other than that, the volume control has not effect on the sound, so every time I need to control it using alsamix.
When I remove pulseaudio, everything seems to be working, except gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-applet do not start, and the keyboard volume controls dont work.

Jan 17, 2010I had to remove Pulse Audio to get my sound working in X-Plane. After installing ALSA, sounds perfect, no complaints. One side effect is that now my Logitech keyboard volume controls don't work, and I no longer have that nifty tray icon. Can I fix this, and install a tray icon for ALSA? Also my Sound link says, "waiting for sound to respond" when clicking System>Preferences>Sound, can I fix/remove this?
