ALSA mixer resets my speaker volume to zero and changes my USB headset volume to a very low level. How can I get ALSA Mixer to remember my volume settings from last boot or if there's no other option, a way I can make it adjust the levels to a predetermined level automatically on startup. I'm using 10.10 with pulseaudio.
View 3 RepliesEvery time I boot into my laptop, there is no sound. Going to alsamixer in a terminal shows that the "Speaker" volume is constantly getting reset to 0, and bringing it back up fixes the problem. How can I get Alsa to remember to keep the speaker volume above 0?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Logitech clearchat pro usb headset and it works really well. However every time I plug it in I have to turn up its volume in alsa mixer. Also so that the right volume slider is controlled (by the volume keys) I have to change the output in pavucontrol. Does anyone know of a way that I can make this happen on its own? I guessed writing a udev rule might work (not that I have ever done one), but I don't know the commands that are equivalent to what I do.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 5.1-speaker set, confed succesfully with alsa. alsamixer -c 0 -command shows volume of all the speakers I want to set up. My problem is, when I have alsamixer open and change main volume from gnome-panel (it's called pavucontrol for me, pulseaudio?) it "resets" all speakers to max (100%). Only master volume changes like planned. For example, if I have front speakers set to 50%, center to 75%, surround to 100%, subwoofer to 40%, when changing volume from gnome's panel it only changes master volume, and puts every other speaker to max. How to prevent this? Do you have any clue? I had not any problems with this in openSUSE 11.1. Alt+F2 not working with Emerald decorator Screens go black after 10 minutes or so in openSUSE 11.2
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got an Acer 7736 and had quite a few issues with no sound after my install of 10.10. After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.
As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.
I am using UNR 9.04 with Alsa 1.0.22.1 For some reason everytime I reboot my volume levels reset to headphone & speaker muted and headphone/speaker/PCM levels all set to 0%.
Does anyone know if there something I can that will allow my levels to be the same after I reboot? or if there is a script out there that will set my levels on startup?
If there isn't a script what would I do to create my own? also what would I do to have it auto run at startup?

I made the obvious mistake of leaving my volume level set to nearly maximum. Of course, Ubuntu's default behavior is to restore the mixer to its last known state - a point of much irritation at that moment. This had been a problem in the past as well, and today was the last straw. So, I did some research, for quite some time I might add, and decided to be a good community member and share my findings. It seems that there are all sorts of opinions around the web. The dominant opinion is that a mixer should always be restored to its last known state, that this is all well and good, and why would you ever want it to work any other way. Lots of people suggested that the startup sound be disabled, which was not a terrible solution, but was still a work-around as it means that the next sound bite to be played is the alarming one.
Needless to say, I wanted to find out what I would call the "proper" way to set the mixer level at startup. As my laptop uses PulseAudio, and my office desktop uses ALSA audio, the methods were different. My focus was for PulseAudio as that was the original purpose. I note here that my method for ALSA is less detailed as it is not the default for Ubuntu audio these days. So, if you are using ALSA, you might have to be a little creative to make my ALSA note fit your needs. I have attached 2 files to this post, one for ALSA and one for PulseAudio.

The problem is some of the songs are louder than others, in other words set the volume and next thing a song comes along that scrambles your brains it's so loud, Or you get one you can't hardly hear.
I've used a couple of GUI's in the past, but all of them seem to do one song at a time. Not really an option with over 10,000 songs.
What would be nice is if I could pick one song as a base line and using terminal run a batch of say 500 songs through it.

Im using Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha1. I plugged in a set of headphones, and it cut out my speakers. I know how to fix this in Alsa Mixer, but the command for it obviously isnt the same as Karmic.
I type Alsa Mixer, it says Usage: /sbin/alsa {unload|reload|force-unload|force-reload|suspend|resume}
Anyone know a way to open A.M. that it will.
I notice that each time I boot my computer, under the playback section of the ALSA Mixer the 'Speaker' volume control is turned all the way down. Even when I return it to the proper level, and then restart my computer later, the slider for 'Speaker' seems to default back to the previous state mentioned above. Is there a way to set the default for the ALSA mixer in a .conf file of some sort so that the default setting for 'Speaker' is always at max?
View 4 Replies View Relatedi have this weird problem with my pavucontrol. for some reason my input levels go up and down by themselves when i'm talking on skype...mostly up...and it's annoying because i'll be talking normally, but to the people i talk to on skype it sounds like i'm yelling, and i have to have pavucontrol open always to constantly keep the levels under control..i've made a short desktop recording showing what i mean.i didn't include sound, but as you can see, i'm not turning the levels up manually..i just talk and they go up by themselves
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed ubuntu so I'm quite lost on some stuff. This little annoyance comes from the volume levels in Ubuntu 10.04. I have partitioned my computer to have dual boot into windows and ubuntu, so I know the problems are not related to the hardware itself as everything works just fine in windows. I am using a Dell Inspiron 9400, for reference.
The multimedia keys on the computer respond correctly but on the lower three volume settings sound completely drops out as if I had muted the computer. I went into the Alsa mixer to see if I could configure these sound levels and sure enough the master volume was down to zero, PCM and LFE are also low . I changed the settings of the lower levels but when I press on the volume up or down media keys to switch level the settings get reset. I tried just changing one level, exiting and saving through alsactl but it didn't stick. Even after reboot the settings are back to the zero volume on the first levels.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.
First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.
I am currently troubled with a very annoying problem - the volume level of the PC is jumping higher and lower at random intervals. It makes listening to music very difficult, as at times the music can go from just right to overly loud, just to fall right down so that it is hard to hear. I've only noticed this problem in the past few weeks, and I can definitely say it wasn't an issue in 9.10. This is a fresh install btw, not an upgrade.

I am running F12 and I use Amarok to manage/play my music library.
I keep having a problem where the mixer 'Surround' in my alsa volume gets maxed whenever I switch tracks in Amarok. I want to stop this from happening because it causes my speakers to buzz just loudly enough to drive me crazy.
I have an SB Live! 5.1 (emu10k1) card.
I'm running Banshee 1.6.0 under OpenSUSE 11.2. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and whenever Banshee ends one show and switches to another, it resets the sound volume from the value it was set at during the previous podcast.
I couldn't locate anything in the Sound preferences, and Banshee doesn't seem to have anything specific about making the playback sound sync with the system volume.
I'm using Mate on Jessie. The problem is that mate-volume-control kinda sucks as an audio control. It doesn't have nearly enough options for a proper volume control program. Pulse is much better for my needs. It or Alsa. Is it possible to remove mate-volume-control, or at least make Pulse the default volume control?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy internal mic on sony vaio was not working on karmic 64bit. After I followed these instructions [URL] (updated alsa to 1.0.22) I got the microphone working, but now mplayer does not play any sound (although it plays files), as it tries to use pulse by default. However when run with -ao alsa, it works fine.
Other than that, the volume control has not effect on the sound, so every time I need to control it using alsamix.
When I remove pulseaudio, everything seems to be working, except gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-applet do not start, and the keyboard volume controls dont work.

I had to remove Pulse Audio to get my sound working in X-Plane. After installing ALSA, sounds perfect, no complaints. One side effect is that now my Logitech keyboard volume controls don't work, and I no longer have that nifty tray icon. Can I fix this, and install a tray icon for ALSA? Also my Sound link says, "waiting for sound to respond" when clicking System>Preferences>Sound, can I fix/remove this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy audio was working just fine up until today, when I was working on some audio production stuff. I did QjackCtl, and also ran pulse-jack so I could use another app not in jack. Now, upon a boot up, there is no gnome-volume-control-applet or gnome-volume-control running. When I run gnome-volume-control it says there is no sound device (without Jack running). When I do it with Jack and Pulseaudio running (doing QjackCtl and pulse-jack), gnome-volume-control shows info about jack, but no hardware. I have sound, I just can't affect it volume-wise, etc. When I run pacmd I get this:
$ pacmd
Daemon not responding.
When I close QjackCtl I then get an error in a window that says merely: Waiting for sound system to respond.
I just did a reinstall of Debian testing last night, and today I am configuring the system to my liking. I just clicked on the mixer in the tray, and the only option I get is Realtek ALC269. Before I could use ALSA. What happened, and how can I get ALSA back?
I did an "apt-get install alsa" to see if I could even get ALSA, and it downloaded and installed. I still can't seem to get ALSA working down there.
I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.
Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).
I'm having a problem all the sudden with amixer. set Master 5% used to control the pulse audio master volume. Suddenly, it will only raise and lower the headphone volume. Pulseaudio works, but I no longer have a master volume at all.

I googled my issue, and didn't come up with much to help me. Any advice on this? It's not a completely pressing issue, but I would like to know what is going on and how I can fix this, since I never messed with MPD before in my life.
The gnome also mixer keeps reverting to external amplifier checked. To get sound every day I have to open that and uncheck external amplifier. Is there a way to make that permanent? I have never used an ext amplifier and this started with Lucid install, Also under the edit menu and sound card properties it has ext amp checked and if I uncheck it , it won't save and goes right back to checked

Gnome volume control shows that HDA Intel(Alsa mixer) is selected and as a default the speaker is muted, if I unmute it, an infinite loop-like sound plays and no application seems to have access to the sound, I believe the correct module is installed by default, and the webcam does not work as well. I'm using debian squeeze i386.
