I just did a reinstall of Debian testing last night, and today I am configuring the system to my liking. I just clicked on the mixer in the tray, and the only option I get is Realtek ALC269. Before I could use ALSA. What happened, and how can I get ALSA back?
I did an "apt-get install alsa" to see if I could even get ALSA, and it downloaded and installed. I still can't seem to get ALSA working down there.
I just bought an HP Pavilion dv7-1273cl and it works excellent except for the sound and the webcam, the result for lspci is as follows:

Gnome volume control shows that HDA Intel(Alsa mixer) is selected and as a default the speaker is muted, if I unmute it, an infinite loop-like sound plays and no application seems to have access to the sound, I believe the correct module is installed by default, and the webcam does not work as well. I'm using debian squeeze i386.
After compileing my kernel i get no sound. I tried : alsaconf - choose my sound card - everything is all right, but when i try alsamixer i get : No mixer elems found

I googled my issue, and didn't come up with much to help me. Any advice on this? It's not a completely pressing issue, but I would like to know what is going on and how I can fix this, since I never messed with MPD before in my life.
I have a Logitech clearchat pro usb headset and it works really well. However every time I plug it in I have to turn up its volume in alsa mixer. Also so that the right volume slider is controlled (by the volume keys) I have to change the output in pavucontrol. Does anyone know of a way that I can make this happen on its own? I guessed writing a udev rule might work (not that I have ever done one), but I don't know the commands that are equivalent to what I do.

After quite a bit of fiddling I managed to get that sorted and I now how have sound. I believe I'm using alsa although pulse also does seem to be on here. The reason I say I believe I'm using alsa is that after startup, I have no sound on speakers unless I unmute it in alsamixer.
As I understand it alsa's supposed to save your settings on logout/shutdown/reboot but this doesn't appear to be the case, and I'm not able to find any asound.conf or the like in the places they're apparently supposed to be.
I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.
Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).
The gnome also mixer keeps reverting to external amplifier checked. To get sound every day I have to open that and uncheck external amplifier. Is there a way to make that permanent? I have never used an ext amplifier and this started with Lucid install, Also under the edit menu and sound card properties it has ext amp checked and if I uncheck it , it won't save and goes right back to checked

ALSA mixer resets my speaker volume to zero and changes my USB headset volume to a very low level. How can I get ALSA Mixer to remember my volume settings from last boot or if there's no other option, a way I can make it adjust the levels to a predetermined level automatically on startup. I'm using 10.10 with pulseaudio.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI notice that each time I boot my computer, under the playback section of the ALSA Mixer the 'Speaker' volume control is turned all the way down. Even when I return it to the proper level, and then restart my computer later, the slider for 'Speaker' seems to default back to the previous state mentioned above. Is there a way to set the default for the ALSA mixer in a .conf file of some sort so that the default setting for 'Speaker' is always at max?

Every time reboot or log in i have to readjust my settings in the mixer. volume is at 0 and i have to adjust the tone control and its settings every time to get it back.

I'm using Mate on Jessie. The problem is that mate-volume-control kinda sucks as an audio control. It doesn't have nearly enough options for a proper volume control program. Pulse is much better for my needs. It or Alsa. Is it possible to remove mate-volume-control, or at least make Pulse the default volume control?

..... does not work, likely because flash uses alsa-oss which is probably not configured automatically. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both alsa-oss and flash, but it didn't solve the problem.
Just got a pretty fresh install of Debian/XFCE. Both monitors work out of the box on my 8400GS. I was unable to find an option to change it so I can span is as 1 work space instead of having them mirrored.

Regarding ALSA and PulseAudio - Explanation on how these two interact. After installing Debian I realised that my sound control (Volume Control: HDA Intel ALSA mixer) was different from what I had with Ubuntu where it would display a window called "Sound properties" in which allowed me to control the sound of each program running - I believe this is the PulseAudio aspect. (If I'm wrong at this point please correct me)
Now I have managed to get PulseAudio setup correctly for me (not as easily as Ubuntu but I moved to Debian to learn, not be spoon fed), however the way in which I did it may of been wrong - pretty much just went to synaptic and installed everything with PulseAudio in its name
Currently the sound icon in my top Gnome panel (within the notification area applet) has the ALSA mixer, sometimes when I log on it has the PulseAudio one (Sound preferences window), I don't really mind which one is loaded thanks to the PulseAudio Volume Control program (under Sound & Video). Is there a way though to stick with just one?
I am using Debian testing. If I install the gnome-desktop-environment then the sound driver defaults to HDA but since I just installed gnome-core (for a more stripped-down version of gnome) the default is the OSS driver. How do I get ALSA to default to the sound driver HDA?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble getting ALSA working on my system. I had been using OSS for awhile but decided to move to ALSA after a kernel upgrade. ALSA worked fine except for the tedious chore of having to run alsaconf everytime I booted up. I was getting errors message for OSS during boot up telling me OSS modules weren't loading properly and linux-headers needed to be installed to get it to work properly again. I ended up installing the linux-headers later due to some nvidia driver fiddling. My system has now reverted back to OSS and I can't seem to get ALSA to work at all. I have libasound2, alsa-base, alsa-utils and alsa-oss installed and alsaconf says no ALSA modules are loaded. I've been searching around and haven't found how to get rid of OSS to install ALSA properly.

Debian 8.3 has no sound. Removing/reinstall pulseaudio/alsa-base had no dice.
There was no "alsa force-reload" command on this Debian system.

Should(How can) I compile/upgrade alsa to the latest version?
I was upgrading manually my ALSA to the latest version -1.0.23-, so after reboot I got several errors related to ALSA telling me that NO SOUND CARDS Found. so the system is freezed when tries to connect to the network but after that, the system is stopped, nothing else happens, I tried to Ctrl+C and reboot as "single user mode" and still nothing, when I rebooted I can see a message that says: "busy trying to mount /" .So my questions are:
1. is there a way to log into the system?
2. is there a way to deactivate this driver on startup?
3. when I can login, how can I remove the failed alsa driver?
if this helps, I have another linux distro running in the same HDD, so maybe I can do something for debian for that distro
