Slackware :: Microphone Control Vanished From Mixer

Aug 6, 2010

Slackware 12.1 on Acer Aspire 5710 laptop.Intel HDA audio. There used to be a mixer control for microphone (or 'Mic'). A few months ago it vanished. The microphone works, but is at a fixed level and always with annoying playback through the speakers. I cannot change the recording level as there is no mixer control.

Slackware :: USB Headset - Volume Control On Them Stopped Working - Sound Works - Microphone Doesn't

Oct 29, 2010

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".

I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.

Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.

Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.

When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.

Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

Software :: Microphone Input Is Vanished

Aug 1, 2010

The internal microphone never worked, but external worked fine through the input jack with all programs, including Skype. Then, I noticed that the mixer no longer had a microphone control (including in alsamixer). No recording program would work any more, BUT - Skype still worked! OK, so the only program that needs sound input that I use is Skype, so I just left it that way. But now I downloaded a newer version of Skype, and ran it, and my microphone was dead. So I went back to the old version, which used to work fine, and the mic is dead in that too. To make sure it wasn't a setting, I moved the whole .Skype directory out of the way. Still no sound at all from the mic. when I did the Skype test call.

The hardware must be OK, as I am a heavy Skype user and had no problems. Simply running the newer version killed it instantly, and i cannot get it working again. I don't understand why the microphone input control is no longer available. No mixer program can see it. It used to be there, but then there it was, gone!

Ubuntu :: Pulseaudio And Mixer - Change The Microphone/speaker/ring Devices In Skype?

Due to the fact that with pulseaudio it is impossible to change the microphone/speaker/ring devices in skype, I had to remove pulseaudio.

After that I can choose a device in skype, but the mixer does not work anymore. There is a way to have a working mixer without pulseaudio package or a way to choose audio devices in skype with pulseaudio installed?!

Ubuntu :: Volume Control Wanted, Not Mixer?

Jun 4, 2010

I just installed Xubuntu on a new computer. One problem i came across, was the volume control at the top panel (near the clock).Unlike Ubuntu's volume control, it just opens up a sound mixer instead of being able to adjust the volume right away with one left-click. Is there anyway to get that to happen? Even my keyboard's volume control doesn't work in Xubuntu, but it worked perfectly fine in Ubuntu.

If i try to add a new applet into the panel, there is ONLY the MIxer, which is not what i want. There are no options to add regular volume controls anywhere that i can just left-click and adjust right away.

*Specs:
Dell Dimension 5280
Intel P4 2.53ghz
256mb RAM
60gb HDD
Xubuntu 10.4 (or the latest)
Generic Keyboard w/volume control

Jun 20, 2015

I'm using Mate on Jessie. The problem is that mate-volume-control kinda sucks as an audio control. It doesn't have nearly enough options for a proper volume control program. Pulse is much better for my needs. It or Alsa. Is it possible to remove mate-volume-control, or at least make Pulse the default volume control?

Slackware :: USB Ports Vanished From 12.1

Jul 20, 2010

I'm using slackware 12.1 for some time now and this morning (kind of the first day of my winter break) I decided to fix an old USB pen drive to save some docs... (bad idea #1). I had some trouble deleting some files. Slack kept telling me that the files weren't there, so (probably not the smartest decision ever) I decided to "format" the tiny thing. (bad idea #2). Cfdisk wouldn't do it and I ended up on fdisk. (bad idea #3). I thought I was formatting 4 partitions in the same pen drive which now I think might have been my four usb ports. After that, no USB Ports are working at my computer at all. I even boot slackware 13.1 from a dvd and still couldn't get any USB working. Rc.hotplug is nowhere to be found.

At the end of dmesg, I get:
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
usb 1-7: device not accepting address 4, error -32 .....
usb 1-3: device not accepting address 21, error -32
I didn't mess with this kernel and everything was just great 4 hours ago.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Get Tvtime To Work Because /dev/mixer Is No Longer Created In 10.10 So No Volume Control From Within Tvtime

Oct 5, 2010

I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.

whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

Hardware :: Microphone Control - Doesn't Work

Jan 14, 2010

I've been having problems in getting my microphone input to work. Frustratingly, it works sometimes and doesn't work at other times, and I have yet to discover what causes the difference. I've been testing it with the Skype Sound Test Service.

My laptop, like most others, has a built-in microphone as well as a microphone jack (which I'm using). In kmix, there are sliders for:

What do all of these do, and how do they relate to the two microphone sources? Can I use them to select input from one source while silencing the other? Where can I read about this?

I'm running Kubuntu Koala, so I asked this question over in the Kubuntu forum, but no one there has responded. That was probably not the best place to try (for this issue, at least).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Head Set Microphone - Where's The Auto Gain Control

May 2, 2011

The mic works, and the sound is crystal clear (after enabling mic boost in alsamixer, and lowering the input volume down closer to "unamplified" in Sound Preferences), but when I use word's like "let's" or "lisa" (basically anything higher pitched), I get horrible distortion.

Lowering the input gain further seems to work, but then all the "normal" words sound too weak.

I read a description of what Automatic Gain Control generally does, and it seems like something that was designed specifically to solve this problem, but I can't find an option to enable something like that in Ubuntu.

... I'm assuming the option exists, or that there is maybe some other trick to normalizing the mic volume (other than post-processing with audacity)?

Slackware :: Thinkpad T500 Fan Control - Way To Control ?

Jun 2, 2010

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.

My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?

The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.

So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

Debian Hardware :: Microphone Noise - Small Red "x" On Volume Control Recording

Apr 5, 2011

when I try to make a recording in my laptop (integrated mic), I am able to hear myself (when I reproduce it afterwards) but with a lot of noise. I read a solution of going to alsamixer and disabling "L-R" in capture, but when I do that,I am not able to hear anything. Another thing (I don't know if that has to do with it) is that when I go to volume control->recording, every time I see a small red "x" in every mic (microphone, capture, internal mic) and if I enable them, close and reopen volume control the same "x"s appear.

Slackware :: Using Mumble 1.2.2 - No Sound And Microphone Not Working

Mar 28, 2011

I used Mumble 1.2.2 for a while on my Slackware 13.1 system without any problems. After some time (before 1.2.3 was released) it suddenly stopped working. A few days ago, I wiped my disk and re-installed Slackware 13.1. Compiling 1.2.3 worked. Running it just stopped with a "FUTEX"-Error. I searched the source code for futex (with "-i" parameter) and didn't found anything. There were matches in the compiled object files. So, it's probably something with Qt.

Then I compiled Mumble 1.2.2 and run it. Worked. But it didn't find my microphone. I can hear everybody else but I cannot talk. I tried every device but there is no sound. If I activate the microphone in alsaconfig I can hear myself, so the microphone seems to work. A few minutes ago, I compiled Mumble 1.2.3. You know what? It runs without any "FUTEX_WAIT" error. But, the microphone does not work.

Slackware :: Automatic Microphone Enable On Plug-in?

(Sound still plays though, it seems that volume is at 100% while the bar in the middle reads 0%).

Slackware :: Chassis Fan At Max - No Speed Control?

I got a new computer and got it running Slackware64-current. It's motherboard is an ASUS M4A88TD-M and it's processor is an AMD Phenom II x4 965. I'd like Slackware to control it's speed according to temperatures from lm-sensors. Output of # sensors-detect can be found here. Kernel is stock -current 2.6.33.4. Output of # lspci is here.

Slackware :: Mp3blaster Volume Control ?

May 3, 2011

I am using Slackware 13.0 quite out of the box, normally I can change volume for every app using alsamixer. As my laptop is a little bit old working in X uses a lot of resources I have been searching for more and more console based apps. With good results until now.

I started using mp3blaster to listen to music. Great app and all. Only problem I have got is that I have difficulty controlling the volume for it. When in alsamixer I can mute the master channel an control Pcm in small increments so that I can speak about control. When using mp3blaster I have got no control whatsoever. Cant mute the vol channel nor can I control the Pcm2 channel in any way.

My questions are: How do I control the volume in mp3blaster? Why do I have Pcm2 instead of Pcm in mp3blaster? What other info would be needed for anyone to push me in the right direction to solve this problem?

I just finished installing Slackware64 13.37 on my Sony Vaio PCG-7153L, and I'm having issues controlling the LCD brightness of the laptop. It still has the stock Slack kernel 2.6.37.6 SMP The brightness controls worked on Fedora 12-14, as well as the Ubuntu 10.04 live disc. I checked /proc/acpi/, but there's nothing in there to control brightness. I reloaded the sony_laptop kernel module, and from dmesg I get:

Code:

sony-laptop: brightness ignored, must be controlled by ACPI video driver From the Ubuntu bug [URL] and the Red Hat bug [URL] it looks like they've already dealt with this problem. However, as I said earlier, my laptop worked fine with Fedora 12-14.I know Slackware does minimal fiddling with the kernel, so I'm thinking this might be an upstream kernel bug...
