Server :: Mounting Drive Bad Superblock Error Wrong Fs Type, Bad Option, Bad Superblock On /dev/sda1?

Jun 16, 2010

I have a x64 OpenSUSE server with two hard drivers installed. The first one is used for the / and /home partitions and the other is for backups. Ironically enough it is the backup hard drive I am having trouble with. I was having trouble writting to the drive and unmounted it to preform a fchsk, however now when ever I try to mount it I get the following error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Does anyone know who I can repair the drive and retrive data?

Fedora Hardware :: Hard Drives Keep Crashing - Mount: Wrong Fs Type, Bad Option, Bad Superblock

Aug 26, 2010

I am writing as yesterday, my fourth hard drive within 2 years crashed. Is that normal? One was crashing 2 years ago, one in winter 2009 and 2 just within 2 weeks. What can be the reason for so many crashes? I heard maybe the power supply? How can I find out if that's broken? The voltages at least in BIOS seem normal. The SATA controller? How do I know if its broken? Can I just but one PCI-E card with SATA adapters? Is it the motherboard? Theres not much more in my computer... As well, its wired that my good-old 160 GB drive never crashed, only constantly the bigger ones. Here some typical error code from mount and dmesg:

Ubuntu Installation :: Bad Superblock - Wrong FS Type

Jan 4, 2010

I cannot for the life of me get my HD working again. I tried following all the various remedies I could find but to no avail.

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sda1
e2fsck 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
e2fsck: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda1
Could this be a zero-length partition?

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dumpe2fs -f /dev/sda1 | grep -i superblock
dumpe2fs 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
dumpe2fs: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda1
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

It goes on and one like this. I'm stuck using the LiveCD for now (Jaunty) so I have some limitations.

OpenSUSE Install :: Error Message Was 'bad Magic Number, Corrupt Superblock' With A Suggested Command To Try Another Superblock?

After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. Slackware :: CD Rom Not Mounting - Can't Read Superblock / Fix It?

May 10, 2010

I am newer to Slackware but not to Linux. I am having the hardest time trying to get my CDROM to mount for me so that I can play audio cd;s and the like. I can see that the system knows that my CDROM drive is there and that it works because I installed Slackware 13 from my CDROM drive as /dev/hdc. Now when I put in a cd nothing happens? I have googled away and searched this forum quite a bit before posting this but I have tried almost everything I can think of and what others have mentioned. I have screenshots to show you what I mean. When I try to run the command:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
I get it as mounting as read only and it says can't read superblock? Now that is fro my slave IDE CDROM on top as hdd. I have tried before to mount it as /dev/hdc but to no avail. I know both CD drives work just fine because I used them to install the system. I am going to put the screenshots below so maybe someone can help me! Also I can eject the top CD drive with the command code...

Ubuntu :: Cannot Mount, Bad Fs, Option Or Superblock FSCK?

Aug 23, 2011

The HDD is a 500GB internal SATA, The smart claims that the "file system is not clean" but is still green.FSCK ran a few errors and using fsck i copied a new superblock from a backup location, It still won't let me mount and FSCK is still trying to fix a TON of errors. I'm sorry I don't know any of this yet, but I'm concerned that FSCK could be destroying the data on the drive, for example photos and other important things. FSCK is coming with a lot of things to fix, It's gone from trying to fix errors in free blocks of group #1 to over #3000.. Is this safe? Will this work? Can I get rid of whatever caused this problem in the first place?

Debian :: USB Drive Corrupted - Cannot Read Superblock

Mar 16, 2011

I have a removable USB pen drive, that all of a sudden, when it got 99% used, stopped working. When I try to mount it (manually) I get "can't read superblock". I know there is a ton about this on Google and I've read a lot of them, but most seem to be about formatting a drive, or fiddling in fstab. I'm trying to run fsck on it, and it finds errors, (among them: two FAT-tables?) but then it just freezes, and CPU goes to 100 % and I let it be like that for 4 minutes, before aborting. Scandisk in windows is rubbish (fails to start), and running "chkdsk /f F:", in windows, results in nothing, the shell crashes immediately. Is it normal for fsck to get stuck and just chew up CPU? It does not seem to be reading from the drive, according to conky. Also, is it possible to run fsck as normal user, (at my work)?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Dd Drive And Retain UUID And Mdadm Superblock

May 18, 2011

I have an mdadm linear array of 4 500GB drives. One of them had a few bad sectors, so I've dd'ed it to a new one (conv=noerror), and tried to start my array. Mdadm refuses, saying, "mdadm: /dev/md4 assembled from 3 drives - not enough to start the array."I had diffed different samples from different positions on the source and the mirror drive and confirmed they were identical. Checking the superblocks confirms three old drives still having their superblocks as expected, while the newly mirrored one has,

daniel@lnxsrv:~$ sudo mdadm --misc --examine /dev/sdf1
mdadm: No md superblock detected on /dev/sdf1.
- and,
daniel@lnxsrv:~$ sudo blkid /dev/sdf1

[code]....

As before. The mirror apparently has no uuid, but the original does. To confirm my sanity, I did,

daniel@lnxsrv:~$ sudo dd bs=1M count=50 if=/dev/sdc of=./sdc && sudo dd bs=1M count=50 if=/dev/sdd of=./sdd && sudo diff -s sdc sdd
50+0 records in

[code]...

How can the uuid not be the same when bit-for-bit from the very first byte of the drive, covering MFT etc., these two drives are identical according to diff?

Ubuntu Installation :: Superblock Error In Gparted - Can't Run Dumbe2fs - E2fsck

Mar 8, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed (installed xubuntu on top and that is what I run but should not be an issue) on a laptop and it runs fine but I am giving it to my daughter so I wanted to install windows as well, and dual boot, so she could play a couple of games that she has. When I booted with gparted cd it shows the information icon beside my partition (have 2 one swap sda1 and one for ubuntu sda2) and everything I attempt to do tells me the superblock and all backups are bad. I am not sure how this can be since the system boots and runs fine.

In gparted I can't run dumbe2fs or e2fsck without getting the error but when I do dumpe2fs in the system it seems fine. I am pretty sure I used ext2 or ext3 as a filesytem as it is an older laptop so ext2 is what I usually run with. Maybe I just let ubuntu install whatever it wanted this time, I can't remember for sure which I chose during this install. have been backing up all the data to move it off anyway so reinstalling won't be a big issue. I had checked out how to reinstall grub2 after doing the windows install so thought I was all prepared but apparently I was not that prepared.

General :: SD Card Mount - Error "wrong Fs Type, Bad Option"

Apr 12, 2010

I am trying to make a copy of the SD card that my TS-7800 SBC boots from. When I plug the SD into my opensuse pc I get this error. Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb4, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so There are four partitions on this card and I can only access one of them.

dmesg | tail gives me this

[894.422497] EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended

when I do e2fsck -p /dev/sdb4 I get

e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb4 /dev/sdb4: The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 file system. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> I was hoping I could just plug in both cards and do this dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc to copy everything and have a back up SD card.

Ubuntu Servers :: Bad Superblock /dev/md0 Softraid 10.04?

Mar 24, 2011

This might take a little while to explain so please bear with me. I just bought a HP N36L microserver to replace my Netgear ReadyNAS as it has 4 bays as opposed to the 2 in the Netgear, the HP came with a 250GB Seagate drive in so I installed Ubuntu 10.04 server onto that as a minimal install in a 5GB partition, selected basic server, lamp and samba during the setup and then once installed added the minimal gui, all good so far.

The idea was to have 3 1TB drives in the HP running software Raid 5 and after trying to do this via the disk utility gui and having misaligned cylinders I found this guide for setting up the Raid 5 array - http://www.jamierf.co.uk/2009/11/04/...n-ubuntu-9-10/ Now the problem with setting up the raid was I had just over 900GB of data on the 2 disks in the Netgear and not enough space anywhere to back it all up so the plan was to install 1 x 1TB drive and format to ext4 and transfer all the data onto it from the Netgear, then pull the 2 drives from the Netgear and build the Raid 5 array using just those 2, then copy the data from the 3rd drive onto the raid and then add the 3rd drive and grow the array.

This actually was all going fine, 2 disk array was built, data transferred and all was good so added the 3rd drive to the array and issued the grow command, after many hours this completed and I had a 2.0TB filesystem icon on the desktop.

Now the problem, the last two steps were to unmount the array and run an fsck on it (as per the guide) and then grow the filesystem but the array wouldn't unmount it kept saying it was busy, I tried to force it but still nothing so I decided to reboot (my windows background coming back to haunt me perhaps) when the box came back up it failed to mount the array due to a bad superblock

Debian :: Can't Read Superblock - Resolve This?

Apr 11, 2010

When plugin the drive (via USB) two volumes show up, but there's another that I can't seem to open (and may have all of the shared files I need). It's the largest volume (over 900 MB).

I keep reading to run xfs_repair, but when I type that in the terminal, I am given "command not found". I am not sure how to use it.

Also when I try to open the volume I am given "can't open superblock" error.

I am not too familiar with using Linux and ma just trying to get to my files.
