i used to have ubuntu 9.i decided to move to sabayon so i used the live cd to install it ,resize the ubuntu partition and use the remaining space for sabayon.while the resizing procedure i got an error(i dont have a copy of the error log file but i know it has something to do with an anaconda process).i aborted the installation and the result was an filesystem that couldnt be mounted.when i try to mount the hdd i get this:

I have a x64 OpenSUSE server with two hard drivers installed. The first one is used for the / and /home partitions and the other is for backups. Ironically enough it is the backup hard drive I am having trouble with. I was having trouble writting to the drive and unmounted it to preform a fchsk, however now when ever I try to mount it I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Does anyone know who I can repair the drive and retrive data?

Ubuntu 10.04 has just failed to load from my hard drive, so I've resorted to booting from CD just to get the machine going.I'm wondering if my main boot drive has gone caput??When trying to mount it using DISK UTILITY...get the message: Error mounting volume

I have installed both Windows Xp and Fedora 12. Last time when i was working on Fedora it didn't shut down properly. Now following error occurs and finally the system sleeps.

I have been trying to mount an NFS share from my REHL server for over an hour, and Google was not able to help me. when I use the command:
mount -t nfs server3:/programs /programs
I get the folowing error :

I am writing as yesterday, my fourth hard drive within 2 years crashed. Is that normal? One was crashing 2 years ago, one in winter 2009 and 2 just within 2 weeks. What can be the reason for so many crashes? I heard maybe the power supply? How can I find out if that's broken? The voltages at least in BIOS seem normal. The SATA controller? How do I know if its broken? Can I just but one PCI-E card with SATA adapters? Is it the motherboard? Theres not much more in my computer... As well, its wired that my good-old 160 GB drive never crashed, only constantly the bigger ones. Here some typical error code from mount and dmesg:

I cannot for the life of me get my HD working again. I tried following all the various remedies I could find but to no avail.

I am trying to make a copy of the SD card that my TS-7800 SBC boots from. When I plug the SD into my opensuse pc I get this error. This was a really frustrating problem which turned out to have a really simple solution, so I'll share it with people who might be having the same struggle. Problem You plug in a usb hard disk and try and mount it using:

I spent hours - days - hunting around for the solution! (And felt a bit humiliated when I realised how simple it was!) PS, There used to be a "Success story" section on LQ, but I couldn't find it; if this is better in another section, please move it. PPS, I'm on a public computer and won't have Linux access for a looong time - if anyone can copy the message that fdisk prints out to help people who are searching for it

i have got an Debian Lenny NAS with 7x1,5TB of a Softwareraid5. Kernel Version is 2.6.32. The Raid ist mountet in /media/raid5. The System ist on a seperate disk and work fine. After i tested the performance of the raid with:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/md0 bs=1G count=1 oflag=direct
Since i had done this i cant find any Data on /media/raid5. cat /proc/mdstat and mdadm --detail /dev/md0 looks fine. All UUID's are good. But: The SuperBlock is unreadable and the partition table was not found. mke2fs -n /dev/md0 shows some Backup of the Superblock , but i cant repair it with fsck.ext4: Illegal inode number on /dev/md0.

What I believe has happened is that I've corrupted the partition table. Essentially one of my partitions' ending point exceeds the maximum number of cylinders/sectors on my drive.
Essentially I have the same problem as on the thread @ [url] but do not know how to fix this and am afraid to reformat/partition based on sectors without really knowing what I'm doing here.

Using ubuntu minimal install 9.10 for a htpc. My boot drive is a 2Gb disk on module. When using advanced install I am eventually given the option to format the drive and ultimately the option to pick what sort of partition table type. I am not sure what to pick; it appears to have msdos as a default. Here are my options:
aix
amiga
bsd
dvh
gpt
mac
msdos (default?)
pc98
sun
loop
Some appear to be obviously bad choices; but I am not sure. Any ideas on which would be a better pick for me? I have already used msdos and it seems to work fine.

I'm trying to define the partition table type (I want to set it to msdos) for an automatic installation using preseeding file. (Why? I want to setup a software RAID 1 with two 2TB disks, by default the installer uses gpt partition tabless on those disks, where it's tricky to install grub(2), as there is no mbr, and the root partition is on a md device) During manual installtion it is possible to set the partition table type (by setting debconf priority to low).

I have a removable USB pen drive, that all of a sudden, when it got 99% used, stopped working. When I try to mount it (manually) I get "can't read superblock". I know there is a ton about this on Google and I've read a lot of them, but most seem to be about formatting a drive, or fiddling in fstab. I'm trying to run fsck on it, and it finds errors, (among them: two FAT-tables?) but then it just freezes, and CPU goes to 100 % and I let it be like that for 4 minutes, before aborting. Scandisk in windows is rubbish (fails to start), and running "chkdsk /f F:", in windows, results in nothing, the shell crashes immediately. Is it normal for fsck to get stuck and just chew up CPU? It does not seem to be reading from the drive, according to conky. Also, is it possible to run fsck as normal user, (at my work)?

After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?

A colleague had troubles with a DVD that contains valuable data, no further backup available. The DVD won't run and I am trying to fix it. Have been playing around on Mac, Windows and Linux successively.
On Mac
Mac shows this message in Toast Titanium 10:
but Finder keeps telling it is an empty disc, no way to get to the files.
On Windows
Windows 7 in VMWare is not of any help.
On Linux
Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 (in VMWare) and did some checks using info on this forum. When trying to mount the disc, this is the error message. Then I used fdisk on the volume (/dev/sr0) and tried fsck. I downloaded UDFTools but cannot find any repair option like udffsck as described in this thread by the last author.
I am running out of inspiration... there are clearly data on the disc, which can be seen by just looking at its surface, but also the info on Mac. However, there might be some bad sector size in the partition table which renders it unreadable. How to recover these data?

I was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
i have 2 window partition(1 for windows and 1 for data).i do,nt want to format 2,nd partition.
How can I installed windows?My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

i decided to try archlinux in my pc a while ago so i installed it... after three months i started to miss slackware so i decided to reinstall it but i wanted to save my /home partition so when i installed slackware i left my /home partition from arch hoping that i could just mount it on slackware...but now when i try to mount that /home partition this is what i get:

I am newer to Slackware but not to Linux. I am having the hardest time trying to get my CDROM to mount for me so that I can play audio cd;s and the like. I can see that the system knows that my CDROM drive is there and that it works because I installed Slackware 13 from my CDROM drive as /dev/hdc. Now when I put in a cd nothing happens? I have googled away and searched this forum quite a bit before posting this but I have tried almost everything I can think of and what others have mentioned. I have screenshots to show you what I mean. When I try to run the command:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
I get it as mounting as read only and it says can't read superblock? Now that is fro my slave IDE CDROM on top as hdd. I have tried before to mount it as /dev/hdc but to no avail. I know both CD drives work just fine because I used them to install the system. I am going to put the screenshots below so maybe someone can help me! Also I can eject the top CD drive with the command code...

I installed Ubuntu as shown in the wiki and when I went to restart it gave me a lovely blinking cursor and nothing else. So I held down option, loaded into osx, reinstalled rEFIt and got my menu on startup. Unfortunately, the partition sync tool doesn't seam to be working, it gives me an error: Status: MBR partition table is invalid, partitions overlap. Error: Not Found returned from gptsync.efi
