Ubuntu :: Any Way To Repair WXP Boot Using FSCK?

Feb 25, 2011

I need to boot in WXP just because the guys at the company don't want to update for Linux drivers in the TS so I can't connect from home unless I do it in Windows XP. But today WXP refuses to boot, when the progress bar appears, the system boots automatically. The WXP CD doesn't help, the repair console doesn't let me run chkdsk or anything (dir C: gives an error about listing addresses or something like that). Is there any way to use fsck or anything in Linux to repair the WXP NTFS partition?

Ubuntu :: Fsck Usr Fails And Unable To Repair?

Dec 2, 2010

I am travelling so would really appreciate a few tips that should hopefully get my pc running again. (I have internet access via a kiosk, and can burn a disk if necessary, but the smaller the download the better)I have a few ideas that with some help I should be able to fix the partition.1. Is there a simple way to use use grub, to mount all partitions read only and not to fsck them so I can logon in normal user and sudo and hopefully fix the parition?or 2. Download a small version of ubuntu or something that I can burn to CD (my machine cannot boot from usb) so that I can repair the machine.3. Download the ubuntu installer (alternative) and try and reinstall the necesary usr partition?

Hardware :: Corrupted Drive- Mechanical Or Logical - Fsck Repair?

Sep 7, 2010

I was working on my RHEL 5.2 workstation yesterday when the OS became flakey. first I noticed that some software that I had running was outputting and error that it was unable to write to log file because permission was denied - I've never seen this output before- it would have been writing to my home dir running under my user name. From an open terminal, i did "ls -al" and saw that many of the permissions the files in my home dir were listed as "????????" some were still "rwxrwxrwx", as well, many files were highlighted in the colors set for links and root privileges.

I tried to start a new terminal, and it failed. then Gnome crashed. When I reset the Machine, I got through grub, and into the startup, and after finding the Volumes, the startup failed with a Kernel panic:

giving several errors- like:

I dont have much experiencie with this stuff, but it looks obvious that somethig like the MBR or wherever the partion information is stored might have been corrupted.

What I dont understand is why I can get into GRUB (its a dual boot Windows Vista, RHEL machine). I'm guessing that this means its not a mechanical problem, because I can get RHEL to begin to boot which i think is failing somewhere around the /etc/rc.d/re.sysinit script, and also can get Vista to bring up the inital windows screen and a mouse pointer on spanning both of my screens which i think means that it must have at least loaded my ati drivers for my dual head radeon 4850. windows hangs there however.

I've tried the RHEL 5.2 rescue disc, and it doesn't recognize any Linux partitions.

I ran the system diagnostics out of the dell bios and it came back with a failed HDD : Error code 0142, but from digging around a bit I've found that this is a very broad diagnosis.

My concern over it being a mechanical problem is that I'm not sure that I want to try to run any further diagnostics, or any of the disk utility programs that i've seen listed here on linuxquestions, as it might damage it further, and there is some data that i would really like to get off this disk.

Installation :: During A Reboot File System Crashed And Fsck Couldn't Repair

Nov 12, 2010

16GB RAI've been running the Debian-based Proxmox VE on it for six months or so with no problems.Today I loaded Centos 5.5 x64. During a reboot, the file system crashed and fsck couldn't repair.I loaded it again, did all the updates, and loaded my applications. On about the third reboot, it crashed again and fsck couldn't fix it.I don't really know where to begin. I doubt seriously that any hardware has went bad since yesterday.

General :: Ubuntu Won't Boot And Boot Repair Fails?

May 8, 2011

I downloaded ubuntu 10.10 iso, made CD, installed as dual-boot with win Vista home premium and used it for a week to access the 'net and email. Yesterday, while deleting an email, the "d" key stuck down while I was issuing <CTRL>D and the cursor froze. I then rebooted by using the reset button and saw many lines of text including "kernel panic". so I reset and booted into 'repair boot'. Again, many lines of text which stop at the same place if I try this twice.

I assume I've fried my ubuntu install and would like to fix or re-install it. When I installed it, I let the [wubi?] installer make decisions except choice of drive because it picked the external, USB drive. It appears to've used about 80 G on internal drive D: I could boot from the distro CD and see if it will re-install but I'm concerned that I may not fix my problem or that it may mess up my windows installation.

Fedora Installation :: Repair To The Grub Boot Loader To Boot Into Win 7 ?

Oct 23, 2009

I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?

Ubuntu :: Run Fsck On Keypress During Boot?

Jan 4, 2011

I am wondering if there is a way to manually trigger a file system check during boot by pressing/holding a key. Maybe there is already a keyboard shortcut built in to do this?I know that using tune2fs you can modify the number of boots (mounts) between file system checks, or even use "shutdown -rF" to reboot the system and force a file system checkAlso, I do not want to force the user to choose to run/skip the file system check during boot. For example, prompting the user with, "Do you want to run a file system check [y/n]?" each boot (or even each time the system thinks it should run a file system check),s not desirable

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Cancel Fsck At Boot

Mar 22, 2010

Right now I am trying to fix the problems on my server with daemons not starting.

So I have to try different solutions and reboot.

The problem is that after 28 reboots, fsck kicks in and decides to check 2 TB of data.

Is there a way to cancel this???

It takes forever, and by the time it will be done, I will have forgotten what I was testing.

The issue of daemons not starting becomes even more frustrating when fsck decides that I must take a half an hour break.

So again, how do I cancel the fsck on Ubuntu Server?

Ubuntu :: Prevent HDD Repair On Boot?

Aug 25, 2010

I installed Ubuntu to use ddrescue to clone my dying drive and keep the log.Now the question is:Does Ubuntu really try to repair a corrupt NTFS disk during boot?If so, how can I change this behaviour, including any disks attached to the system in future?I had a similar question for the live cd, I think it should be easier now, as we can configure the system.Btw am I the only one to think an 'auto repair' by default is no good without asking for permission? It's something I dislike on Windows. A corrupt structure is likely a hardware problem, and in this case a repair can terribly damage the file system.

General :: Boot Up Misbehavior After An Update During Fsck

Jun 25, 2011

Today I did an update on my Debian 6.0.0 installation, which included a kernel update. I also did an Nvidia driver update, afterward. All well, until upon a third boot up an fsck check was forced (34 mounts). Some odd behavior ensued. At about 19% it exited the check, printed what appeared to be a load of inode numbers with error messages, and "froze" with the caps lock and num lock lights on the keyboard flashing.I did a couple of grub recovery modes, each which advanced a little further, and all is well again. However, it concerned me. Where in var/log do I find the file of that particular fsck activity?

Ubuntu :: Automatic File System Repair On Boot?

I'm using Ubuntu Lucid and any sudden power loss will usually cause problems with the file system. When I bring the computer back up, Ubuntu will then scan for errors at boot-time and if any errors are found it prompts me to select whether to repair or ignore them. I would much rather have it select the repair option automatically so that I don't have to be physically present. The reason for this is that i have a web server that should come back online automatically after a power loss.

Fedora :: Can't Give Root Password For Boot Fsck

Nov 6, 2010

UPDATE: This is a bug: [URL] Evidently the problem is with plymouth because a workaround is to add "rd_NO_PLYMOUTH" to the kernel boot options. I don't get a prompt for my disk encyrption pass phrase---just a flashing cursor---but that's a small price to pay for being able to run fsck when the root filesystem wasn't umounted properly.

I have fully updated f13 (as of today) on a laptop with all ext2 file systems (It has nothing but flash memory.) If it's shut down without unmounting all file systems, it drops to a shell and asks for the root password to run fsck when it's rebooted. Every key press is treated as though it were <enter>, with a response to the effect that the password is incorrect.
