Ubuntu :: General Error Mounting Filesystems - Error "No Such File Or Directory Fsck From Util-linux-ng 2.16"

Apr 1, 2010

My ubuntu stops when mounting system hdd. The screen display the following messages :

mountall:/etc/fstab: No such file or directory fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 WARNING: couldn't open /etc/fstab: No such file or directory init: mountall main process (545) terminated with status 1 General error mounting filesystems. A maintenance shell will now be started. CONTROL-D will terminate this shell and re-try. udevd[560]: can not read '/etc/udev/rules.d/z80_user.rules. Ubuntu: clean, 474879/24231936 files/28016581/96898047 blocks root@i7:~# exit_

I suspect the disk manager pysdm that i had just installed today and it had crash during the previous session. The /etc/fstab file does not exist anymore and i cant rename the fstab.bak because the disk is read-only even for my root user

Ubuntu :: Get The 'General Error Mounting Filesystems?

Aug 29, 2010

When I try to start up 9.10 I can get past GRUB but not fsck. A file check will be started but no progress will be made and finally I get the 'General error mounting filesystems'.Trying in recovery mode I get this just before the fsck check

Quote:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
[8.016378] ACPI: I/O resource piix4_smbs [0xb00-0xb07] conflicts with ACPI region SOR 1 [0x0b00-0xb0f]
/dev/sda1 goes fine
Quote:
/dev/sda3 has been mounted 34 times without being checked, check forced
mountall: canceled

[Code]...

This seems to be slightly different than the other threads I've seen discussing this issue. It just all of a sudden happened, I didn't upgrade anything or have any crashes immediately prior.

Ubuntu Installation :: General Error Mounting Filesystems After Interrupted Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10

Oct 13, 2010

Originally posted in Launchpad yesterday [Question #129083]:

Quote: System froze in mid-upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and now fails to boot, giving a 'general error mounting filesystems' message when loading [in either normal or recovery mode.] However, the boot menu remains accessible with the F8 key and is functional.

While in the 10.10 Live CD, using the chroot method in the grub2 help proved unsuccessful and returned this pastebinned result. The system is 10.04 64-bit running an nvidia card and sporadically froze with increasing frequency. No resolution to the freezing could be found online, which seemed associated with any of nvidia, usb, flash or even firefox. Can someone suggest an alternative to restore to bootable condition and resume upgrade without having to reinstall and wipe the drive? I also followed the copy alternative to the chroot method in the grub2 help and still get the same core dump for chroot and device not found error for upgrade-grub as posted in pastebin. I'm still running off of the 64-bit 10.10 Live CD.

Skimming other "general error mounting filesystems" topics in this section, I realise I may have to bite the bullet and cut my losses, since those other users seemed to settle for a reinstall. Any final advice out there I can try out?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 "general Error Mounting Filesystems"

Jan 18, 2011

I'm getting this error on boot of Mint 9 64bit. It gets to the grub boot screen (dual boot - Mint 9 32 & 64 bit) and I can boot into the 32 bit version, but the 64 bit results in that error. If I go into the maintenance shell & try fdisk -l, I get: fdisk: error while loading shared libraries: libuuid.so.1: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory

Ubuntu :: Error - Mounting /dev On /root/dev Failed: No Such File Or Directory

Apr 4, 2010

I have recently experienced a problem that occurred after an automatic update. After the update it said restart system. So I did and proceeded as normal. when after the reboot Firefox suddenly stopped working, crashed and upon clicking it again only a blank box appeared. Then my other apps followed and i soon couldn't do anything so i shut down my computer. Upon restart I got a black screen with tons of text and something around the lines of

mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting / sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory

[code]....

So I rebooted and pressed shift to open that grub thing and booted from an earlier kernel. This time it said checking HD for errors and after booted normally. Everything seemed fine but next day it did it again. Starting with Firefox crashing and then everything else. I again booted from a previous kernel and it worked but upon checking with uname -a it did not list the kernel i chose to boot from. So I decided to upgrade 10.04 to 10.10. This upgraded my kernel and deleted the old ones so i am hoping i am good now.

Ubuntu :: Initramfs Boot Error - Mount: Mounting /dev /root/sys Failed: No Such File Or Directory

Feb 19, 2011

Okay, so on occasion when I boot into ubuntu I get this error

[mount: mounting /dev /root/dev failed: no such file or directory]
[mount: mounting /dev /root/sys failed: no such file or directory]
[mount: mounting /dev /root/proc failed: no such file or directory]

[code]...

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

CentOS 5 :: Error Mounting Device UUID=cee298a0-9c47-4a3a-ac84-23db4d20edd5 As /. No Such File Or Directory

Dec 22, 2009

CentOS 5.3 has been running fairly good except for a slow ethernet connection so I thought I would upgrade to CentOS 5.4 to see if that improved things. I had previously changed fstab and menu.lst to use UUID instead of LABEL in order to insulate myself from partition label changes I wanted to make. This worked fine in CentOS 5.3. When I attempted to upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 using the installation disk and telling it to upgrade rather than do a new install, the installation correctly found my root partition as /dev/sdb8. When I proceeded with the upgrade I received the error:

"Error mounting device UUID=cee298a0-9c47-4a3a-ac84-23db4d20edd5 as /. No such file or directory. This most likely means the partition has not been formatted."

But of course it has been formatted and is my / partition running CentOS 5.3 as I type. how to fix this to get CentOS 5.3 upgraded ? Di I have to use LABEL in fstab and menu.lst for my partitions,or perhaps just for my root partition ? Any other ideas why this is failing ?

General :: Fsck And Manually Mounted Filesystems?

Nov 12, 2010

I want the filesystem of my external drive to be checked periodically after a numer of mounts. I put 2 in the sixth colums of fstab for this partition

Code:
/dev/sdb1/mnt/hdext3rw,dev,sync,user,noauto,exec,suid02
and I use the tune2fs to set the maximum mount count to 32.
Code:
tune2fs -c 32 /dev/sdb

now the mount count is 34 and the date of the last check is not recent, so apparently the auto fsck has not been performed. Probably because this partition is not mounted at start-up but I usually mount it manually.

Ubuntu :: General Error Mounting File System

Apr 13, 2011

I have a dual boot Xp and Ubuntu 10.10.

Recently I was downloading some upgrades in Ubuntu and unfortunately the power to the system got off.

Thereafter on booting it comes to the Grub menu and I'm able to select the OS from the list but if I choose Ubuntu it comes up with a message "General error mounting file system" and the terminal is activated. However, if XP is selected it boots with no issues.

/dev/sda6 is ubuntu installation
/dev/sda7 is swap partition

I went through lot of threads over the net and tried fsck, e2fsck and other variations of that command but at the end all I get the message as

it says sda6 is clean but for sda7 it says :

Superblock invalid trying backup blocks.... Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda7 at the end it suggests "u might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device>"

refering some threads here I tried my luck with live CD and the command : sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sda7

Ubuntu :: E: Could Not Perform Immediate Configuration On 'util-linux'

May 15, 2010

I ran into this problem myself, and I've seen that others have had the same problem when updating from Karmic to Lucid via apt-get. There is a bug in apt for Lucid, and it has been noted on one of the Ubuntu lists

This is a simple how-to and a work-around to the upgrading with apt-get:

1) Update your sources.list file to replace all instances of 'karmic" to 'lucid' : $ sudo sed -i 's/karmic/lucid/g' /etc/apt/sources.list

2) Run apt-get update: $ sudo apt-get update

3) Run a regular upgrade; $ sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Here is where the problem comes in. Apt is looking for the util-linux package, which is part of upstart-job, but someone apparenlty forgot to write the code to tell apt-about this (whoops!)

So, you now need to install upstart-job by itself. By skipping this step you will get the error message when you try to run step 5: "E: Could not perform immediate configuration on 'util-linux'.Please see man 5 apt"

4) $ sudo apt-get install upstart-job

5) Now you can run apt-get dist-upgrade: $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Slackware :: Skype Not Working With Latest Util-linux?

May 19, 2010

I've found that my skype stopped working with recent -current updates ( around beta ... ). It was looking for a libuuid.so.1 library - on checking I found the 64-bit version but no 32-bit version - quite strange as this has been working fine since my original slackware64 13.0 installation. Anyhow, I got the 32-bit util-linux package, did the 32-bit package convert thing and skype is now working:

1. convertpkg-compat32 -i util-linux-ng-2.17.2-i486-1.txz
2. un-archive
3. copy the libuuid lib to /lib and soft-link in /usr/lib

I didn't install the whole compat package as this is not really necessary I think.

The above mentioned program file contains a header file <asm/bitops.h>, that I need to use in the program. It seems that this header file is not recognized by the system, and it needs to be included somewhere in the system so that the terminal would allow me to compile this program.
