Mar 18, 2010Yesterday I had to reboot for some updates to take effect. Now, when I click on my Thunderbird icon, it won't open. Instead I get an error message "Failed to execute child process "thunderbird" (No such file or directory)" What is the proper command line to enter in properties so it will work again?

Sep 2, 2010I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and after a recent software update, I found that my web browsers crash constantly. Firefox stays open for a few seconds and then dies and won't restart. Google Chrome keeps giving me the "Aw, Snap!" screen. Seamonkey and Epiphany run for a while and then crash. After some research, I uninstalled Flash, but that didn't change anything.On a possibly related note, I've been informed of disk errors during boot and prompted to fix them twice in the same two week period.

Jun 18, 2011I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while now on my 500 gb external hard drive, and for the most part I've had little to no problems I couldn't fix with a little common sense. However, recently my computer was taking an unusually long time to boot up, so I restarted, which normally works just fine, but just as I restarted the system had begun to boot. Now when I boot I get the following:

I haven't tried an Ubuntu LiveCD, because I lost mine (making a new one is difficult with our current internet connection) and I feel I would get the same results. At the very least, I would like to be able to get all my music, videos, etc. off the drive, but I would prefer being able to fix it completely so as not to have to buy a new one.

Mar 1, 2010I have a dual boot PC with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.1. The problem did start with Ubuntu 9.04. I think the problem started around the same time I added a Seagate FreeAgent USB hard drive for backups. The GRUB OS list will come up after the PC boots. I can select Vista and it will start w/o a problem. If I try to boot to Ubuntu the PC will restart itself. It may try and start Ubuntu MANY times until it eventually gets started. I have tried to repair the problem with no results so far. I have tried it with and without the Seagate device attached.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Install On USB Hard Drive - Wouldn't Restart
Apr 26, 2011I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 onto my external hard drive yesterday for use in an dead laptop. Hard drive on the laptop is dead and has no operating system. Downloaded the iso for 10.10, as well as the Universal USB Installer. Everything went well, and Ubuntu started up and loaded onto the laptop. I was so thrilled to have my old laptop working again! (it's much better than the netbook I'm on right now)
Restarted Ubuntu after creating a partition on my external hard drive, and it wouldn't restart. So, I went back to my netbook and reformatted the hard drive to factory specs, and started the process over again. Now, when I try to boot the old laptop from the hard drive I get a message that says, "Multiple Active Partitions" and it won't boot from the external hard drive.

Feb 1, 2010Is it possible to have a tri-boot system ? I currently have a dual bootsystem on mydesktop. Win XP & Ubuntu. I want to add SUSE 11.2 but don't know how to go about loading it onto my machine. On restart the computer does not recognize the CD in my rom drive and only asks if I won't to load Windows or Ubuntu. How do I go about adding another OS to my hard drive ? I have an old Gateway with 130Gb hard drive and plenty of unallocated drive space and 512Mb of Ram. I use Windows rarely (almost never but do need it for some applications) and mostly rely on Ubuntu which my wife and I both like and use daily but I want to look at and experience other Linux installations as well

Apr 30, 2011I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

Mar 13, 2010I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).

I insert the flash drive into the usb terminal and it registers that I've inserted it. However when I go to open it or when I drag files to the flash drive icon nothing happens.

Jan 11, 2010i have xp and ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. format and install xp again, before that i copied all my desktop xp files to my drive f: using ubuntu but drive if is "compress drive to save disk space" threw xp, so when i reinstalled xp every time i click on drive f: this message comes up "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an association in the Folder Options control panel", if i enter f: in the address bar it will access f:, but is there a solution for this i mean i am going to be coping files from ubuntu to xp all the time i don't want to mess up another drive.

Apr 5, 2010Whenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

Nov 22, 2010I have a pencil case I carry with a USB hub and 9 USB sticks in it. I like their unique icons and their root windows to pop up upon insertion. If this is answered elsewhere, I looked several times in several ways on google and these forums.
I tried this:
The autorun.inf file on the USB root written this way:

Then put the BlueFlashIcon.ico icon image in a folder titled BlueFlashIcon In Ubuntu (Mav) I get the new personal icon image for that USB stick appearing on the desktop but the USB root window won't pop open automatically when the stick is inserted. I have to dig to the desktop, find it and click it or go into Places on the menu. If when I put nothing special on the flash, no autorun.inf, no icon image, then the window for the USB pops open upon insertion, which I like, but only get the generic icon that looks the same as all 9 external drives. The labels are unique but icons offer faster recognition over reading labels, when they are needed, much nicer to use~
Ideas? Do I have to use .svg icons or another kind of text file? How do I set up a unique icon for each USB drive AND have the window pop up upon insertion?

Apr 3, 2010After downloading Red Hat 9.0 as three ISO files and then burning them to CDs I'm having a problem I didn't expect. The first CD loads fine, but then when it's time to change CDs for the next disk the drive tray won't open. I would guess the reason is because the CD drive has been mounted by the installer, but once it's got it how do I make it give it up and open the drive tray?
I use Puppy Linux which is lovely and fits on just one CD; - only I'm trying to get an old HP Netserver with scsi drives to play nice and run on Linux and it doesn't like Puppies.

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.
- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.
So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked
I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.

Sep 19, 2010I don't know why, but all of a sudden when I plug in a Corsair flash drive with a fat32 files system, it registers on the notifier, but when I try to open it in Dolphin, Dolphin opens in the /home/documents folder. Ditto when I try it as root. Media won't open to anything, and when I click on the Corsair listing in the folders on the left side of Dolphin, I get the error message: unknown file system 'vfat'. I have used this drive for over a year with no previous problems, and can access it in 11.3 on my laptop, so I suspect that a setting or something in my system has changed.

When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.
