I installed the latest Debian on a computer to make a backup appliance. No GUI.When the computer starts, everything is okay. The DHCP client is running, the network interface have an address, fine.If I do a /etc/init.d/network restart (or stop + start), no more DHCP client. t is stopped when the interface is down. When the interface is up, I have to start it manually.1 - is it normal ?2 - isn't ifup's job to launch the dhcp client ?3 - can /etc/network/if-up.d be the right place to resolve this ?

I also noticed the same for Ubuntu (which I don't use or could care about) and am trying to understand what is the correct way now for Debian and what changed? I set up my interfaces file just fine on one of my computers and everything works. On my desktop its a no go. This is what I've done. I set my interfaces file to look like this

Then I uninstalled network manager (sudo apt-get remove network-manager-gnome). Now I can restart my computer, but I do NOT get a static IP of 112, instead I get the last working dhcp given address (.104). It connects and I get internet using .104.
BUT, if I run

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
then it DOES work. It changes to my address .112 and the internet works. But when I get that I get an error SIOCDELRT: No such process found (or something similar to that). But after it sits, it still finished with [OK] and my internet works. Clearly something is amiss though. Because it doesn't go to the static IP imediately. I even tried setting up a rcS.d link to a file with that networking restart command, but still no go. It starts with the .101 IP.
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)

I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhenever I choose "Restart" from the GDM screen, GDM appears to shutdown, and the first TTY is displayed with a login prompt at the bottom (assuming I haven't used that TTY). I am by no estimation a patient individual, but I waited a solid minute or two for something to happen, but nothing ever did. I end up logging in as root on that TTY and running "shutdown -r now" to get the job done. This is a shared computer, and ideally any user should be able to perform shutdown options graphically from GDM.The only mentioned workaround doesn't apply to me as I am using the nvidia driver, not intel.

This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.
I've found a lot of pages of how to fix the issue on older releases of dhcpd and ubuntu.

I have tried creating the file and giving it permissions to be accessed, but that isn't solving the issue. I tried to go through some of the older fixes, and one was really close to working but lacked the same folders as I have.

I've recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop. I installed a bunch of compiz software from the software center. I used ..... to figure everything out. However, somethings didn't work; such as the cube wouldn't change to the sphere, and the windows animations wouldn't work. When I restarted my computer, the cube changed to what I had set. The windows animations, however, didn't. How can I get all of these effects to work, and to take effect without restarting the computer?

Been using Ubuntu for over a month now (My first foray into Linux) and I love it...BUT I'm having an intermittent problem that seems to be getting worse:Ubuntu will be working fine....then I'll go to open a program (like Chromium or Thunderbird) and it won't open. If I already have Chromium open, it might become unresponsive. If I'm downloading something, it will start acting weird (Like last night- I was downloading c.600MB file and Ubuntu went into dysfunctional mode- and said it was downloading a 2006453 GB file!)
Also, when it goes into dysfunctional mode, any dialogue boxes that come up (like the shut-down confirmation box) will be blank- just pure white- with no text or buttons visible.I can't even run any terminal commands when this happens, to try and diagnose the problem, because either terminal won't open, or if it does, it will be blank like the dialogue boxes- i.e. the purple background will just be replaced by pure white, with no cursor or text).I'll then restart the computer when these things happen, and then I'll get the "The disk for /tmp is not ready yet or not present" and have to press "f: to fix it- then it will boot up and work fine- sometimes for the rest of the day...sometimes for 5 minutes.
Since I don't see anyone else complaining about such behavior, I assume the problem is with my 'puter or my installation? If anyone has any ideas, please help. I really don't want to have to switch to a different distro- as I love Ubuntu///and I don't want to have to reinstall - as I have it configured the way I want it and plus it's on a partition (Still need to keep Win-D'ohs around just for when I want to use Magicjack)This is starting to happen several times a day...HELP...can't. I am using Scientific linux 4.6. I have also suse linux an windows xp are in stalled. After installing the boot loader and making souse as default booting system every thing is fine . I can boot into scientific linux. The booting is normal. But when i want to restart it it is not working. The computer just hangs.

I built a desktop a year or so ago, which runs like a dream. I have installed many OSes on it but the problem persists. If it tell the PC to restart it does everything right, shuts down but the PC remains on before it can restart. The OS shuts down and nothing is running, but the desktop stays on. If it helps, the PC shuts down fine. Just an annoying issue if I get updates in Windows/ Ubuntu etc.

Currently to do that I just hibernate that OS and, when the computer turns off, I restart it and select the correct partition.
I do not really want to have to press the on button again every time I want to switch between partitions. I figure that there must be a way to make the hibernate action restart instead of shutting down.
How do I make the hibernate action restart instead of shutting down on:
Windows, or Ubuntu

The company I work for has a Dell Poweredge 6850 that keeps pretty much everything (databases, websites, etc).
The server had a Virtual Drive created from 2 Physical Drives. Since the HDD space was getting low, we got a new drive, inserted it, formatted and rebooted the system.
But the system now refuses to start, giving an FAILED message, something related to EXT2 partition that cannot be read at /dev/hda1.
