Is there a way to permanently, completely and utterly disabling the "feature" that stops me from opening my CD drive? I suspect it is the same thing that asks me if I want to play/mount/etc things when I plug them in. I don't - I just want to be allowed to use my computer without silly hindrances and interruptions. What is it that tries to take over my computer in this way?

I am trying to use thunderbird to connect to gmail. followed the instructions on the gmail help section to set up thunderbird and opened ports 995 for pop and 465 smtp on my router. When that did not work I posted on the thunderbird forum. It was decided there I had a problem with debian since both the thunderbird and router settings were right. doing more research I used nmap and netstat to check for open ports and it seems to me I only have tcp 80 and udp 138 open. downloaded firestarter hoping to solve the problem but in the events section it does not show thunderbird trying to connect to any port. Is this a case of not understanding what I am looking for here. Is there some way to open all ports on debian and then using firestarter to block the traffic I do not want.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have just switched over from firestart to gufw.I have set all incoming traffic to deny and all outgoing traffic to allow.I have rules set for incoming traffic, and have only opened 1 port on my system for torrents. My router also only has the same port opened which again is for torrents.I use "Network Tools" which is included on squeeze and do a portscan of 192.168.1.100 and 127.0.0.1 I get all kinds of crazy ports coming back as opened. What is even stranger is if I do a few scans, these ports change, so one port on one scan may come up as open, then it will disappear and a different port may show as open.
Mind you none but the torrent port is forwarded in my router, I have no idea what any of these other ports are, or why they are even showing up.What the heck is going on? I dont think this is normal? Am I at any higher risk for attack?
Where is now, in new Debian systems, the internal text file where the
adequate medium (live systems recognize a medium /dev/sdb1 if I connect my phone tablet)
has to be present if used?

I'm trying to get my Intel HM55 GMA HD graphics card to work in Debian Lenny.As the vanilla Xorg didn't have any support for it, I manually compiled the last stable Xorg source (1.7.1 - such a pain) and the Intel driver. But when I try to launch X, I get the following message :

I've just installed Debian Squeeze from a live CD. When I open a web browser (be it iceweasel or epiphany) and try to go to google.com, it tells me it can't resolve the host name. [Edit: They do, however, allow me to go anywhere on debian.org, minus the search feature] I also get the same error when I try to go to my website running on a local server. However, when I type the server's IP address (192.168.0.10), it goes to the website fine. Basically, any program I run that needs to resolve a host name returns an error, with the exception of the host command:
I've tried changing my DNS server IP from 192.168.0.1 (my router, configured to provide DNS) to 192.168.1.254 (my internet modem, also configured to provide DNS). That didn't help any. Then I changed my DNS server IP to the same one used by the modem, and now everything works.
I've tried googling my way out of the issue, and I've found where someone had the same issue as I've got and fixed it by adding "blacklist ipv6" to their /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file, but that didn't work for me.
So, recap: Why does resolving domain names fail for certain applications (except the "host" program) when the DNS server IP is that of my router or modem (which works fine for all of my other computers), but suddenly works when I point the computer straight to my ISP's DNS servers, and how can I permanently fix the problem?
I have a Broadcom BCM4312 LP-PHY in this machine. I was informed theres an open source driver for broadcom cards (brcm80211), but it doesn't seem to support this chipset. In the spirit of Debian, is there another driver available?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install the openconnect VPN client on a server machine, Debian 7 Wheezy, and APT is trying to install a lot of dependencies. I think it's trying to install the whole desktop environment.I was searching the web but all articles are for desktop machines and nobody mentions my problem with the dependencies. I also have openconnect installed in two Gnome desktop machines without problems.

I have this one comp with an Radeon (MSI-R7850) card in it and its been working fine untill I tried to open Blender (3D creation Studio) today. Blender pops open and crashes. I opened it in command line to get the output but I dont know where to go from there. Blender used to work just fine on this comp. does on my others (they're NVidia).

I am using a kernel with no initrd. I have had this kind of panic before. Usually it means that the kernel can access the hard drive because the driver for the controller or filesystem isn't built into the kernel.
The kernel is 2.6.34 vanilla.
My IDE controller is a Silicon Integrated Systems SiS 5513, and I built the driver for it into the kernel BLK_DEV_SIS5513=y
My /boot (hda1) is ext2, and everything else is ext3

Having trouble with mounting drives, I have a usb pen drive that mounts no trouble now I've installed ntfs-3g and modified the fstab. however i can't write to it. I get the error as shown in the attached screen shot.

I am trying to set up a wireless 'test' box to use on a private club (11,000 acres). The initial tests won't need anything fancy, it will just be checking the visibility of a hotspot from a high-point in the middle of the property. But if it proves to have good visibility, later tests will be (hopefully) promoted by the club and made aware to members. I would like to set up a captive portal to redirect them to a comments page where they can post a quick message if they were able to connect ....
Most of the examples I see online of captive portal are based on having an internet connection and/or a NAT scheme set up. I just need a hotspot and a single web-page for these promotional tests. If possible, I would like to trigger any devices capable to suggest or otherwise open a browser to go to the promotional landing page ...
Also, one more quick question, this is to eventually be an 'open' internet for this test - most of the wpa set-up examples show using a passkey. Is making an open wifi as simple as not including the passkey or is there something else I would need to be doing?
I have a java application that I wrote recently. It runs off port 9955. The application runs great on my mac server. When I installed it on my linux box i cant get to it from outside the box. A port scan shows the port as closed. I flushed my iptables, did not help. I can telnet into the app locally, from the server and it works great. I cannot telnet from outside the server. I have a reference to the application in /etc/services as a tcp port (which it is).

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.
- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.
So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked
I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.
How can I make a bootable usb drive with GParted?
Is there a package that I can install to do this.
I think my root drive is 100% full causing strange problems with my video server. What steps can I use to see what's taking up the room on the drive and perhaps identify files that can safely be deleted?

How to run a fsck on a mounted drive? I attempted unmount and it said no. I suddenly got an error 4 and trying to run a check, and it aborts with can't cause mounted.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have installed a core debian install on the NAND on a little ARM dockstar, which is fine as a slow little media storage server but really i need to put squeezebox server on it and my media collection. Theres no issue slapping in a 2.5 usb HD in to the dock with my media on ... the issue i have is i do not have room in nand for the server application/associated dependancies (plus a lot of read/write issues if i put them in nand) so i am wondering if its possible to ammend the configuration somehow to have apt automatically install the server software (a pig to do manually with all the dependancies) to the USB HD (rather than the default nand paths) without affecting the operation/dependancies in the core install in NAND

I didn't figure out how to map the network drive on my Windows server (currently learning to replace this with Debian as well) to my Debian system.
I have read about 15 links but keep getting the following error: Mount Error (6): No such device or address

I have 2 hard drives both are 278.9GB in a mirror raid 1. Why does 2 partitions show up? Are they referring to each physical hard drive? I want to believe that this is the same partition and not two different physical hard drives since both are in the same 'start' and 'end' range. Is that correct?
I'm trying to set up an SSD as a cache to my external HDD (which is where my installation of Debian testing/stretch is installed). My installation is using LVM 2. I'm trying to have the SSD cache the entire external HDD, and not just one of the partitions (such as the root or home partitions).

Must I "operate" on this drive via a live session or something.
I want to move my old system to a new drive. Currently I have Debian installed with following configuration:
I have an encrypted system where everything is encrypted except /boot. Currently I've /boot and / installed on a 16 GB mSata SSD and /home on a regulard HDD. I've got a 500GB SSD for Christmas and want to move the whole system to the new SSD.
I just wanted to ask if I've got the process required to to this down:
1. backup root-directory (/) without and /boot /home using tar keeping file-permissions and owners to ext. hard drive
2. backup /boot and /home separately using the same method
2. replace HDD with SSD remove mSATA SDD.
3. boot via live-usb
4. create appropriate volume groups, partitions, setup encryption etc.
5. extract backups to appropriate partitions
6. chroot to old /.
7. edit fstab
8. reinstall grub
9. create new init ram img.
I'm pretty sure I've got steps 1.-6. down but I'm very shaky on what to do next.
Basically, I have no trouble booting off a really old kernel like 2.6.18-6. If I try to boot off the newest one installed with Lenny, I get errors such as "mounting /dev/ on /root/dev failed...ditto for /sys on /root/sys" almost as if it's failing to find the drive. This finishes up with "target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init" and I'm dropped into a busybox shell.It's an ordinary SATA drive, which is being used as an OS drive only. It seems as if something has changed with the newer kernel, but I have no idea where to start or what to look for.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running Squeeze (in VirtualBox on a Win host), and I need to clone my drive to a bigger one and boot from that drive. I used gparted from a live cd for the cloning, and got the following result with fdisk -l:

Recently tried to make RAID1 on MBR partitions scheme on Debian Jessie - debian-8.1.0-amd64-DVD-1. The issue - I have unable to boot from second drive after grub-install /dev/sdb by any ways. RAID1 itself for / swap and home is fully functional. Decided to try the same thing on GPT, same story. How to boot from second drive on most recent Debian Branches?
