Ubuntu :: How To Restart Network Adapter (not Service) Without Restart?
Mar 13, 2010
I have a suspend problem in my laptop. Sometimes, when resuming from suspend, the network adapter is down (that is, the network does not work and the light of the network adapter is off). Restarting the network service doesn't work, because I think that the system forgot about the hardware, and probably the driver should be reloaded.Does anyone knows how to do that?(ps. /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work, because the hardware driver is not being recognized anymore).
whats the difference between restarting/stopping apache using 'service httpd restart/stop' and apachectl restart/stop. I know that using 'service httpd restart' is actually a script in /etc/init.d/httpd but what about apachectl?
If I restart the network service, not all interfaces come back up. Is this expected behaviour or does something need a kick?
Code: [root@@aspire3500 ~]$ service network restart Shutting down interface eth0: [ OK ] Shutting down interface wlan0: [ OK ] Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ] Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ] [root@@aspire3500 ~]$
But, when I restart the network service this IPv6 address is gone. How could I make it as a permanent IPv6 address( that should be edited or deleted when I want but not when I only restart the network)to my interface?
I am using # uname -rmi 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5PAE i686 i386
# cat /etc/*release* cat: /etc/lsb-release.d: Is a directory Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga) CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
I have noticed that after few days of ideal system it will stop its network interface. To resolve this I have to login to the machine it self and then issue # service network start Is this a feature. If this is not a feature then what is this. As an workaround I am thinking of adding service network restart in cron tab for everyday in night when I am not using it.
I have linux server which 6.2 very old which was installed long back. CVS is running there . problem is sometime the port doesnot listen sometimes listen if i do netstat -an.It is weired. not sure how to restart the CVS service in the 6.2 server
I have a box Suse 11.1 with a service that (I dont know why) every day stop at the same time. Im finding why it come to a halt but in the meantime I would like restart it automatically. As root I insert in crontab the line:25 16 * * * /etc/init.d/service startBut it don works If I launch manually /etc/init.d/service start (or stop) it works
I have just finished the upgrade of the latest version and I'm at the point of my system restating.
My system automatically tried to restart but on the restart I got the 'terminal' view. It stopped when asking for my username (it never normally asks for this before the grub menu) and then password. I didn't get any further than that.
I now have on my screen (still in the terminal view before the grub menu)
"name@name-desktop:...$ "
I'm on my phone now so I don't actually have the symbol for before the dollar sign but your know what it is. The raised S on a 90 degree angle.
I have an HP Deskjet D1460. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and HPLIP 3.10.2 that came with the distro. I am in a plan of moving my windows PC to ubuntu in my bussiness, and this is the first of them. Trying to solve all the problems before converting a second one. All seems to work quite well and almost out of the box... and that is a huge step from the last distro i tryied 2 years ago. So, my difficulty now resides on the printing. I am using a small VFox program that manage some of the aspects of the bussiness, in wine. It works without problems, but... when I print, all the pages get printed like 1cm below than when it was printed under windows. The problem is, that I use the printer to fill some forms that came pre-printed, and now, I am printing over the other text instead of the white spaces. I read a little, and try to adjust the HWMargins and the ImageableArea in the ppd of /etc/cups/ppd/ but it was like if I was doing nothing. Do I miss a step? Do I need to restart a service or something after changing the ppd? The margings when using the printer gui from Ubuntu are all in 0, and for that i need like a minus something.
I neded to make some changes to the httpd.conf file. Afterwards I tried restarting, but it won't restart. It's saying port 80 is already in use. after checking via lsof -i :80 I get this result:
I've after latest jessie update a problem with service samba restart. If I use "service samba restart", there is a timeout (after long time) and error.

Whats going wrong. "service samba restart" should bring no error message if the service is not running previously.
Has anyone noticed that when using NameVirtualHost's in apache that the service httpd restart command is broken? Also it seems system-config-bind has glitches too.
I have a process that I cannot kill with kill -9 how to go about this?
[Code]...
It is an openvpn process but I cannot retsrat the service as I alreday have another openvpn service running on the server so when I do openvpn service restart, it won;t know which service to restart.
When ever i am giving the command service nfs restart in fedora14 iam getting the following:
And when typing the command service portmap restart in fedora 14 i am getting the following:
When i tried this in redhat and centos it was working in my class room but when i am trying it in real time it is not working so what does it mean and how to resolve the issue.
I go and restart ssh and I get this weird message. thought I should be getting ok or fail message, at least thats how I remember it. What do you think?nate@universal-mechanism:~$ sudo service ssh restart
i have installed dhcp, there i declared the subnet and network,i used command include "/etc/dhcpd.conf.jutu1"; to start and other files, but it show me this error when i want to restart the DHCP, if you need more information contact me, i have configured this file too jutu1, but it don't let me to restart dhcp from /etc/init.d/dhcpd restart, this show me this message
Alright, so I upgraded my old fedora 10 server to Fedora 11 with a netinstall CD, but now service httpd restart is broken. I already had to delete the old config file and reinstall apache, but now I can't restart it. I can kill it and then start it manually, but it never stops the running instance and fails to bind the port. I know it's because /var/run/httpd/htpd.pid is in the wrong place, which would be /var/run/httpd.pid, but do I have to make a symlink every time I want to restart it? I edited all the config files to point to the right place, but the system does not honor them. What do I do?
I am running Fedora 11 with an Oracle 11g database installed. I came to check on it and found out that the oracle service had stopped. I also have a script that gets run by cron every minute. I noticed that the last entry in the log /var/log/cron was March 24 at 4:26. Which was really close (not exactly to the second but within a few minutes) of the last log entry in the database translator logs (the database was processing data and it outputs a log).
I rebooted the machine and cron started running again, but I can't get the oracle service to start again. Normally it runs at startup, but if I need to run it or check it, I use: Code: /sbin/service oracle restart Is there another log that I could look at to see what would be the cause of the stoppage? How to get the oracle service started again?
I am new to Linux and I am trying to set up a mail server using postfix. I have done all the configurations(hopefully correct) and all the test seems to work except 2 things.
1) Postfix is running but when I try to restart the service it always fails. I checked the /var/log folder and there are no error messages. 2) When I try sending e-mails using outlook, outlook fails to connect to my server.
I am wondering if I have done the configurations properly. I am a little confused in regards to hostname and domain name. When I do a hostname on the terminal I see the hostname that I gave my server. When I do the domainname command however, domain is none. Is it necessary to have a domain to configure postfix? I have myhostname = my.hostname.com what should my domainname = to if there is none. If I do require a domain name how to I create one? I need to be able to access e-mail from external clients.
Just like the title states, as soon as my server comes up, I see the samba share that I made and can browse it just fine.
I don't see the printer share nor can I print to the shared printer until I execute service smbd restart from an ssh login. Then I see the printer and then I can network print.
Before restarting smbd, I do check to see if it's already running and it is (two instances are running in fact). When I restart smbd, there are still two smbd services running but they have higher PID numbers (and I can then print).
I'm running 10.04. how to make it all start up happily the first time without any intervention from me?
This is my first use of Ubuntu, but I have previous decent experience on Centos & Mandriva. I've just installed Natty 11.04 on a box that was running a mandriva 2010 - and the network is acting quite strange. When I define a static IP for eth0 through the gui, along with route & dns, it sort of works: ssh is fine, vnc too. However, I have an asterisk running on the box, and it is wild: some packets get lost in the box.
An ngrep shows the packets reaching the interface, but they dont show in asterisk !!! I've done a ufw disable, iptables is empty (why cant I service iptable restart btw ?). ip route list show decent routes (eth0 default); When I switch to DHCP, it is better, but unstable... If i plug a wifi usb stick, it seems to be better... Is there some known issues that could explain this behaviour ? I'm using RHEL 5 with the Enhanced Security. Using the suggest NISPOM Red Hat documented settings (located on the system; copy - paste) I have managed to audit failed file open accesses however, this setting only retained if I enter it at the command line (/sbin/auditctl -a ). If I reboot the system or restart the service all my -a (not -w) located in the /etc/audit/audit.rules are not retained.
I'm running VNC Server on CentOS5 on a brand new installation, this is for some of my students to use specific software via VNC on their machines from home that they otherwise don't have access to on their Windows machines. This has been working fine on our previous server for a few years but the hardware is now outdated so I have upgraded and put a fresh install of CentOS 5 on. This works fine for about 24 hours and then eventually one of the session ends up freezing where the user then can see everything on their session, the cursor can move but they cant click a single thing.
