Ubuntu :: Firefox Stays Open For Few Seconds And Then Dies And Won't Restart
Sep 2, 2010
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and after a recent software update, I found that my web browsers crash constantly. Firefox stays open for a few seconds and then dies and won't restart. Google Chrome keeps giving me the "Aw, Snap!" screen. Seamonkey and Epiphany run for a while and then crash. After some research, I uninstalled Flash, but that didn't change anything. On a possibly related note, I've been informed of disk errors during boot and prompted to fix them twice in the same two week period.

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my new Asus Eee PC 1215T, and I'm having trouble getting Internet access. When I first start up or reboot the PC, I'll have network access, but not Internet access. I'm connecting via a WAN at my university, and so the first thing you have to do is "register" the computer on the network (by visiting a certain website on their intranet) before it will allow you to access the Internet. Takes about 3 minutes to register it. I have enough time to *begin* this registration process, but I've tried several times and I can't get all the way through it before I mysteriously lose all network access. Unfortunately this is a brand new machine and came without any OS installed, so there's no way I know of to test whether this is defective hardware or not.

I have been working with a Advantech AIMB-780W board to be used in the PC's at my company and have recently run into some problems with the on-board Ethernet ports.
I am running Linux on the PC, specifically Fedora 13 (kernel 2.6.33.6-147.i686.PAE is the latest update I've tested i think).
Originally after installing the PC recognizes both ports and I can use the top port (82578DM) without any problems however the default MAC address comes up as 88:88:88:88:87:88. This MAC address is consistent regardless of which Linux OS I install, I have tried Fedora, Ubuntu and Cent OS.
If I try to use the bottom port (82583V), which has a more logical mac address, it will work for a few seconds. However once I try any extended contact, for example a yum install or file download using a browser, the connection will stop working.
When checking dmesg I am presented with a spam of:
Code:
pciehp 0000:00:1c.6:pcie04: Card not present on Slot(134)

This can't be duplicated by anything specific, but I know it's not out of RAM at this point. The console keyboard and mouse are inoperational, and the monitor display seems to be going through test patterns, which turns out to be that the monitor is trying to sync to video output which is switching on about once a second. I can ssh into the box and see that many processes that were running are no longer running, for example gnome-session... and that once per second there is a new X process invoked with a different auth-for-gem parameter, per below:
/usr/bin/X :0 -nr -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-Kynptf/database -nolisten tcp
(one second later...)
/usr/bin/X :0 -br -verbose -auth /var/run/gdm/auth-for-gdm-GfBhRk/database -nolisten tcp

I built a desktop a year or so ago, which runs like a dream. I have installed many OSes on it but the problem persists. If it tell the PC to restart it does everything right, shuts down but the PC remains on before it can restart. The OS shuts down and nothing is running, but the desktop stays on. If it helps, the PC shuts down fine. Just an annoying issue if I get updates in Windows/ Ubuntu etc.

Am trying to set up a new system but am getting some strange behavoir. I've administered an Irix system before. I have opensuse 11.3 installed with gnome running. When i enter a bad user id in the windows login screen, the bad authentication causes the x window manager to crash and leaves the system in the ascii terminal mode login. I then have to login as root and do an init 3 , then init 5 to get the x server started again an get the windows login started. Has any one seen this behavior before and how can i fix this. Been hunting through /etc/X11/xdm to see what startup scripts could be causing this.

I installed Fedora 15 last week, on my main PC, and I absolutely love it. Defintely my favourite operating system. Now I have a few questions. I thought I would put them all in one thread, instead of making seperate ones. I did search before I posted, and I cant seem to find any solution to my problems. So here it goes.
First question, I am using evolution for my e-mail program/client. My email addresses are all hosted by hotmail. Now I have set them all up correctly, but cant seem to send e-mails(I recieve them perfectly fine). I am using the "smtp.live.com" server, and using SSL encryption. I have tried messing with the settings but have had no luck. Has anyone figured out how to fix this?
Second question, I play minecraft frequently, and I am currently starting the program via terminal [java -jar /home/username/minecraft.jar], which works flawlessly. However it is too slow(open terminal, type it in. I need a simple click), is there any other way to start minecraft?
Third and last question, What is the best way to close minecraft? I notice if I just close it(via right click, and close, or clicking the X) it freezes and stays open for a long time. Is there any better way to close it?

I've got three user accounts, 10.10 running on eeepc. Two of them work relatively well, but the on the third one firefox keeps crushing every 10 seconds or to be more precise every 2~3 link clicks.
There is a firefox crash info but no specific problem is being suggested. Same goes for terminal - clear.
Doesn't matter if I delete the 'old' third user and put new one. FF behaves always the same on fresh account. It also affects minefield.

I'm having a problem with Firefox going dark (application so busy it stops responding) while it is loading web sites. When I switch to the terminal and do "top", it shows "compiz" and "Xorg" as the most busy applications. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and Firefox 3.6.17. Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

Every time I launch Firefox and go visiting some websites, I notice it freezes for about 10 seconds. Not always in the same websites, but it always happens sometime in the first 2 or 3 minutes of running. I can see the hard disk led is ON all the time the browser is hung.
My operating system is Linux and I don't currently have any extension/plugin installed here.
I have no form completion, no history and have no more than 20-30 bookmarks.
Has somebody noticed something similar, or know how can I debug this to find out what Firefox is doing or trying to do?

We're currently running a web site on CentOS 5.5 running Apache - Tomcat - Mysql. A part of the web site runs slowly or it would appear to be.
The part in question returns records from mysql about approx 200 - 400 rows of data.
The first point of call was the SQL database we've managed to fine tune this. The problem I have is with IE7 and IE8 when I run Firefox or IE6 SP2 the rows return in about 9 seconds. I use IE7 or IE8 and it takes about 20 - 25 seconds.
Could this be an APACHE problem?

I'm having a few problems with flash objects in Firefox. When I load a page with flash - ..... for example - the flash object is just a grey box and firefox hangs for 30 seconds or so. When firefox finally responds again all that's left of the flash object is a black box. Does anybody know what the problem is? And even better - what I can do to fix it!
For background info - flash was working fine in F12 before I updated to F13. Used the install DVD for F13 to perform the update. I'm running F13 64bit with KDE, Firefox is showing Shockwave Flash in the addons list. Originally installed the flash plugin using the instructions from mjm wired:
Code:
[mirandam@charon Download]$ sudo yum install nspluginwrapper.{i686,x86_64} alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686
[mirandam@charon Download]$ sudo yum install flash-plugin I've tried removing those packages and reinstalling but no luck.

Server - Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts
Client - Kubuntu 10.10
When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem. Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...
relevant entry in /etc/fstab:
server:/nfs/dan/Documents /home/dan/Documents nfs defaults 0 0
relevant entry in server's /etc/exports:
/nfs/dan/Documents client(rw)

This has happened multiple times. I'd be running firefox and it would crash for whatever reason. I'd try to restart it and it would tell me that it's "already running as another process."
ps and top show no firefox. killall can't kill it. I found a few forum postings saying to delete the .parentlock file in the firefox directory. That allows me to start it, but all my personalizations and settings are gone. I have to each time create a new profile and copy everything over.

After some use, firefox will not restart from the panel or a terminal. Looking in '.mozilla/firefox' I find:
Quote:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 dave dave 15 2010-02-19 20:55 lock -> 127.0.1.1:+2189
The number at the end changes everytime I remove it. Is this something trying to get in or something trying to get out? Or what? This has been going on for a while.

1). Since last few days my firefox does not restart. In order to restart, I have to remove .parentlock even when I closed the firefox properly after my previous run
Firefox restarts happily when it crashes, and after two crashes, it apologizes but crashes the third and fourth time :-)
2). The other problem is that it crashes a lot on applets.. I use my school blackboard which uses applets a lot (for different utilities), and it crashes 1 out of 5 times on running an applet. I think it due to the IcedTea and/or Java (TM) plugin 1.6.0_06-b02. I have both plugins enabled in Firefox plugins list.

A few days ago an upgrade to FF 3.6.3 was pushed at me by Mandriva. I accepted it, of course.
Since then, firefox refuses to restart after a shutdown, and there are no error messages in any log or in the bash window if I try to start it that way.
I tried a couple of times to uninstall/reinstall it, but no joy.
Finally figured out that if I reloaded the .mozilla directory in my home directory from a daily backup, FF would restart.
This suggests that FF 3.6.3 is corrupting something either while it is running or when it shuts down.
It's pretty consistent, and makes it rather hard to use FF. The lack of error messages is making it rather difficult to sort out.

I 'am trying to install Java on fedora but I 'am stuck a this line on this tutorial [URL]. Use spacebar to read the agreement. At the end type yes to proceed with the installation. To make Firefox use the installed plugin type:
su -c 'yum remove java-*-openjdk-plugin'
su -c 'ln -s /opt/jre1.6.0_14/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so'
Restart Firefox and Tools -> Addons -> Plugins. If the plugin was successfully installed you should see Java(TM) Plug-in among the plugins. Now, if you also want to run java programs using Sun's java type in a console:
My shell
[root@shadow ~]# ln -s /opt/jrel.6.0_16/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
> /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
You have mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@shadow ~]# ln -s /opt/jrel.6.0_16/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
ln: creating symbolic link `/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so': File exists
After restart Firefox i don't see any new plugin. ?

If one re-boots an openSUSE computer with open Firefox, the Firefox restarts when the system restarts. Actually, every application that was open, restarts. However, sometimes, Firefox does not restart. When I perform ps in bash, I see a few Firefox processes do run, but there is no graphical evidence. If I run Firefox explicitly - stll, no graphical evidence. If, however, I kill all Firefox processes, it can now be started normally.Does someone know a reason for such peculiar behavior ?
