I have tried eject /dev/cdrom, sudo eject, pressing the eject button but whenever i do , it just opens for like 1 second then closes right back. is this fixable within Xubuntu, or is this a physical problem with the cd drive?
View 4 RepliesI have downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 alternate PPC to install on my old emac.
It starts fine the installation process, and I want to have only Ubuntu on this machine so I erased all the mac partitions and create 3 new partitions
/ = root
swap
and /home
Everything goes well until I get the message that there is not a partition called Apple_bootstrap and I get stuck there.
I snagged the 10.10 alternate install ISO for PPC and got it up and running on a 1ghz G4 eMac with 1gb of RAM and a 60gb HDD. It runs... OK. It could be a lot better. I'm planning to shut off the bluetooth and CUPS services since neither apply to this system; are there any other services I can shut down, or any other tricks I could do to make it run a bit more smoothly?
What about alternate window managers? I realise that the PPC platform kinda limits me, but what about TWM or FVWM?
How can I make Compiz work on this eMac? It's the original, 700 MHz, 1 GB RAM, Ubuntu 10.04. It was enough trying to get the xorg.conf file to show any video, but now I want to be able to use compiz so I can have a faster experience.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWith my ubuntu iso in the dvd drive, I do not get any boot from options for it to be used as boot drive within the boot order from the boot control panel. On startup with the alt key pressed I only get the Mac drive but when I change the boot to the other option (network) and press the alt key on startup, I get the boot order screen with the Mac HD and also the Ubuntu iso but cannot get the Ubuntu to highlight and use, just the Mac remains highlighted. On the same screen I get a very small wrist watch to the left of the screen that the mouse can move up and down but not to the side.
I am using a windows usb keyboard and usb mouse, I have used all manner of keyboard combinations to get the Ubuntu disc to highlight but nothing seems to work. Within the drive section, the "My Mac" drive is locked and cannot partition it or change anything about it. Has anyone any ideas that I can try? I did not want to get a Mac keyboard and Mouse as yet seeing as I wish to change the operating system to ubuntu.
I recently came into (temp) possession of two Original, white, 700 MHz eMacs. I have only started to play on one of these so far. Installed Ubuntu 10.04 PPC from Alternate Install CD - two times actually (because I thought I may have screwed something up the first time), but both times it seemed to go without a hitch.
After install and restart, I cannot drop into a shell, all I get is the black screen. I'm probably forgetting something really obvious, but I've tried Holding "Shift" and "F1" and control+alt+F1 (and F2, F3, F4, F5, F6), tried the esc key; with two different Apple USB keyboards. I'm really just wanting to load an xorg.conf file and reboot.
Should I have been trying to do this just after install, but before restarting? I can get into Open Firmware just fine, but have no idea what I'd do from OF except start off the CD again. I should mention I installed Debian just fine and am pretty confident MintPPC would work flawlessly, but I am trying to get Ubuntu 10.04 on here.
i recently got a hold of a macbook 3.1, installed ubuntu 10.04 on it(Single boot). When i got the macbook the OSX that was installed on it had some serious issues, so without the OSX restore disk i had nothing so i hopped on my friends macbook pro and dled Ubuntu burnt it to a disk and installed it flawlessly on my macbook 3.1. During that installation i did remove the old OSX partitions completely and created a new one for ubuntu(the whole HD). later i was able to find a OSX Leopard backup on the interweb so on my pc i downloaded tit and burnt it to a dvd. When i try to boot from startup i just get a blinking cursor it stayed like that all while i took a 2 hour nap. Note that from within ubuntu i could see all the files on the disk so thats issue number one
Number 2 is that im trying to burn a dvd from a iso in ubuntu and when ever i insert a blank disk it says its unreadable and when i try to eject it it gets stuck. i have to hold the mouse button while it reboots in order to get it out. Whats causing this? how do i fix these issues. Eventually i want to startover and put mac osx on there (for steam) and ubuntu for primary use.
I started by running ubuntu 10.10 live CD and I did an install on my iMac. I went the route of just deleting all the data off of the iMac (I have a time capsule backup) and ran the install. Well when i booted the computer back up then Ubuntu did not come up as expected.After a few trial and errors I decided to just reinstall the Mac OS. I put the wrong disc in (it was an upgrade disk and not the disk that came with the iMac) so I wanted to eject it. That was a no go. Keep in mind i was using LOGITECH KEYBOARD and not the wireless keyboard that came with it. So when my computer boots up now all I get is the grey screen. After a while it tried to boot up Ubuntu. The screen has a flashing cursor, and then it disappears and the screen stays black.
I can get the computer to the point where if I hold the option key (alt on my logitech keyboard) then the option to boot to windows or the CD comes up. I can't boot to either.I've tried the command (windows key on the logitech keyboard) ctrl+o+f start up keys to try and get the command prompt up and that didn't work eitherI've tried a few other things and they didn't work. I'm not even sure my wireless keyboard works on bootup. I've tried to hold down the option key for the dual boot selection screen and it doesn't pop up, but it pops up when I use the logitech keyboard.Oh someone PLEASE help me. I have an Intel core iMac which was bough with the last year I believe. I would like to get the disc out or at least get Ubuntu up and I can eject the disk from the Ubuntu OS.

That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

I am putting ubuntu onto a ppc (emac 1.25Ghz) and I was wondering weather to go with the last officially supported release (6.10) or to try the newest (10.10)?
The machine will only be used to play music and brows the web, nothing heavy but it MUST play flash content (primarily from .....). I have had varying degrees of success on an older G4 ppc (700 Mhz) but never got it to play flash. are the open source alternatives to flash any good on the machine?
I followed the reefit manual instructions to install. I tried using the installer package and it seemed to work fine, only when I reboot there is no option which operating system I want to use, and when I go back into OSX reefit isn't there anymore. I also tried the manual install putting it into the system folder on OSX and I get the same problem, it's gone again after I reboot. (Im using the option button to boot into Linux right now, and when I do my Linux partition is called "Windows", I don't know if that matters either.)

Right clicking on the desktop CD icon eventually ejects it. But it still can't be ejected using the button.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe only way I can eject a cd from either of my drivers is to restart my pc. The buttons don't work and neither does the eject control withing the device widget in my panel. It says the device is in use even though I am done with it. This is stupid. Everything else in this operating system is beautiful and works great (except the version of Audacity had to be replaced with one that is actually usable.) Other than that everything is great , way better than windows - but I can't do something as SIMPLE as eject a cd??? How stupid is that?? I am actually angry - being angry at a computer is something that happens when using windows computers - should not happen whilst using OpenSuse.

In FC, I can't get the DVD drawer to stay open. When I press the eject button, r slides out, but then slides right back in again immediately. When I start the SystemTools->DiskUtility (Palimpsest), the Eject function is grayed out.The drive itself seems to work just fine, I used it for the FC install from LiveCD. In Windows, the drawer works properly.The only device info I can see for the drive is DH16AAL, I don't know if that's a model no. and I don't know the manuf. Says SCSI, but it's got a SATA cable. It's an mp3 player, it's used for music, the player is an html5 player that runs in fullscreen mode of firefox.It's connected to a TV via HDMI. I've set all possible power options so it never sleed, idle, hibernate or close. Same thing for display, never dim or turn on screen saver. Although the TV is not ALWAYS on the PC's HDMI input, sometime switching to TV Tuner and other time to PC display.So if we switch the tv's input to tuner and the to PC, opensuse won't re-detect the display and the TV will say NO SIGNAL until I completely reboot the PC ... very annoying ... The other problem is that the TV is far from the server so I need to use VNC and re-open firefox, go to the player and re-set fullscreen mode. But worst, I can only use VNC once. If I want to reconnect via VNC, I need to login SSH, restart service and then I can connect ...1. How can we set VNC to ALWAYS accept connection and that from a fresh boot ?

The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. The installer prompts me to insert disc 2, but it seems that Ubuntu still believes that the installer doesn't want me to open the drive, because, when I try to open it, it doesn't open, and a window pops up with the following message: Unable to eject CD-RW/DVD RW Drive DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending

I had my external unplugged at the time... It was actually plugged in at my neighbors. They where watching a movie I had on it; anyhow I plugged it back in went to bed woke up and it took out its own partition on the external.

Is the operating system ever idle for more than a few seconds? If I spin down my SATA drive with sdparm it spins back up immediately. How long will the data in the pipe be available for reading? If I only decide to read the pipe a day later with cat /etc/pipe, will I get all the time values right from the time I started writing?
Conversely, what if my loop only wrote the time every 10 minutes. Will I be able to access everything a day later?
Finally, pretend my loop writes the time continuously (like my first example) and I read the pipe every 30 minutes. If my computer shuts down right before I read the pipe, will the pipe be empty when I reboot or will it hold all that data?
