General :: Migrated From Ext3-disk To A Ext4 Disk - Warning: Unable To Open An Initial Console

Feb 4, 2010

OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:

mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest

modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Get Out The Disk From The Drive

Mar 26, 2011

I can put a CD or DVD in the drive, mount it, read it & unmount it. But I cannot take the disk out of the drive once it has been place in the drive without

1) Physically holding the CD draw open
2) Shutting down SUSE.

As soon as the drive starts to eject the disk, the draw is forced closed again. This happens if the eject button is pressed, or the sudo eject command is issued. For some reason, the draw is being instructed to close again almost immediately after it opens. I've managed to extract disks by grabbing the draw when it starts to open, but I'm afraid I will damage the drive this way.I do not think this is a hardware issue, as other OSs run on this system do not seem to have this problem.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Connect External Hard Drive - "Failed To Open Directory "This IS RJ's"

Jun 1, 2011

i've been using xubuntu for a few days now and i am encountering this irritating problem! i am able to connect other thumb drives and other flash drives to my laptop and they run fine on xubuntu but when i try to connect my 80 gigs external hard drive, it displays the following error message and shows nothing but an empty window of the hard drive with no contents of it :

ERROR:

where "this is RJ's" is my hard drives label and the "xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso" is a file i believe inside the drive. ( is it causing the problem?) this external hard disk is working fine on windows xp. but what is the problem on xubuntu?

Super Boot Disk = A single boot disk that accomplishes a great many common tasks needed to rescue a system.some things that I am looking for in this would be: Virus scan, memory test, bootloader recovery, hard disk drive recovery/testing, gparted, clonzilla.and whatever else you could think of.I see that gparted and clonzilla both have live cd's available..but im looking to only carry one disk.

Ubuntu :: Deleting A Disk Drive ?

Feb 16, 2011

Ok so basically this isn't my harddrive but hear me out. It's a known issue but it only happened after him downloading stuff off priate bay. The harddrive is not detected on BIOS, so you can't boot through it, just the CD Drive is now detected. You can't use SAFE mode as it reverts to another issue, a black screen with a white cursor, no keyboard commands work.

No restoring disks will fix it nor master disks, it's literally a bad *** issue. Thou I can still load things via CD Drive so I used the Acronis Bootable Media and surely enough, it could anaylse data on the harddrives. I thought maybe i'll try PE Bart but once again, loads up to Black screen with White Cursor. So I put in Ubuntu and yes, I can get on the GUI, but I can't install the operating system.

There would always been an issue. something about in/out whilst installing but as long a I can use the tools, then we go onto Disk Utility. When I try to format, the Error Message apprears stating : Eroor creating File System: helped exited with error code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sda2: Input/Output error. This would be the same error i would get via installing and I would have to ignore and eventually whilst installing, from being complete on the right hand side, it would say ERROR or ABORTED after 70,000.

Ubuntu :: Disk Drive Running Constantly?

Apr 15, 2010

Everything was fine for the first 6 months. Now in the past couple weeks, my disk drive is running nearly constantly. I can hear it rattling away in the background no matter what I am doing. Typically, I just have Firefox open, and that disk drive is sounding like it's writing the whole thing over and over.

I've opened the system monitor and looked for something obvious, but everything says, "sleeping". The computer seems to operate fine - no crashes, no odd behavior. What's this thing doing?

Ubuntu :: Disk Drive For / Is Not Ready Yet Or Not Present

Jun 11, 2010

I tried to upgrade to the newest ubuntu version (10.04 I think). Now I can't even boot my computer. After the initial "boot" stuff, the ubuntu screen comes on and then locks up in the process. I get the message "The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or press s to skip mounting or M for manual recovery."I've tried "waiting" overnight to no avail. I tried the "S" command to skip and got the message "[141.233783] Adding 1502036k Swap on /dev/sdb5. Priority-1 extents:1 across:1502036k"

I think the manual recovery is what I need to do. When I type the "M" for manual recovery I get a maintenance shell with the last line being. Can anyone please give me some commands to fix this problem? I have an OLD ubuntu boot disk. How can I get my computer to boot from it? I tried hitting "esc" while booting up to no avail. I also tried hitting F1 while booting up. I think that used to allow me to boot from the CD drive...but doesn't work now.
