Software :: CD Drive Won't Open To Change Disks?
Apr 3, 2010
After downloading Red Hat 9.0 as three ISO files and then burning them to CDs I'm having a problem I didn't expect. The first CD loads fine, but then when it's time to change CDs for the next disk the drive tray won't open. I would guess the reason is because the CD drive has been mounted by the installer, but once it's got it how do I make it give it up and open the drive tray?
I use Puppy Linux which is lovely and fits on just one CD; - only I'm trying to get an old HP Netserver with scsi drives to play nice and run on Linux and it doesn't like Puppies.

Is there a possibility to use a flash drive as a speed up for conventional hard disks? I got the idea to redirect all read ops to the flash drive if the data is already stored there, and to read from the conventional disks if the data is not found there (and during idle time the freshly accessed data from the conventional disk is stored on the flash disk).
Is this already possible with linux standard tools?

I'm just curious - why do all linux distros (all I've seen) run their periodic disk checks during boot? I mean, I understand that a disk should be checked now and then, but why does the system do it during boot, when I'm waiting for it to load, instead of checking them during shutdown, when (most probably) user doesn't need the computer anymore.

I just replaced a DVD-RAM drive in one HP server, The drive is recognized by the OS:
Code:
# lshw -class disk
*-cdrom UNCLAIMED
description: SCSI CD-ROM
product: DVDRAM GSA-T50L
[Code]...
Is there anything I should do when replacing a drive? Didnt think so, but this is going nowhere.

I have no hard drives in my computer, so I have been trying to boot Ubuntu 11.04 from an 8GB usb flash drive. Is this possible? So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. I was only able to get the last little bit which reads mount. mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory. mounting /sys on /root/sys filed: no such file or directory. mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or dirctory. target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init

Mac Hard Drive Data Recovery is needed when your disks are not spinning up, hard drive unmountable, killed a hard drive without backing up, or if you have experienced a hard drive crash.

I've got a raid5 array of 4 disks with ubuntu 8.04 runing on it that is currently still working:
/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdc
/dev/sdd
Smartmontools for /dev/sdc tell that there are 9 sectors pending for reallocation:
Code:
197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 9
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 9
And /dev/sdd has increasing number of reallocated sectors (about 1 every couple of minutes):
Code:
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 1735
/dev/sdc has failed a coulple of times this week (but I have always sucessfully readded it to raid5) . But the increasing number of reallocated sectores on /dev/sdd concerns me even more.
I'm affraid that during removal of /dev/sdd and adding new /devs/sdd disk, raid might fall appart. That's why I would try to do it in Ubuntu Live CD:If the raid falls appart (/dev/sdc fails) during the readding of new /dev/sdd disk, I might still remove the new /dev/sdd and return the previous one and assemble the raid with:
/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
/dev/sdd (old one that was previously removed)
Does assembling Raid in Ubuntu Live and adding new disk for /dev/sdd write anything on /dev/sda, /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc in the process of adding /dev/sdd into raid5?

I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?
I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);
dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)
(a new server,2 CPU 8 core and 8 gb ram)
1000000+0 records in
1000000+0 records out
1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 12.9662 s, 79.0 MB/s (I have not used this server yet) (hw raid1)

I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot. The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?

I exchanged my CDROM drive for DVD drive. The DVD is recognized in the BIOS (will boot to DVD install disc) and in CentOS 5.2 (when I list the hardware), but CentOS must still think it's a CDROM drive. When I run VLC in a terminal it kicks back these errors code...
I think this means that "hdc" is linked to a CDROM configuration somewhere, but I don't know where to find it to change it (or out it). It also appears thee is no DVD module loading. (Of course, I could be making poor guesses.)
I thought there might be something in the fstab, but it doesn't appear there is anything there (for the CDROM or DVD drive)?
Is there somewhere else I should be looking? /dev/*** ?

I'm a Linux newbie but familiar with computers in general. I can install 9.4 64 bit (but no network to update from), but 10.4 and 10.10 both fail -- I cannot get the Allocate drive space screen to list the available drives. Just a blank panel. The drive is listed in the Boot loader panel. The LiveCD works. Disk utility and Gparted are both available. At one point I even managed to mount the 9.4 file system on the LiveCD, I think using "sudo mount"

I'm running a standalone compiz (not in gnome, but just compiz, gnome-do and AWN).I use tracker to search for my stuff all the time, however, since I started using compiz without gnome, when I click results they're always opened by the browser (folders, mp3s, etc).I belive tracker uses xdg-open, and I noticed xdg-open exhibits the same behaviour.Where do I change the file associations xdg-open uses? I've found little to no documentation about it.

I'm running Open Office 3.2.0. Does anybody know how to change the background color of an entire Open Office document? I know that you can change the background of a page in the Format >> Page menu, but this does not change the color of the page area inside the margins. Normally it wouldn't make much sense to change the background color when it just gets print to a page anyway. But I actually wanted to export the document to PDF, and was thinking it would make the PDF look better if I could pick the BG color.

Is there a way to permanently, completely and utterly disabling the "feature" that stops me from opening my CD drive? I suspect it is the same thing that asks me if I want to play/mount/etc things when I plug them in. I don't - I just want to be allowed to use my computer without silly hindrances and interruptions. What is it that tries to take over my computer in this way?

I keep getting an error message saying "The volume uses the FAT 32 file system which is not supported by your system." I've formatted the drive a few times and the problem remains, but only with this one. What should I do? edit: I have tried formatting it to other formats, Ext3, fat 16, etc. but the error message stays the same.

I've had this problem for years but never had the time or the know how to fix it. I still use hardy heron.
I insert the flash drive into the usb terminal and it registers that I've inserted it. However when I go to open it or when I drag files to the flash drive icon nothing happens.
I want to transfer some files from my old computer (hardy) to my new one. Btw I tried formatting the flash drive and that didn't work.

Open a terminal and change the directory to the download destination.
