May 23, 2011How can I open a usb stick which was locked with windows 7 bitlocker from ubuntu 11.04? I have the password but I cant see anywhere to enter it.

Oct 18, 2010I have searched and read threads about the Bitlocker, grub and TPM issues that might show up, but I can't draw any conclusions as some information contradict each other. To make sure I don't screw up my pc as thought I need to make a new post.
At work I'm supposed to run Windows 7 and encrypt the win-partition with Bitlocker. I have installed Windows, turned on the encryption and it ties into the TPM. But as I am moving over to the *nix department I want to run Ubuntu as dual boot to check everything rusn fine with all the systems I need. Before I installed Windows I partioned the disk:
1,5 GB for system/bitlocker requirement
147 GB for Windows, C:
85 GB which is empty where I intend to install Ubuntu (not formated yet)
I boot into Windows with my bitlocker/TPM key on an USB-stick. Without the usb-stick the pc won't boot. Now, before I try to install Ubuntu I want to make sure to do it the right so I don't mess up the Windows installation or won't be able to boot the pc at all.
There seem to be several "schools" to this. Some suggest I should have installed Ubuntu first, then Windows and then encrypt. Some say, no worries just fire away and install since you are not planning to read the windows-partition from Ubuntu. Or an alternative, install but make sure to deactive the encryption during installation. Some say, install but make sure grub is installed in (multiple choices) location.
Ubuntu :: Windows Preview Working Only For Open Windows?
Sep 18, 2010I enabled the windows preview effect from CCSM but it seems to be working only for the open windows. For the windows that I have minimized, no preview is shown when I hover over them in taskbar
Is this an expected behaviour ?? Can I change it to be shown for all sorts of windows irrespective of open/closed states ??

Obviously I would like it to open on top, and be in focus.I have Visual Effects set to NONE (so that VNC works correctly). If I set Visual Effects to NORMAL or EXTRA, I do not have this problem (that is, the window opens on top).I'm using an up-to-date, stock, 32-bit, Ubuntu 10.10 system with Gnome windows manager. Feb 5, 2011So I install Ubuntu 10.10 on a multi-drive, dual boot with windows 7 computer. At almost the end of the install, I see "running grub-install sda" or whatever it is. sda is my windows drive.So rather than asking where to install the bootloader or give you the option like it used to, it just did it to my "first" drive.
What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

Jan 23, 2010I currently dual boot windows XP Pro with Ubuntu 9.10. I made a mistake last night playing with gparted and lost my E drive, which had all of my music, games and movies plus is where my Ubuntu install was. I then ended up reformatting the drive with windows and reinstalling Ubuntu 9.10.My question is how can I put my windows files on my E drive without going through the hassle of reinstalling windows.
I have a 20g IDE drive where my windows install is, windows and Ubuntu both tell me this drive is failing, (I have used it for booting since 2002, so I am not that concerned with it), another 40g IDE drive for more storage and a 160g SATA drive where Ubuntu is again installed. I want the SATA drive to be my main boot drive now, so how can I clone my windows boot to the other drive. I tried gparted but could not figure it out. I have gparted burnt to cd, booted with it and just don't understand how to use it.Also, if I clone this boot drive to the SATA drive, do I need to change jumper settings on my 40g to master when I take out the 20g drive.20g master and 40g slave on first IDE channel and 2 CD devices on second IDE channel and SATA drive on first SATA connection. I read somewhere that it is better to keep the cd devices on another channel than the disk drives.

I want to install Windows 7 in a second partition of the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. Windows 7 did not see the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. So I understand that I need to format the partition where Ubuntu is running, install Windows 7 and later on Ubuntu 10.04 which will create the boot for the three systems. But I want to backup Ubuntu's installation, and after installing Windows 7, install the backup. So I will need to add the file for the dual booting. How can I do it? Is it there any piece of software that could create the three booting option that I need?

The installer went through Successfully no issues i did the Reboot as Prompted and Choose the Ubuntu from the Duel Boot Screen but when it loads it can not find any Build information. What did i do wrong?Could it be that i need to have it attached to the same drive as my Windows operating System or am i not doing something correctly? I've formatted the drive a few times and the problem remains, but only with this one. I insert the flash drive into the usb terminal and it registers that I've inserted it. However when I go to open it or when I drag files to the flash drive icon nothing happens.

I think the virus was found but somehow I have done something to cause a invalid drive error message at startup. I read that gparted may by a way to fix this, but I don't want to do anymore damage.

Jan 11, 2010i have xp and ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. format and install xp again, before that i copied all my desktop xp files to my drive f: using ubuntu but drive if is "compress drive to save disk space" threw xp, so when i reinstalled xp every time i click on drive f: this message comes up "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. create an association in the Folder Options control panel", if i enter f: in the address bar it will access f:, but is there a solution for this i mean i am going to be coping files from ubuntu to xp all the time i don't want to mess up another drive.

Nov 22, 2010I have a pencil case I carry with a USB hub and 9 USB sticks in it. I like their unique icons and their root windows to pop up upon insertion. If this is answered elsewhere, I looked several times in several ways on google and these forums.
I tried this:
The autorun.inf file on the USB root written this way:

Icon=BlueFlashIconBlueFlashIcon.ico
Label=Blue512MB
Then put the BlueFlashIcon.ico icon image in a folder titled BlueFlashIcon In Ubuntu (Mav) I get the new personal icon image for that USB stick appearing on the desktop but the USB root window won't pop open automatically when the stick is inserted. I have to dig to the desktop, find it and click it or go into Places on the menu. If when I put nothing special on the flash, no autorun.inf, no icon image, then the window for the USB pops open upon insertion, which I like, but only get the generic icon that looks the same as all 9 external drives. The labels are unique but icons offer faster recognition over reading labels, when they are needed, much nicer to use~
Ideas? Do I have to use .svg icons or another kind of text file? How do I set up a unique icon for each USB drive AND have the window pop up upon insertion?

I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..

Apr 3, 2010After downloading Red Hat 9.0 as three ISO files and then burning them to CDs I'm having a problem I didn't expect. The first CD loads fine, but then when it's time to change CDs for the next disk the drive tray won't open. I would guess the reason is because the CD drive has been mounted by the installer, but once it's got it how do I make it give it up and open the drive tray?
I use Puppy Linux which is lovely and fits on just one CD; - only I'm trying to get an old HP Netserver with scsi drives to play nice and run on Linux and it doesn't like Puppies.

I can't open a keygen or even drag it to the desktop!!! I tried to uninstall McAfee only to find I'm not authorized to!!! From tasks OR processes - on MY computer!!!
So do I need to get rid of McAfee or is this windows' doing?
