Ubuntu :: Binding Windows Key To Applications?

Dec 3, 2010

I'm trying to migrate over to Ubuntu, and there is one really useful feature that I would like to replicate in Gnome. In Windows, I can hit the "Windows" key on my keyboard, which opens up the start menu.

Is there a way that I can replicate this behaviour in Gnome? Can I map the Windows key to opening the Applications menu?

Ubuntu :: NIS And Binding To YP Server

Jul 14, 2009

Each time my machine reboots, it takes about 2 minutes for an attempt of the YP server to bind (then it fails).

Code:
jim@LinuxBox:~$ /etc/init.d/nis restart
start-stop-daemon: warning: failed to kill 2469: Operation not permitted
* Starting NIS services
* binding to YP server...
* ....
--> repeats 10 times <--
* .... [fail] [ OK ]
jim@LinuxBox:~$

The previous is a YP server command while running. What happens at boot time is similar. I think I need NIS for my work. This looks like an old common problem (maybe on AMD64 - Ubuntu; which I have). The following link has a good description of NIS and this particular problem. It is a complex problem that I am spending some time working on. It looks like my problem may be that an NIS master has not been created. [URL]. I am trying to share files and run remote desktop with XP machines on a local network. The lack of NIS server may be contributing to my difficulties.

Ubuntu :: Cant Install Or Use Windows Applications In Wine

Apr 26, 2011

I am a newbie to linux, my OS of choice is windows xp, my computers will not run windows 7 so as an alternative I am seriously thinking of changing to ubuntu after the windows support for xp finishes. with this in mind I have installed ubuntu 10.10 as a second OS on my pc. I like the speed, looks and ease of use of the OS. the only draw back is that I have a lot of windows applications that I run and sometimes beta test for a large british software company, I saw that a windows emulator was available (wine), downloaded, checked the documentation and the database, only to find the only software on the database was games. I have tried several applications (not games) only to get the error message "the file is not marked as executable". is there something I am missing or are they not supported by wine? and could all applications be supported in a future release?

Applications :: Connection To Windows Pc?

Sep 5, 2010

at present i have a windows PC with 2 odbc connections 1 to Linux / mysql the other to novell server (micro focus cobol in read only mode) i use access on the windows PC to run query's on novell and write them to mysql on the Linux machine. this is very slow and causes problems because of access limitations. i cant connect the Linux box into the novell server as our IT Manager will not allow this but i can copy the data files to the windows PC first.

How can i connect to the windows PC to access the odbc link on there, and what program would i use for this, would mysql be able to do this? if this cant be done then i can use samba to view the files on the windows PC but then how do i set up an link into the data files (on the windows PC a micro focus cobol driver had to be installed) how would to connect mysql to this ?

Ubuntu :: Rememberrunning Applications - Windows - Reopened Automatically At Login ?

Feb 7, 2011

I would like that the windows I am working on are reopened automatically at login, so I checked

System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options Tab -> Check Automatically remember running applications when logging out.

It works but, unfortunately, sometimes windows are reopened in different workspaces. I have six workspaces and I usually keep a lot of windows opened, so rearranging them takes long.

Is there a way to ensure that windows are reopened in the same workspace?

Fedora :: Interleave Windows From Several Applications In GNOME3?

May 28, 2011

I have yet another minor source of confusion in GNOME3... Imagine this: you have opened several terminal windows which cover most of your desktop, and a Firefox browser window. In Firefox you have an image which contains some data that you must type to one of the terminal windows. Since the data is in an image (not as a text), you can't use cut & paste to transfer it from Firefox to terminal.

In GNOME2 (and Windows), you can interleave the Firefox window and the terminal window so that the terminal window is on top of the Firefox window. You can place the terminal window so that it does not cover that part of the Firefox window which contains the data that you must type to the terminal window.

But in GNOME3, if I activate the terminal window, all open terminal windows are shown on top the Firefox window. In order to see the Firefox window again, I have to minimize or move those terminal windows which cover the part which I want to see while typing into the one terminal window. I think this is clumsy. Is there any way to switch back to the GNOME2 behavior which allows interleaving windows from different applications?

Software :: Why Do Windows Applications Start Faster

Jan 12, 2010

I noticed that on Linux, applications are much, much smaller but they take forever to start sometimes (namely, OpenOffice). However, MS Office starts up super fast, but I see it is huge (it needs 2GB to install).

Is there a trade-off between size and start time? If so, is it possible to "enlarge" some of my programs so they would start faster? I have plenty of unused disk space, and a few larger programs wouldn't really hurt.

Ubuntu Servers :: Binding To IP's Not Assigned To Ethernet Card?

May 26, 2011

I have a server hosted with Hetzner in Germany and have had it there for over a year now without any glitches. Last week very abruptly they deactivated the server giving me a very vague reason of "I was using another IP that was not assigned to me". After several calls I had the server reactivated but am still puzzled by this and Hetzner Germany has been unable to provide me with any proof, logs, traces or anything for that matter to validate their claims.

My primary (physical) server has one IP allocated (static) and IPv6 is turned off. On top of this server I run 3 VMware servers, 1 Ubuntu, 1 Debian, 1 Windows and all 3 of these VM's have static IP's configured.

I've done traceroutes, netstats and looked through every single config file with a fine toothcomb without finding anything and the problem has not reoccured either.

What I would like to know is if there is some way that someone could craft an attack of some sort that could cause a server to do this, to latch onto another IP not assigned to its NIC?

Ubuntu Servers :: Dovecot Binding To LDAP On Reboot?

Jun 9, 2011

Today I'm trying to configure Postfix+Dovecot to use Samba4's LDAP database for authorisation and mail delivery. As I can see from /var/log/mail.log, Dovecot tries to bind to LDAP right after reboot , but fails:

Code:

pdcadmin@PDC1:~$ cat /var/log/mail.log
Jun 9 13:06:46 PDC1 dovecot: auth(default): ldap_bind
Jun 9 13:06:46 PDC1 dovecot: auth(default): ldap_simple_bind

[code].....

Believing this to be a sign of succesfull bind, I couldn't understand the reason behind it. Why do I need to restart or reload dovecot service to make it work (though it fails on the next step with "dict_ldap_lookup: Search error 1: Operations error" and "451 4.3.0 ... Temporary lookup failure")?

Ubuntu :: Large Black Rectangles On Tabbed Windows Various Running Applications?

Oct 14, 2010

Recently, I've run into a rather interesting but also quite annoying instance of graphical corruption: a large black rectangle covering all or part of the window various running applications. What makes it interesting is that this graphical corruption only seems to occur in applications that have at least 2 tabs open. I've confirmed that it happens in pidgin, nautilus, gnome-terminal, and gedit; the latter 3 are shown in the attached screenshot.

Clearly, it has something to do with my graphics driver. I'm currently using the open source radeon driver in ubuntu 10.04 with a Radeon 9800XT.
