Applications :: Connection To Windows Pc?
Sep 5, 2010at present i have a windows PC with 2 odbc connections 1 to Linux / mysql the other to novell server (micro focus cobol in read only mode) i use access on the windows PC to run query's on novell and write them to mysql on the Linux machine. this is very slow and causes problems because of access limitations. i cant connect the Linux box into the novell server as our IT Manager will not allow this but i can copy the data files to the windows PC first.
How can i connect to the windows PC to access the odbc link on there, and what program would i use for this, would mysql be able to do this? if this cant be done then i can use samba to view the files on the windows PC but then how do i set up an link into the data files (on the windows PC a micro focus cobol driver had to be installed) how would to connect mysql to this ?

Dec 3, 2010I'm trying to migrate over to Ubuntu, and there is one really useful feature that I would like to replicate in Gnome. In Windows, I can hit the "Windows" key on my keyboard, which opens up the start menu.
Is there a way that I can replicate this behaviour in Gnome? Can I map the Windows key to opening the Applications menu?

May 28, 2011I have yet another minor source of confusion in GNOME3... Imagine this: you have opened several terminal windows which cover most of your desktop, and a Firefox browser window. In Firefox you have an image which contains some data that you must type to one of the terminal windows. Since the data is in an image (not as a text), you can't use cut & paste to transfer it from Firefox to terminal.
In GNOME2 (and Windows), you can interleave the Firefox window and the terminal window so that the terminal window is on top of the Firefox window. You can place the terminal window so that it does not cover that part of the Firefox window which contains the data that you must type to the terminal window.
But in GNOME3, if I activate the terminal window, all open terminal windows are shown on top the Firefox window. In order to see the Firefox window again, I have to minimize or move those terminal windows which cover the part which I want to see while typing into the one terminal window. I think this is clumsy. Is there any way to switch back to the GNOME2 behavior which allows interleaving windows from different applications?

Apr 26, 2011I am a newbie to linux, my OS of choice is windows xp, my computers will not run windows 7 so as an alternative I am seriously thinking of changing to ubuntu after the windows support for xp finishes. with this in mind I have installed ubuntu 10.10 as a second OS on my pc. I like the speed, looks and ease of use of the OS. the only draw back is that I have a lot of windows applications that I run and sometimes beta test for a large british software company, I saw that a windows emulator was available (wine), downloaded, checked the documentation and the database, only to find the only software on the database was games. I have tried several applications (not games) only to get the error message "the file is not marked as executable". is there something I am missing or are they not supported by wine? and could all applications be supported in a future release?

Jan 12, 2010I noticed that on Linux, applications are much, much smaller but they take forever to start sometimes (namely, OpenOffice). However, MS Office starts up super fast, but I see it is huge (it needs 2GB to install).
Is there a trade-off between size and start time? If so, is it possible to "enlarge" some of my programs so they would start faster? I have plenty of unused disk space, and a few larger programs wouldn't really hurt.

Feb 12, 2011all programs and windows that I start on my F14 x64 machine getting either started in the background or minimized. This is driving me insane. My Gnome (no compiz) has that annoying behavior since F13 and I've already gone through any windows/appearance/effects settings - w/o any success.

Nov 16, 2010I have opened dolphin and some other application (avidemux, dolphin, firefox,etc). in the first window (dolphin) i have a file. i drag it to another window/application and if i release the left-button of mouse, the window/application of the drag destination become active (raise). is it any way to make it to come in front/top (active) once mouse is over window while still dragging, before releasing the mouse? there is "focus" stings (focus under mouse/raise with the delay) in "windows Behavior". the focus under mouse is working fine, but is not working while dragging. it would be very handy to see where i drop the file, especially if i only see a small partition of the destination window, which is behind other windows.

Jul 29, 2010I am running a week old 11.3 install with KDE (no desktop effects), compiz, nvidia. Last night I was working away. I had Thundertbird, Firefox, and VMWare Workstation open. Maybe something else, but I don't remember.
I was typing away. Maybe I hit something on the keyboard, but maybe not. All apps just disappeared, meaning that they're windows were not open and were not minimized to the panel. I could open *new* windows, and I fire up a terminal and ran top, which showed that they were all running, just not visible. Obviously, this is a Bad Thing.

Apr 6, 2010I just installed Ubuntu to dual boot with my Win 7 and I want to fix the user permissions so i can install STEAM so then I can game and install other windows applications. So i tried to install steam with wine installed and i get this error message..The file '/tmp/SteamInstall.msi' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.
Can some one please help me with installing Steam and other windows applications correctly?Also I already tried to fix it with terminal code that still didnt fix it.

System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options Tab -> Check Automatically remember running applications when logging out.
It works but, unfortunately, sometimes windows are reopened in different workspaces. I have six workspaces and I usually keep a lot of windows opened, so rearranging them takes long.
Is there a way to ensure that windows are reopened in the same workspace?
CentOS 5 :: Flashing KDE Applications In Windows List Of Gnome Panel?
May 1, 2009I am running CentOS 5.3, Gnome Panel 2.16.1. It seems some KDE applications just flash crazily in the windows list (task bar in Gnome panel). Usually when a new event happens to a window, it flashes to remind the user (I hate this *feature* anyway, but can't disable it...) But this time, when I switch from another workspace to the workspace that has (more than one) KDE applications (like kile and kdvi), they just simply start to flash, and the flashing window list appears on every workspace unless you click it.
I tried to disable the animation from gconf-editor, without success. Does anyone have similar issues? It is really annoying..

Oct 14, 2010Recently, I've run into a rather interesting but also quite annoying instance of graphical corruption: a large black rectangle covering all or part of the window various running applications. What makes it interesting is that this graphical corruption only seems to occur in applications that have at least 2 tabs open. I've confirmed that it happens in pidgin, nautilus, gnome-terminal, and gedit; the latter 3 are shown in the attached screenshot.
Clearly, it has something to do with my graphics driver. I'm currently using the open source radeon driver in ubuntu 10.04 with a Radeon 9800XT.
Ubuntu :: Windows List Applet Does Not Follow Icon Theme For Certain Applications?
Mar 30, 2011I am using Faenza Icons, which is reflected in the icons on the throughout the system except in the windows list applet for certain applications like Firefox and Chrome in the gnome panel. The indicator applet and the menu do show Faenza icons for all the items (including firefox and chrome). I am yet to check for other applications which do not follow the icon theme. I want the windows list to be consistent with the menu and it feels strange that certain applications follow their own icons disregarding the theme I have selected.

Nov 7, 2010I had been happily on Jaunty Jackalope until they stopped supporting it so I took the forced upgrade and it's HORRIBLE!
I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.
It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.
Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.
I see there's another version out there...10.04.01.LTS. I'll try that. It can't be much worse.
