Ubuntu :: Large Black Rectangles On Tabbed Windows Various Running Applications?
Oct 14, 2010
Recently, I've run into a rather interesting but also quite annoying instance of graphical corruption: a large black rectangle covering all or part of the window various running applications. What makes it interesting is that this graphical corruption only seems to occur in applications that have at least 2 tabs open. I've confirmed that it happens in pidgin, nautilus, gnome-terminal, and gedit; the latter 3 are shown in the attached screenshot.
Clearly, it has something to do with my graphics driver. I'm currently using the open source radeon driver in ubuntu 10.04 with a Radeon 9800XT.

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 32bit on three different computers. The problem is that while working, suddenly some of the graphics become like black rectangles which are not refreshed.
This is happening out of nowhere and is very annoying. The problem did not occur on version 10.
however as i mentioned, it occur on three different computers.

I've been using PUTTY to connect to several Linux-based development boxes via SSH on Windows. However, I'm often in a situation where I need several such windows open at a time. I'd like to be able to put these into a tabbed window, similar to how a web browser works. When I'm on a Linux box I just open gnome-terminal with several tabs and start several ssh sessions in different tabs there; but on Windows something like that is obviously not an option.

I have tried loading 11.4 from the DVD from Linux Magazine. Everything goes swimmingly until I get to using it when the screen shows black rectangles, is "twitchy" and nothing works properly. I currently run 11.3 which works fine.

I'm trying to extract the sender id from a fairly large number of files and am having trouble assigning variables from a file. Here is what I have so far, (which is fairly kludgy I know, but it's been some years since I've done any scripting or programming, and I find that I have lost the knack to a large degree).

Yesterday I upgraded my desktop Hp dx2280 which I use at office and HP Compaq Presario 300 Widescreen laptop which I use at home from fedora 10 to Fedora 11. Upgradation was just fine without any errors in both cases. My desktop machine works just fine and I, hardcore KDE lover, am enjoying working. It is just amazing. But sadly my Presario C300 laptop is a mess for KDE. Login is fine And I got the desktop. First I ran xmms and pleased to hear my favourite mp3 song on it. Sound quality -- EXCELLENT.
But for any other application, whether it is Firefox, openoffice word, kwrite, even the Konsole which I love desperately presents me a screen with extra extra large fonts showing only menus like File Edit & so on. I can not see even fourth menu and no scrollbar etc. Even the clipboard gives me the same result. i.e. extra large fonts. While everything is perfect with GNOME, which I am using now. I am not getting what is the problem. Previously I had upgraded my Presario C300 laptop from KDE 4.1.x from Fedora 11 to KDE 4.2.1 from repo of kdetesting. Is that making some conflicts?

I would like to know if there is a window manager that has no decorations (window borders etc) and shows all opened windows in a tab bar. I am using gDevilspie at the moment to undecorate the gnome (metacity) window borders on all windows, but i wondered that my computer could be so much faster, because i dont really need any of that eye candy that gnome provides. I just sign in to ubuntu, and open firefox.

sometimes when transferring large files using scp between my desktop running maverick and other servers running Ubuntu, Debian or CentOS, I get the following error message: 77% 258MB 11.3MB/s 00:06 ETAReceived disconnect from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx: 2: Packet corruptI've found a seemingly related bug report on launchpad here: but the provided "ethtool" fix did not help. I'd be most grateful for any ideas on how to solve this issue. I currently have 10.4 installed. Whenever an application's window is maximized or overlaps the left 1/2 inch of the desktop, the entire desktop becomes very dark. This seems to happen with most GUI applications (with terminal being the exception). Does anyone know of steps to correct this behavior?

I'm a 3D animator and use Blender for all my work. I've been happily using Ubuntu 10.04 without any problems.I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, and now whenever I click the Blender application file I get an error saying that theres no program set to run this application. I get a similar error when I try to run Voodoo (the open-source camera tracker). Mind you, both these programs ran just fine on Ubuntu 10.04. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

I see rectangles in the places where should be text. This happens, for example in Code::Blocks in the build log tab, in the warning lines, the rest of the text is ok. This also happens in certain message boxes of Ubuntu. And in the subtitles text in the default video player.

i have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.

What happens is, the program crashes for whatever reason (I don't know the exact cause, but the program terminates), and then immediately everything on my screen goes black. However, I still have a cursor, and all other programs that were running continue to run (I can access my other game servers from other computers). The cursor changes icons as I move it around the black screen, as though it is interacting with the programs that are still running. ctrl+alt+f2 still works, so at least I can restart the computer safely.

So I booted up lucid lynx this morning and all the text is replaced with rectangles. This is true for the login screen and any applications I can get to open (Some such as Chrome and Firefox will not launch). If I boot into recovery mode and enter the command line, text works as normal.I found some suggestions to run "sudo fc-cache -f -v" which did not fix the issue and one suggestion to edit xorg.conf in a particular way, but since xorg.conf doesn't exist in lucid lynx, that was a no go.I did get a couple of screen shots:

Im not sure why they aren't working - but my startup applications are not running at boot. They run fine from terminal.
I have a startup application for Xchat and the command is just xchat (which works fine from terminal) but it isn't loading at? - I have checked and im not running in safe mode or anything like that - just the standard ubuntu desktop).
Unrelated Question:
Is there a 'global' i.p address I can use to represent all devices on my LAN - so I can mass whitelist in firestarter?

It's really weird, some applications simply don't start up. Skype for one, just shuts down before logging in, and Calibre shuts down instantly, when I try to run it. I've tried to remove and re-install it, but that doesn't do any good.

I have the laptop connected via wireless but it's possible to connect the two either directly with a CAT5e cable or through the router. I'm just wondering what the best way to do this would be.

I have a few hundred images of 30000 x 10000 pixels in size. Each image has lots of text (rendered as pixels) on it. I'd like to translate all text to another language. I speak both languages, and it's fine for me to translate each phrase manually. I need an image editor which can open these images quickly (faster than Inkscape, which needs about 60 seconds to open such an image), lets me zoom and rotate by 90 degrees, lets me erase (i.e. change the color of a selected rectangle to solid white), lets me add text, and lets me save the file as quickly as possible. I'd like to minimize the time I have to wait for the software to load, render and save images. Which is the best program for that on Windows? On Linux?

I got sick of unity yesterday and tried to install Gnome3. While doing this, i ran apt-get update. I believe that this updated my xorg to 1.1+ (or whatever) making it incompatible with the proprietary ATI drivers I'm running. So I tried a whole bunch of stuff, from reinstalling the drivers from the ttyl1 prompt, to doing startx from the command line and using synaptic to remove the proprietary drivers and install radeon, etc, etc.I think the issue right now is that there are bits of the proprietary driver left that are messing with the open source driver. Whenever I do startx, i get artifacting all over the screen, which never seems to go away.

When i run the KDE 4.6.1 netbook plasma desktop, there's a icon in the right upper corner telling how many applications i've running. When I click it, the desktop zooms out and shows me the applications in a graphical way, wich is pretty nice....but...then i can not select an application to switch to and have to wait a certain time out to go back to the running program i had in the foreground allready.
When i change the settings of this icon to show it always in a menu, it does work allright (but is less nice)..
