Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Steam And Other Windows Applications Correctly?

Apr 6, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu to dual boot with my Win 7 and I want to fix the user permissions so i can install STEAM so then I can game and install other windows applications. So i tried to install steam with wine installed and i get this error message..The file '/tmp/SteamInstall.msi' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.

Can some one please help me with installing Steam and other windows applications correctly?Also I already tried to fix it with terminal code that still didnt fix it.

keycode 37 = Control_L NoSymbol Control_L NoSymbol Control_L

It does work properly also on Google Chrome.

Ubuntu :: Install Applications Correctly The First Time?

Mar 19, 2011

Background information: So you know how we choose from a list what applications we want associated with a file type? It's a menu full of applications.I've filled mine with different applications I've reinstalled. There are many repeats of application names, with the only difference being most of them don't work. This is due to changing the installation location, via WINEPREFIX. No biggie.I'm also using Ubuntu 10.10. It's very nice!

Problem: How in the world do I get rid of these unwanted list items? It's very hard to find the ones that are good.

Plan B: The easiest solution, so far, is to reinstall ubuntu and install these applications correctly the first time. Then I won't have all of those repeats.

OpenSUSE :: Some Applications Not All To Print Text In Landscape Correctly

Apr 28, 2011

My setup:
openSUSE 11.4.
Acer Extensa 5635ZG
Epson Stylus Photo PX710W, connected with WiFi

I have just discovered that I can't print text from libreoffice writer/calc if the layout is set to landscape. The letters seems to have been stretched and printed over each other. If I print the same document in kword/kspread everything is printed as it should be. I have generated a pdf of the document and printed from okular/acroread, even then it's not printed correctly. Although it looks ok in okular/acroread. What else that can be seen is that when it's wrongly printed the printout is printed in the opposite direction compared to when it's printed correctly. I.e. the tail comes first on the paper so to say. Where should I begin to search for faults?

Ubuntu Installation :: Gimp - Gimp-help-en - On 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Installing Other Applications And Preforming System Tasks?

Jun 12, 2010

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.

Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)

1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:

2. Then load up the language support application:

3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.

4. Fix'd

I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

Debian :: Correctly Installing ATI Drivers

Oct 17, 2015

I have two monitors, a primary crt which I usually run at 100-160hz depending on the resolution, and a secondary lcd which I run at 144hz. I can't set either to anything above 60hz or any respectable resolution.

I'm running debian 8 with gnome. Apparently I can't use propietary drivers with gnome because it isn't supported and I have to use the open source ones. So I used this website as a guide to install drivers: [URL] ....

I tried:

1. Code: Select all# Debian 8 "Jessie"
deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

Which gave me nothing. First line didn't do anything at all, second one didn't work because 'deb' isn't a valid command.

2. Code: Select all# apt-get update
Worked as per usual.

3. Code: Select all# apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-video-ati
Only one installed, and that was xserver.The other ones failed (werent found or something?). Anyway as per instructions i rebooted and ofcourse nothing happened. I am pretty sure since step 1 was probably meant to add to the repository, step 3 wasnt able to complete.

But my concerns are...
1. How am I meant to do step 1 if it isn't a real command
2. Should I (or can I) change to something other than gnome, because I don't think its worth missing out on propietary drivers just to use gnome.

My card is a hd7970.

Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic Koala - Slow Jerky And Has Odd Freezes Like Windows - Applications Randomly Stop Working

Nov 7, 2010

I had been happily on Jaunty Jackalope until they stopped supporting it so I took the forced upgrade and it's HORRIBLE!

I feel like I'm back in Windows land. Within an hour of my first load I had my very first Ubuntu total-lockup. Just like Windows. In the 18 months I'd been using Jackalope I had not had a single crash. Not one.

It's slow, jerky, and has odd freezes. Just like Windows. Applications randomly stop working and die. Just like Windows.

Is there any way to fall back to Jackalope or is there any hope of them fixing Koala? 'Cause this is wretched.

I see there's another version out there...10.04.01.LTS. I'll try that. It can't be much worse.

Ubuntu :: Correctly Installing Libraries And (non-kernel) Header Files?

Jun 9, 2010

Not I recently installed a package (Vision Egg) that requires the Open GL libraries and headers, specifically, gl.lib and gl.h. I used Synaptic to install nvidia-current and nvidia-current-dev and it now looks as if the required libraries (under different names) are installed in /usr/lib/nvidia-current and as if the required headers are in /usr/include/nvidia-current. I am a bit confused because I also have /usr/lib/nvidia and /usr/lib/nvidia-173.

The installation of Vision Egg fails with "cannot find GL/gl.h" and "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lGL"There is a related post a few years ago under thread 200901 but it relates only to a single file problem that is fixed manually. I'd rather avoid that because it looks like it is easily breakable.Is there a standard way --- that is, a method that does not require error-prone manually changing or linking a multitude of file names --- of ensuring that programs which require GL/gl.h actually find the correct nvidia header file and also that the link loader finds the GL libraries.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Doesn't Display Correctly Since Installing F10 X86-64

May 1, 2009

I have a laptop that doesn't display correctly since installing F10 x86-64. Instead of using the i810 driver, I see the experimental intel driver. I am running on a Dell D630 laptop with the default intel integrated graphics.

Just to note: Running gnome. I tried KDE and I can actually get this to work and display in 1600x1200. I don't want, "well use kde then" to be the solution. Also, in gnome, if I go to the screen resolution option from the menu, the mirron screens is clicked. Even when I detect monitors and unselect the mirror screens and pick the correct resolution, when I click OK, the screen flickers, and I go back to the same screen with the original default values? Wierd.

I got the bright idea to install system-config-display (something like that), which installed fine. I then changed my default resolution to 800x640 just to try it (really want 1600x1200). Well, I decided to reboot. Not the laptop doesn't start, it stops right after loading anaconda, and just won't go any further.

So two questions:

1. What do I need to change to get the laptop to actually boot?

2. How to get the external monitor to display in 1600x1200.

Ubuntu :: Gui Windows Won't Resize Correctly

Apr 23, 2010

i will occasionally open a gui program, for example an ip address calc and a dvd burning program, and the bottom of the window is cut off by the screen; the screen size is put on the most applicable, detectable screen size; on both a netbook with a small rectangular screen and an older desktop with CRT monitor that is square; i could see both of these having issues beyond my own user-stupidity, so i thought i would ask: how do i get to the bottom of the window to see very crucial info? i hover the mouse on the top until it changes to a horiz bar, but it wont drag down;

- i hover mouse on bottom but it wont change to bar/arrow;

- i hover on corners to make an angle bar/arrow but it will only resize horizontally;

- i right click the top border and hit "resize" but it will only resize horizontally;

this, as well as getting my touchpad settings to stay the same after poweroff have been the bane of my existence edit: sometimes these posts are simply echo chambers for me to listen to my own ineptitude; i found how to save the touchpad settings,re-edit: i did not actually fix the touchpad, but i have posted elsewhere so as to not cross-post.

Ubuntu Installation :: Take Windows XP Out After Installing?

Mar 1, 2010

When I bought my computer from a friend, he told me that it had 60Gbs in it. Well, when I began to install Ubuntu Linx 9.10 I came to the point of decission of whether or not to delete Windows XP or run Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows XP. I had a decision to make and I honestly thought I had enough free space to run both. I kept on having problems bringing up Ubuntu. It would go so far and then it would freeze. Well I updated GNOME and I was able to login and try a few things. I of course downloaded and installed the program that I needed to run the program that was running my online radio station. I also downloaded a scanner for to check virusus. I then tried to download some other softwear but I deleted them and kept the scanner and the other program that plays my radio station. Since I did that I logged out and shut down the computer. I haven't been able to get to the point to where I can login again. It freezes. How can I add more memory of free space to run Ubutu. If there is no way of doing that how can I delete Ubuntu and start all over again so that I can again install Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and take off Windows XP so I can run Ubuntu. I really do like the Ubuntu's system. It is so very quick bringing up websites. I have a 32bit download on the CD. I found out the computer was only 16Gbs.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing UNR 10.10 Alongside Windows XP?

When I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely?
