Ubuntu Installation :: 'Bad Primary Partition' After G4u Big Drive To Smaller One

I have recently ghosted, using g4u, an 80 gig drive to a 30 gig drive. The data size is about 15 gig so no problem there. The system does work and it doing everything it should, except for some errors in dmsg log.The thing is though, that the system works! all the services are running and live. And i have years worth of customizations in this machine. Has been running for several years, so i dont just want to reformat and reinstall. Its hard to get linux the way you want it sometimes! So my question is this, is there a way to fix my partition or somehow tell the machine what the current boundries should be?

General :: SSD As Primary Or Secondary Drive On A Small Server?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm pensioning off my 10-years-old home server and replacing it with an Ubuntu 10.04 box. The two storage devices are a Western Digital Caviar Green 2.0TB HD and an Intel X25-M 34nm Gen 2 80GB SATA II 2.5inch SSD (the box has 8GB RAM and an i5 750, if it matters).

I don't care much about boot times (since I don't plan to reboot all that often;-); the main frequent, performance-demanding task will be (re)building large open source C or C++ software packages from sources (as an open source contributor, I do that often).

So, I thought I'd keep the SSD as the secondary drive and the HD as the primary one, using the SSD mostly for the files that can otherwise demand a lot of seeking (esp. in a parallel make).

However, the friendly vendor (perhaps more experienced in Windows systems than in Linux ones) thinks the "normal" way to configure the machine would be with the SSD as the primary drive. I'm pretty rusty on configuring and tuning systems, so, I thought I'd better double check on SuperUser.

CentOS 5 :: Remount Second Hard Drive After Replacing Primary?

Jul 27, 2011

For starters, I apologize if this turns out to be a double post. My windows laptop hiccupped in the middle...

So I had a Linux box with two drives running happily for years. Both drives were in the same logical volume, and the second had a file system on it.

The the boot drive croaked. I replaced it and reinstalled CENTOS (making sure, of course, to be careful to use the new drive). The I put the second drive back into the volume group (and that's it).

I'm assuming I probably need to create a new logical volume, because that's how it was before, but I really really don't want to format it.

Am I missing a step or am I screwed?

Fsck -l showed the following output both before and after I put the drive in the volume group. code...

Ubuntu :: Shrink Windows 7 64 Bit Primary Partition?

Aug 17, 2011

know the best way to shrink the Windows 7 64 bit primary partition (C: drive)? The C: drive was originally just over 900 GB free space. I shrunk it using Windows 7 Disk Management, but it would only let me shrink to 468 GB, which I did. I want to shrink it to 100 GB. Will G-Parted work for this? Will I be able to boot into Windows after I use G-Parted? Or will I have to use the Repair Disc to fix Windows? If so, will the Repair Disc work. I have a new PC. I had Ubuntu 10.10 dual booted with Windows XP on my old PC.

Ubuntu :: Install Windows Xp Instead Of Lucid As The Primary Os On Computer?

I do plan to put ubuntu back on it as dual boot, beings that I don't particularly care for windows for what I use this computer for.I'm usually fairly competent when it comes to installing operating systems and whatnot, but for some reason this computer will not boot from my xp boot cd, irregardless of whether or not I select boot from cd.. It just boots straight to ubuntu.

Fedora Hardware :: Bootup With New Drive - "Primary Disk Not Found"

Feb 20, 2011

My computer set up is this; Pentium 4 Dell Dimension desktop with 2 hard drives. /hda = Linux and /hdb = Windows 7. It is set up to boot to /hda (master) and the Grub menu selection includes an entry to boot /hdb (slave) (Windows). Both disks are ATA. I just bought a 250 GB SATA drive and I cloned my Linux partitions onto this new disk. So far, it seems to be working and all my files are here.

The first problem is when I boot up I get a "Primary disk not found" message and the option to hit F1 to continue or F2 to go to setup. I hit F1 and it continues booting up without any further issues. The bigger problem is when I re-attach the Windows ATA drive; Depending on whether it is Master or not I run into one of two situations(when Master)The machine takes a loooooooong time to boot up, still comes to where I have to hit F1, yet I can boot into Windows or Linux. (when not Master)It comes up fairly quickly, I hit F1 but Windows cannot be found.

When Windows doesn't work and I still boot up, I can't find the other hard drive anywhere. #sudo fdisk -l only comes up with the SATA drive, not the Windows one. So there are 3 things I want that I am not sure how to get;Automatically boot to Grub without having to hit F1 Faster bootup through the bios Being able to boot to Windows or Linux without any problems. Am I missing something? Is this because of a mixed ATA and SATA? Is there something I need to fix in the BIOS? I'm not sure where to look!

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Admin Privileged Applications

Jan 29, 2010

Whenever I try to do anything that requires administrative permissions, including Synaptic, the Update Manager, or installing something on the Software Center, the "Starting Administrative Application" task comes up on the window list, but then the window does not come up and whatever action was supposed to be taken does not happen; no error messages, nothing. Also, whenever I use su or sudo in the command prompt, nothing shows up when I type my password; then when I hit Enter, it gives me an authentication error.

EDIT: It seems that the "Add/Remove Applications" program as well as the Software center do not have this problem. Synaptic and the Updates Manager, however, still do not work.

Ubuntu :: Access To Applications On A Per User Basis?

May 23, 2010

I'm wondering if it's possible to control what applications are available to certain users on a per user basis.

My motivation:

I have separate logins for audio production and general admin. Under Applications > Sound & Video I have tonnes of audio apps, but as I never use these under my general admin account, there's little reason to list all of them.

how is the applications menu configured? I'm wondering because I'd like to create some custom sections.

I am using ssh on windows XP to remotely connect to a UNIX server that provides web application development services. However, when I try to run an application I get an error message saying:Application initialization failed: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable

The ANSYS Launcher could not be started The most likely reason is that your DISPLAY environment variable I either not set (i.e. issue setenv DISPLAY dev:0.0 where dev is your device name) or is set to a device that is not accepting the connection. I was hoping someone could explain to me what the DISPLAY environment variable is and how to set it.

Theres no issue slapping in a 2.5 usb HD in to the dock with my media on ... the issue i have is i do not have room in nand for the server application/associated dependancies (plus a lot of read/write issues if i put them in nand) so i am wondering if its possible to ammend the configuration somehow to have apt automatically install the server software (a pig to do manually with all the dependancies) to the USB HD (rather than the default nand paths) without affecting the operation/dependancies in the core install in NAND
