Ubuntu / Apple :: Adjusting Screen Position With Xrandr?

Apr 9, 2010

I am running a dual boot conifg with OSX and Ubuntu PPC (karmic) on a 2004 G5 and everything is working pretty well - very well actually. The last thing I am trying to adjust is such a simple thing, but I just can't seem to get it. In Ubuntu, the screen position is shifted to the right, covering the scroll bar of windows and the trash can.

No problem, just use xvidtune, adjust the screen as I want and create a custom modeline right? Well, it does not seem to work. Here is what I did:Using xrandr I created a --newmode and then used --addmode to add it to the output I am using (default):

Code:

mieren@G5-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output default --newmode 1680x1050_new 146.25 1680 1820 1996 2268 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync
mieren@G5-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1050

[code]....

Notice how the new mode now lacks the rest of the config information specified in the --newmode above, not sure if this is normal.I can change to the new mode, and the resolution is correct, but the screen is still not adjusted. There is no difference switching between the 1680x1050 and the 1680x1050_new modes - the screen may flash, but the position does not change.

(I also tried adding a mode line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf screen section, but it also has no effect. Actually, there was no xorg.conf existing at all, so I created a minimal one.)It is really annoying to have to adjust the screen position using the monitor controls on every reboot.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Adjusting Screen Brightness

Feb 19, 2011

After installing Fedora 14, I can't seem to make my screen brightness go above the absolute minimum. I've tried editing /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to change the current setting from 20 to 100, but I can't save it, even when logged in as su, it returns "Invalid Argument" when I try to enter the filename of where to save. What do I do?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Screen Position - .The Top Bar Of Any Screen Image Is Just Off The Top?

May 20, 2010

I am very happy with Ubuntu 10.04 that I downloaded, burnt to CD and installed (I am a newbie to Linux), but I am finding a little problem on an old Sony lap-top, with a rather old-fashioned almost square screen. The top bar of any screen image is just off the top, and I can only see a quarter of it, which makes using the max/min and cancel buttons a bit hard to use. I know I can resize the screen, but it goes back to the original next time it is used. Is there a permanent fix?

General :: Adjusting Screen Resolution On Ubuntu 10.10 Booted From Disk?

Dec 16, 2010

I just booted ubuntu from a disk that I burned to try and salvage some files off a hard drive with a failed boot sector (maybe. not sure what the problem is,). Anyway, I can see the files, and I have a large portable hard drive that I can use (a MyPassport 320gig, if I recall correctly). I'm having trouble accessing the drive, and I think it might be because there's something popping up in the task bar that I can't see. Unfortunately, I can't see the task bar! My screen's resolution is off, and I'm having trouble adjusting it. I browsed the various settings and I couldn't figure out any way to change it.

Is there anything I can do? EDIT: Oops! I didn't look into the Monitors options... how embarrassing.

EDIT2: Okay, looks like I can mess about with the resolutions, but all of them still deny me access to the full screen - still can't see the task bar.

Ubuntu :: Screen Position A Few Pixels Off?

Oct 24, 2010

In 10.04 on a Shuttle the screen position is a few pixels off. I fix this with xvidtune for the session. I also get a new modeline. I build a new xorg.conf file (go virtual terminal, stop gdm, Xorg -configure, etc) and move it to /etc/X11. I introduce the modeline in the monitor section and reboot (I could do a service gdm stop...). Guess what, my screen is still a few pixels off. The documentation clearly states that if there is an Xorg.conf, it will be used. So what gives?

This problem has existed since the xorg.conf file was dropped. It is just plain silly that one has to engage in a geeky treasure hunt to correct a few pixels. This adjustment should be present in the System/Preferences/Montors. This is why Linux does not make it with ordinary users, making (superficially) simple things difficult.

Fedora :: Ati Xrandr Dual Screen Weirdness

Mar 8, 2011

I just found some strange behaviour with xrandr. I've got a dual screen setup (both 1680x1050) on which I want to span my desktop. I'm using the ati (amd) proprietary driver from livna to do this. I edited my xorg.conf to include the 'Virtual' line under screen.

When I add this to the "Screen" section:

The driver breaks and I get a resolution of 1400x900 and still not the option to span my desktop.

When I change that to read Virtual 1680 2100

It all works fine but I have to have my desktops on top of each other.

I am using OpenSuse 11.3 (64 bit) on my desktop and I have two (identical) screens connected to its on board Intel graphics chips. Both screens are detected and there is no problem when they are cloned, but if I want to have one screen right of the other (using the command xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of HDMA1, as the KDE settings manager never managed to have any effect), the right screen is shifted ca. 100 pixels to the left and on the right side of it I see the left side of the left screen.t seems both screens are detected if I type XRandR:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual-monitor Mouse Position Jumps When Moving Off-screen

Nov 4, 2010

I have a dual-screen set-up with Ubuntu 10.10. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. I use my lower-resolution laptop screen on the left and a larger monitor on the right. The monitor is also physically higher than the monitor. See attachment for a screenshot.I have correctly set up my displays so that if the mouse is in the middle of the screen it can move from one screen to the other without jumping. The jumping happens when moving off of one screen in an area where the other screen is not directly next to it (some people call this 'the void').

Example: (See the attachment for a visual example of this.) My mouse is in the external monitor (right monitor). As I move the mouse to the top-left of the monitor (position 1), I by mistake go a little too far and instead of hitting the Ubuntu applications menu, I ended up at the top-right of the laptop monitor (left monitor; position 2). I quickly realize my mistake and move the mouse back to the right monitor, but now the mouse is at the middle-left position (position 3).This same error occurs by moving the mouse on the laptop monitor (left monitor) passed the bottom-right position. This is a big problem when scrolling vertical scroll bars on the laptop monitor (left monitor).I am looking for a fix that if the mouse is at position 1 in the attachment and I move the mouse left, it stays at position 1 and does not go to position 2.

Ubuntu :: Locked Toolbar - New Position For The Toolbar That Sits At The Top Of The Screen

Mar 30, 2011

I have been working for the last three months with Ubuntu 10 on a destop. Doing just fine and loving it. I decided to try a new position for the toolbar that sits at the top of the screen. I did a right click and moved it to the right side of the scree, didn't like the look of that. Right click on the bar and moved it to the left, didn't like that either, so moved it to the bottom. having done all that I thought I could put it back at the top but alas, I can not right click on the Toolbar.

It seems as though the two bars are fighting each other at the bottom of the screen.I would like to go back to the default position at the top of the screen. I do have a terminal window available to me on the desktop so if I could find out the command line to type in, I should be able to reset my tool bar. Being new I have no idea what this command would be.

Ubuntu / Apple :: IBook Screen Just Goes Off Unexpectedly - Fix This?

May 23, 2010

I have been running Ubuntu in my iBook/g4 800, 12' inch screen since jaunty and I must confess that I have had a fair share of graphics issue, however, since karmic, my computer would just go off especially when the AC is disconnected then on plugging back the AC, it comes back on but with the windows or the previous items on the screen completely deformed, that kind of deformation you would only blame graphics for. So the deformation stays for long and a reboot is all I'm left with. While still in karmic, i thought an upgrade to Lucid would get things back in place but that never happened, so I have been wondering what to do. I thought of a key combination that would turn on the screen in an iBook but I cant seem to find that through google, so I'm left with just fixing the underlying issue which according to some post on the Internet, wrong graphics settings might cause the monitor to shut down unexpectedly. I don't know exactly what exactly am I supposed to do? If that post is anything to go by, here is my xorg.conf(I know karmic+ does not need this but my system needs it) code...

Ubuntu / Apple :: No Dual Boot - Cannot Get To A Log In Screen

Apr 29, 2011

I have a Macbook Pro, with ubuntu as the ONLY OS, there is no dual boot. I bought the mac long ago and recently got fed up with OS X, so i removed it for unbutu. i've been having random troubles with it but have for the most part been able to figure it out by reading forums however, my computer will not boot now.

From power off:
Push power button
Screen becomes grey for about twenty seconds
screen becomes black
sometimes flashes the underscore in the top right corner once
screen goes black
no change thereafter

I was playing Warcraft 3 (running on WINE) when I left it, the CD is still in the disk drive. I cannot eject it, I can not get to a log in screen, I can't do anything. Nothing I have attempted has affect the computer what so ever, except the power button as far as I can tell.

So far I've tried changing the brightness manually in terminal and in power-management, editing the grub file and also reinstalling compiz, all to no avail. Trying to alter brightness using the fn keys displays the brightness panel in the top right, and it decreases in value as it should, but the screen stays bright.
