It happens before,put normally it'll disappear after several second, As the title said, every time I execute "xrandr -o right" ,the screen rotates but the top half turns to a black screen.I click the unity and it can appear on the area,the cursor appears too. I was't sure if the problem was caused by natty or not,so let's find out.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.
This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors.Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though.Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an old Compaq desktop, and after working on it for a while, screen randomly turns blank, usually with flashing horizontal white lines. Can anyone help? Someone already told me to try memtest, which I already performed, but nothing happened.

I tried it a few months ago with my HP... a live system worked fine, but when I installed it, it would go blank after the splash screen. I assumed it was some sort of incompatible graphics driver and gave up since I don't know enough about Ubuntu yet.Now I have a spare Dell XPS desktop sitting around and I got the latest version of Ubuntu Studio and tried it again. The install goes by erfectly, this time the welcome screen actually comes up and I can see my username. As soon as I hit enter, which I imagine should bring up the password prompt, the entire screen goes black and won't respond to anything.

I see black color trough half of my display. I can go blindly in upper section without being able to see, and from time to time click the shut down bottom. Do you any of you have idea how to fix it? This year i bought a new Sony Vaio VPCS12M9E preinstalled with windows 7 pro, but i liked the idea of having the opportunity of chosing between windows and ubuntu, so i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO-image to a disc, and restarted my laptop just as i did when i installed it on my old laptop. The problem is that when i boot the disc after restarting the computer, the screen just turns black. What can i do to install Ubuntu?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.
I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. Now when I start the computer and select Ubuntu from GRUB, I get this:

I don't seem to have an "xorg.conf" file.
Gateway SB400a computer with Edubuntu Lucid installed. The problem first cropped up when I installed the Edubuntu packages on Ubuntu. I did a fresh install with Edubuntu and the problem persists. I don't want to go back to Ubuntu since this computer is for my Grandkids and I want to the Edubuntu stuff for them.
I don't have the specs handy, but I can get them. what I have to do to get them. (it happens when you get old)

I had 11.3 running for quite some time without any problem. The upgrade to 11.4 was ruined for some reason (only got commandprompt login) and the message that Xorg.0.log couldn't be copied. Decided to install 11.4 from scratch, but since the install my screen flashes every 20 seconds or so to black screen and and after 1 second back to normal. There is no interruption of any other task like typing. Card: FeForce FX5200 card. Can someone please point me to a solution? Also, my monitor (Philips 150S) is not recognized. How can I change that without changing xorg.conf by hand?

This situation appears about 90% tries. After 7 reboots I installed Suse successful but the problem appears also now. Just after select Suse in GRUB, the screen print some text about half a second and it goes black. Sometime I can start system normal. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI wanted to get rid of ubuntu splash screen, and edited the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text". Now it won't load at all. It nust shows the same purple background without ubuntu logo, then turns black and shows few lines of text. After displaying "Checking battery state... [OK]", it freezes and does not move further. I can't even.start a recovery mode because I have no dual boot and do not get this opfion at the start.

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

The last thing I am trying to adjust is such a simple thing, but I just can't seem to get it. In Ubuntu, the screen position is shifted to the right, covering the scroll bar of windows and the trash can.
No problem, just use xvidtune, adjust the screen as I want and create a custom modeline right? Well, it does not seem to work.Here is what I did:Using xrandr I created a --newmode and then used --addmode to add it to the output I am using (default):

Notice how the new mode now lacks the rest of the config information specified in the --newmode above, not sure if this is normal.I can change to the new mode, and the resolution is correct, but the screen is still not adjusted. There is no difference switching between the 1680x1050 and the 1680x1050_new modes - the screen may flash, but the position does not change.
(I also tried adding a mode line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf screen section, but it also has no effect. Actually, there was no xorg.conf existing at all, so I created a minimal one.)It is really annoying to have to adjust the screen position using the monitor controls on every reboot.
I have been arguing with my acer aspire one laptop since I bought it in terms of the screen resolution and have never been able to solve the problem, although I seem to be getting close. I just updated to 10.04 (the netbook remix).I have been following the instructions for how to fix it here. The result was this:

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I'm not sure which veraion of linux I have but it was the latest veraon bfor the recent update. I accidentally hit alt ctrl f11 and my comp went inyo the grub menu. I've tried startx and it does nothing. About half the commands I enter do nothing and the other half r not found or are incorrect. The only vommand thw actualley work is reboot. I searched for this and read a grub guide but it did no good.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just found some strange behaviour with xrandr. I've got a dual screen setup (both 1680x1050) on which I want to span my desktop. I'm using the ati (amd) proprietary driver from livna to do this. I edited my xorg.conf to include the 'Virtual' line under screen.
When I add this to the "Screen" section:
The driver breaks and I get a resolution of 1400x900 and still not the option to span my desktop.
When I change that to read Virtual 1680 2100
It all works fine but I have to have my desktops on top of each other.
I believe it might have to do with dpms (according to KiPi on the #debian-boot chatroom) but I'm not entirely sure why my monitors keep turning off 10 minutes into the installation. I have tried using Live CD and a netinst version of the Debian 8.2 installation methods.
I'm going to try to disable dpms in the Live CD and hopefully that works.
Firefox 5.0 turns my screen gray, ties up the CPU in a loop, and turns the disc access LED on. Itś FF 5.0 running on 11.04.

Both screens are detected and there is no problem when they are cloned, but if I want to have one screen right of the other (using the command xrandr --output VGA1 --right-of HDMA1, as the KDE settings manager never managed to have any effect), the right screen is shifted ca. 100 pixels to the left and on the right side of it I see the left side of the left screen.t seems both screens are detected if I type XRandR:

Then after screen starts again, my desktop looks like it lost color depth. I can see wallpaper that consists of big blocks of color tones instead of being smooth. Temporary I had to disable blank screen during inactivity in Power management settings. I have installed:
