I recently switched my os to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Netbook Edition. After installing, I noticed that I am unable to adjust the brightness of my screen. The Fn keys do not work and I cannot find any other way to adjust it.The only way I have been able to adjust it is at the BIOS with Fn keys.

I've tried editing /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to change the current setting from 20 to 100, but I can't save it, even when logged in as su, it returns "Invalid Argument" when I try to enter the filename of where to save. What do I do?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Toshiba netbook NB 255. As you know there is no CD drive so I have to boot from a usb flash drive. I follow all of the instructions on the Ubuntu web site to get the .iso onto the flash drive using pendrivelinux.com and the universal usb installer. However for some reason whenever I try to boot from any usb drive on my netbook I am getting an error saying "graphics initialization failed Error in setting up gfxboot" and on the next line down it says "boot:" and the flashing cursor. I consider myself a generally tech savvy person but this is a problem that I have never encountered.
I really prefer Ubuntu on my netbook rather than whatever garbage windows version the manufacturer put on the netbook.
I have tried every forum that exists, but I have been sadly frustrated in setting up this netbook's headphone jack and internal microphone to work. Basically the speakers work fine, but as soon as I plug in headphones nothing happens, then I unplug the headphones and the speakers work fine. I tried adding the following two lines to the /etc/modprob.d/alsa-base.conf options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro enable=1 index=0 one of the other forums told me to do this, but no luck.Also I tried this too: [URL]...

View 9 Replies View Relatedi got an AOC 18" lcd, the instructions that came with it, are only for Windows and Macs, if i press a button at the base of it, a square appears with all the pictures to configure including brightness, but i can't click on the screen. The cd that came with the monitor, i assume only works with Windows/Mac, i haven't inserted it for fear of screwing up.
PS: when i pass the mouse over the square, the pointer disappears.
I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
I am running a dual boot conifg with OSX and Ubuntu PPC (karmic) on a 2004 G5 and everything is working pretty well - very well actually. The last thing I am trying to adjust is such a simple thing, but I just can't seem to get it. In Ubuntu, the screen position is shifted to the right, covering the scroll bar of windows and the trash can.
No problem, just use xvidtune, adjust the screen as I want and create a custom modeline right? Well, it does not seem to work.Here is what I did:Using xrandr I created a --newmode and then used --addmode to add it to the output I am using (default):

Notice how the new mode now lacks the rest of the config information specified in the --newmode above, not sure if this is normal.I can change to the new mode, and the resolution is correct, but the screen is still not adjusted. There is no difference switching between the 1680x1050 and the 1680x1050_new modes - the screen may flash, but the position does not change.
(I also tried adding a mode line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf screen section, but it also has no effect. Actually, there was no xorg.conf existing at all, so I created a minimal one.)It is really annoying to have to adjust the screen position using the monitor controls on every reboot.
I just booted ubuntu from a disk that I burned to try and salvage some files off a hard drive with a failed boot sector (maybe. not sure what the problem is,). Anyway, I can see the files, and I have a large portable hard drive that I can use (a MyPassport 320gig, if I recall correctly). I'm having trouble accessing the drive, and I think it might be because there's something popping up in the task bar that I can't see. Unfortunately, I can't see the task bar! My screen's resolution is off, and I'm having trouble adjusting it. I browsed the various settings and I couldn't figure out any way to change it.
Is there anything I can do? EDIT: Oops! I didn't look into the Monitors options... how embarrassing.
EDIT2: Okay, looks like I can mess about with the resolutions, but all of them still deny me access to the full screen - still can't see the task bar.
I cannot adjust the screen brightness in the power management menu. I can access the window and move the scroll bar, but there is no change.
I am on v 10.04 32bit , a Benq joybook s35.
It was working just fine on the previous version of ubuntu.
My computer (Samsung R580 N330M)seems doesnot adjust brightness both power manager and configuration file in /proc, I tried NVIDIA setting and it works,but I think it changes the color,not LCD. is it caused by driver problems?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 just randomly while adjusting the brightness using the shortcut key commands on my laptop the brightness started to glitch between two brightness levels. If I don't use the shortcut keys it doesn't glitch unless I shut the screen or restart the computer. So I've had to put up with this for the past couple months now and I think that it might even drive me to reinstall but then I lose all my data.

And no, not the gnome power manager dimming the screen when idle, I'm talking about it suddenly going from dimmest to brightest when I haven't even touched the screen brightness buttons in the last few minutes.
what package would I file this bug against)? This is Maverick on a thinkpad T60, and I can provide any other information that people find relevant. On what may be a related note, it seems that one push of the screen brightness up or down buttons causes two increments in brightness.
I originally installed Maverick on my Macbook 5.1 using rEFIt to dual boot. For some reason, after installing Compiz my screen brightness functionality stopped working. It was permanently 100%. I thought that upgrading to Natty might work, but no luck. So far I've tried changing the brightness manually in terminal and in power-management, editing the grub file and also reinstalling compiz, all to no avail. Trying to alter brightness using the fn keys displays the brightness panel in the top right, and it decreases in value as it should, but the screen stays bright. The brightness settings work fine when I boot to Mac.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.
I'm having trouble locating a way to adjust the screen brightness on fc10... It is only possible to use the monitor's control for now.Yeah my monitor make an annoying whining noise unless you turn it on 100% brightness, but that hurts my eyes.It is so crazy that they didn't put a brightness control in! View 4 Replies View RelatedMy issue is like this: I have a laptop (dell vostro 1400, NVidia 8400M video card) running Fedora 12 up to date. My desktop is KDE 4. I usually run the laptop connected to the power outlet, so my power profile is set to "performance". This power profile sets the screen brightness to the maximum. However, when I'm in the dark, I want to lower the screen brightness. The shortcut keys work, and the screen brightness is lowered. However, for some reason, after about 30 seconds it resets itself to the highest brightness setting. No matter how I set the brightness, it will always reset itself. Any ideas what can i do to correct this?

After initial power on the keyboard selection of "Windows Key" + F4 will dim the screen and the "Windows Key" + F5 will brighten the screen. When being used, either combination will also show a meter on the screen to display the adjustment of the brightness. When the lid is closed the computer is set to suspend by default. After the computer is brought back from suspend the keyboard short cuts no longer control the brightness and the meter does not appear on the screen. I have not found any other way to control the brightness and I have to restart to get the keyboard short cuts to work again.

I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?

Nothing worked.For most or many people, some of the suggestions will work fine. For those of you who can't get them to work and are stuck with Ubuntu 10.04 on the NC20 with a dimmed-out screen, I have a quick workaround:
When you boot and get to the BIOS password prompt, use the function and up-down array keys to control the brightness there. The screen brightness will be carried through to Ubuntu. You might be able to do this at the GRUB prompt. The point is that the BIOS handles the screen brightness before Ubuntu, so it just works.
I ran Kubuntu 10.4 from the Live CD and from the start The screen was automatically set to be as dim as possible, but in the power manager the brightness is set to be as bright as possible. Moving around the slider doesn't do nothing, and when I click the battery icon in the tray, it shows another brightness slider that's set to dim as possible, when I move it around it has no effect and just goes back to where it was when I close the popup window. Right now I'm running from the livedisk on an IBM T42 thinkpad laptop.How do I fix this, is it a hardware issue, I've had problems with my graphics card in the past with compositing in X/Ubuntu.I've found some text files for the backlight, they're all set to 0 which I believe is the problem, however even though I'm running the File Manager as root with kdesudo and the permissions are set to read and write for the owner, who is root, I can't save any changes.

When I reset my settings, nothing happens. And I notice this usually happens after I have put the laptop in suspend mode.
