I have Fedora 15 gnome 3 installed on my new laptop. When my system runs on battery my power management keeps changing my screen brightness. It keeps dimming my backlight. In the GUI of Power Management I cant find any option to change this setting. How can I do that through Command Line

I've tried editing /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to change the current setting from 20 to 100, but I can't save it, even when logged in as su, it returns "Invalid Argument" when I try to enter the filename of where to save. What do I do?

The Fn keys do not work and I cannot find any other way to adjust it.The only way I have been able to adjust it is at the BIOS with Fn keys.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an issue where the screen on my laptop will not shut off with the power management tool. The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.
Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present
i got an AOC 18" lcd, the instructions that came with it, are only for Windows and Macs, if i press a button at the base of it, a square appears with all the pictures to configure including brightness, but i can't click on the screen. The cd that came with the monitor, i assume only works with Windows/Mac, i haven't inserted it for fear of screwing up.
PS: when i pass the mouse over the square, the pointer disappears.
I Install Ubuntu 9.10 and I can't control Brightness, show brightness popup (Fn+F5F6) but screen brightness don't work, I install NVIDIA Driver Linux-x86_64 version 190.53, modiffed xorg.conf.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOn a fresh install of Debian 8 with XFCE (with a NVIDIA GeForce 210 according to lspci, and a P7P55D Asus mainboard), I just added a second monitor. This second monitor does not switches off even though the first one does due to the Screensaver Preferences → Advanced → Off After 3 minutes.
The new screen is a HP Pavilion 25xw plugged in using a HDMI cord.
The old screen is a Philips 190S plugged in using a VGA cord.
The new screen (HP on HDMI) only goes blank when the old one (Philips VGA) turns off.
Two tests:
- on the same machine, I also have Windows XP: both screens turns off at the same time with the power management.
- I tried on Debian: Code: Select allsleep 5 && xrandr --output HDMI-1 –off
It turns off the second monitor, so I know that it is possible to turn it off from my Debian.
How to set up the system so that both monitors power off when the machine is not used?
I am a brand new user coming from the MS environment. My impression of openSUSE is that it is like moving into a new house that is well built but the rooms are full of half-constructed self-assembly furniture and appliances without any specific instructions. My latest problem is that I have created a screensaver via the "Configure Desktop" application and set "Enable display power management" and set some timeouts.However, I seem to be asked for a password to unlock the screen when I come back to my computer. I have spent 2 hours trying to find the place where I can disable screen password locking but to no avail. I am perplexed and frustrated at how such an obvious function is so ****ed hard to configure. This is the impression I am getting of Linux in general - it is novice user-hostile and badly organised.
I run V11.1 on a minimalised install on a stick with TWM, no KDE at all but I cant get rid of the screen shutdown after about 20 minutes. Also I have several other boxes with v11.1 with KDE and still cant get rid of these screen shut downs.I dont believe this is coming from the bios in these machines. they are all Intel D945 MBs with some sort of Nvidea cards.
My app normal runs with no user mouse or input and is pocessor intensive.I would like to retain the power shutdown and reboot capability from comand line.I realise its not as simple as pulling symlinks of of the init levels in the new complicated distros, but I was suprised the non kde twm install still shuts down the screen.So I want a low level level fix that will remove anything kicked off by init that will derate the system performance or turn off the screen.
I have recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 which runs perfectly, except for the power management system.I go into the GUI power management screen and tell it to use the screen-saver after ten minutes, but NEVER suspend/ hibernate but it suspends/hibernates anyway,sometimes after an hour, sometimes hours later.Is it possible to keep the screen-saver but disable the rest of the power management system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure this belongs in this forum as opposed to the hardware forum, but I do not beleive this is a hardware issue.I want to stop the scrren from blanking and going to power save. I'm running 5.3_x86-64 and I'm using the nVidia drivers direct from nVidia called NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-96.43.13-pkg2.run.
So far, I'm added DPMS off in /etc/xorg.conf, removed all the screensaver packages and all the power management packagesbut the screen is still going blank after a time of inactivity.What else do I need to do? I can not allow the screen to go blank, there should be no screensaver or power management and the machine should stay in a completely awake and ready-to-use state at all times.

View 4 Replies View Relatedit doesn't do anything critically wrong.it shuts down, starts up, suspends, restarts, etc, rather well.only thing is that, altho' I set the settings to never hibernate and to never put the display to sleep, it does. I't's annoying, since I can't whatch a movie in peace, for instance.

Some times in the middle of watching a dvd (after about 10 mins when it is set to 1 hour).Could this be done by terminal, perhaps there is a problem between entering in the GUI and actually telling the machine.

For example, when pressing the power button, there is just a 'Cancel' button (no button for shut down, suspend, hibernate), in Gnome menu there is no possibility to shut down, and in 'gnome-power-preferences' most options do not work at all. For example, there is no other option than 'Blank screen' for 'When laptop lid is closed' action. When starting 'gnome-power-preferences' with '--verbose' parameter, I get following error messages:

Are there any F15 users out there that use Power Management?
I'd like my laptop to run when the lid is closed instead of going to sleep and stop the hard drive from spinning down, because it's got hardware encryption on it and it doesn't like to sleep and then be woken up. In fact, I'd like to completely avoid any kind of sleep.
It looks like Fedora 15 is quite fancy but missing a lot of basic features that even Fedora 14 and earlier had (unless I'm somehow unable to find these features in an obvious place). If I can't figure out how to do power management I'll have to upgrade back to F14.
I just upgraded from FC10 to FC11 (32-bit) on an old Dell laptop. I set my power management settings (in Gnome) to turn the monitor off after some idle period but always leave the computer running and the hard drives powered. I also set my screen saver to a blank screen. I noticed that the screen saver does come on (turning the screen black), but the monitor back lighting never goes off. I tried different idle times for the power management settings (I usually set it to 1 min, but some other posts implied that 11 mins might work). I should also mention that this is after I've logged into a user account, not sitting at the login screen.
I didn't have this problem in FC10 (the monitor would actually turn off) so I figured it was a bug in FC11, but I can't seem to find a thread addressing this issue. I've found some what similar threads, but none mentioning this particular problem.
I have searched for a solution to this issue (it's difficult to come up with a minimum number of search terms) and have found at least one person reporting it, but the solution is "check the xorg logfile" - which is entirely too vague, since I don't know what I'm looking for in the file. Here's the issue: The screensaver and/or power management appears to initiate a logout when I try to awaken the computer, whether the screensaver is still functioning or the screen has been turned off. Wither way, I jiggle the mouse, and it appears there is a crash (black screen with spinning mouse circle) resulting in a new login screen, which is entirely disruptive if I have software running, such as recording an audio stream with Audacity.
I'm using KDE with an OpenGL screensaver (antinspect) set to engage after 10 minutes. As for power settings, I am "letting powerdevil manage screen power saving." On the screen tab I have checked "Dim display when idle for more than [10] minutes." I have enabled display power management - standby after 20 minutes and power off after 30 minutes. (There are way too many options under KDE now, and I don't find an explanation of what the various "Profile Management" options do and what the tabs for "Actions" and "CPU and System" do differently from the "Screen" tab. I have an ATI 4650 video adapter. I'm not using a proprietary driver, since I've not been able to determine that there is one that will work with Fedora 14 (or any other Fedora, for that matter). The machine is a recent AMD (dual core 6000+) with 4Gb of memory.
I'm trying to enable power management on my ATI Radeon HD 3650 video card (GPU: ATI RV635; see my Smolt profile). I'm using the open-source radeon driver (xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.14.1-1.20110504gita6d2dba6.fc15).I've followed the instructions found on the Arch Linux Wiki.In order to verify if power management really works, I've tried to enable the "low" power profile through these commands:

I can't find any proper power management options on Fedora 15, only really basic simple options under the Advanced tab of the Screensaver.Where can I change the Power Management settings in F15?I'd like to set it so that
- screen powers down on closing the lid only, else never powers down / or after a certain time.
- the machine never powers down, either on AC or on battery.
- screen dims on battery after some time, but no on AC.
- hard drive never powers down.
I previously used Fedora 14 and earlier version on my laptops, and could easily set these power management either through the Screensaver, or directly from another menu.Also, I enabled the "Blank Screen Only" mode in the Screensaver, and disabled the "Lock Screen After", but it still asks for a password after some time. How can I stop that?
I just upgraded to f15 x86_64. I use a VPCCEB3Z1E vaio laptop and I noticed that my laptop can't last more than half past an hour running from battery in wireless productivity (just surfing the net and make some word processing, so nothing so heavy...) I use kde 4, installed cpupowerutils (replacement for cpufrequtils), put the modules acpi_cpufreq, cpufreq-ondemand -powersave and the other governors in /etc/rc.d/rc.local for loading them at boot. Edited profiles in powerdevil (every profile has cpupowerutils freq-set -g and the name of a governor) but i still notice no changes. How I can get a better power management on this laptop? Fan still runs at high speed.

I could use power conservatively, and performance would suffer a bit, but longer batt life,or I could have it automatically detect, or I could have the apps use all the power they want and then some. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
