After this update I am unable to Suspend. The screen goes black, the harddisk spins, the moon blinks a couple of time and then I'm presented with the Lock Screen.
I have:
Kernel Linux 2.6.35-25-generic-pae
3.6 Gib of Memory
Availabe disk space of 75.6 GB
I'm a linux newbie so be gentle please. I'm on Lucid Lynx. Last night, the update manager installed updates to the linux kernel header. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it was one of the more important updates as it required a reboot.
This morning, my machine would not boot. After getting past the loading screen, my laptop hangs on a black screen. It was working flawlessly before yesterday. I can boot into recovery mode which appears identical to the regular mode, which works fine and is what I've been using. Also, I used a custom bootscreen, but it seems to have reverted to the default one that comes with the Lucid Lynx install.
Just did an auto update. Among the list of things was an SSL update and now I can no longer connect to my MSN account in Pidgeon. I get an error "unable to validate certificate, the certificate for Omega.contacts.msn.com could not be validated. The certificate chain present is invalid."

However, when I select windows as the os from the boot menu, i get a black screen with a white cursor in the top left corner.
On my ageing laptop with Intel IPW3945 wireless adapter which has always worked extremely well.... Fedora 13 with the latest NetworkManager. Seems that wireless speed has slowed to a crawl.

After the latest update of Debian Wheezy, about three days ago, one of my machines won't boot anymore. The update was done by:

apt-get -y autoremove
I get the error message: "Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/71c... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"
The dir /dev/disk contains only "by-id" and "by-path".
I booted with the rescue system, dropped into a shell and recreated the ramdisk with

But without success. On another machine the update went flawlessly.
I did the latest update on the opensuse 11.4 other day and since then my USB drive is not mounting. initially I thought its gone because my son dropped on the floor. But then when I plugged it to Windows 7 machine it mounted then I plugged it into another Ubuntu 10.10 machine it mounted so I figured out the there is some issue in the latest update. I have all the VMs in this drive and my main laptop is with OpenSuse 11.4
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn my HP i7 based laptop the latest kernel 2.6.33-147 and possibly Nouveau/X.org seems to have broken suspend. ie If the laptop is suspended then when woke, the screen is dead and networking does not work and I cannot change to a different console.If I boot the previous kernel this behaviour does not occur.

Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

I am running 11.04. After an update about a week and a half ago, the time to wake from suspend increased from about 3 seconds to well over 40 seconds. It now, sometimes, takes me longer to wake from suspend than a normal boot takes. Has anyone else encountered this problem/found a fix or workaround?

View 9 Replies View RelatedCreating a new thread for the specific chipset. Laptop is an Acer 5534 with the Atheros chipset. Normally uses the Ath9k driver. To get it to work originally I had to download, compile and install the latest compat_wireless drivers. See post here: {URL] I did the update that came through today and after the reboot there was no wireless internet. It alternates between reboots between having no wireless networks at all detected to never connection to the [AUTO] network previously defined. To fix the problem, I downloaded the latest compat_wireless, compat-wireless-2009-12-11.tar.bz2, and followed the same procedure. I did not do a make clean. To solve the problem temporarily, I edited the grub config and set default to 2 instead of 0 (1 would be 0 in recovery mode).

Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS: * the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", * and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? * If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I have installed 'acpi-support' and 'hibernate 1.99-1.1'. But I don't know how to use these methods to suspend or hibernate my OS. Are they by commands in terminate, or can they be called by clicking Suspend or Hibernate in Startup options of the OS? For example, I type the hibernation command and it shows something is missing although I have installed "tuxonice-userui" ( I don't know if it will provide Tuxonice binary signature file):

I just updated my kernel to the latest version (2.6.35-24). Now my suspend function on my Thinkpad SL510 no longer works. The system simply hangs with a solid cursor in the corner of a black screen. USB devices remain powered on, HDD keeps spinning, and all indicator lights remain lit. When this happens, the only thing I can do is hold the power button down for a hard power off.My first thought would be to troubleshoot this with dmesg, but I don't know how to record dmesg after a power off. The message buffer is reset when I reboot.

When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

I have a Compaq Presario r3300 with a 1.6 GHz processor from AMD and 2GHz ram. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 which has been religiously updated ever since I clean installed it on this computer. Today, about an hour after my last automatic update for Ubuntu 9.10, I went to click one of my mouse buttons, and nothing worked. This happened after I tried to open GIMP 2.6, which had never failed before. So there I was with no right or left click on my mouse or keypad, no any opening of GIMP. Things were frozen - but typing was okay. The cursor ended up in a window, and I could type. I waited for about 10 minutes, then turned off the computer with my power button. When I turned it on, I was able to open up a firefox and left click once. Then everything froze. I turned off, then turned on again. Same situation. One left click, then no reaction. Finally by chance when I was booting up again, the boot screen offering choices (which I don't know how to get to if I want to) came up, and I chose a different, earlier version of Ubuntu. Now I can click my mouse left or right. But still no GIMP. It is installed; just no reaction when I try to run the program as I have literally hundreds of times before. All started with the automatic update earlier this evening.
