Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot After Latest Kernal Update?

Jun 6, 2010

I'm a linux newbie so be gentle please. I'm on Lucid Lynx. Last night, the update manager installed updates to the linux kernel header. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it was one of the more important updates as it required a reboot.

This morning, my machine would not boot. After getting past the loading screen, my laptop hangs on a black screen. It was working flawlessly before yesterday. I can boot into recovery mode which appears identical to the regular mode, which works fine and is what I've been using. Also, I used a custom bootscreen, but it seems to have reverted to the default one that comes with the Lucid Lynx install.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Doesn't Boot With The Latest Kernal?

Apr 29, 2010

After I upgraded from 9.10, I restarted and waited. ubuntu boot screen froze after a little bit, and the my caplock and scrolllock started flashing (I believe this is the kernel panicking) Then I tried safe mode and it did the same thing when is was saying something about sensors. So I then went to grub and started it with an old kernel and it booted fine (without the splash screen though) what should I do?

EDIT: ok the kernel version it is not working with is version 2.6.32-21 and it does work in 2.6.31-21. Also, it now doesn't say anything about sensors. It panics after App-armor loads ans skips Firefox's profile (or something like that)

Debian :: Unable To Boot After Latest Update Of Wheezy Amd64

Jun 21, 2015

After the latest update of Debian Wheezy, about three days ago, one of my machines won't boot anymore. The update was done by:

Code: Select all/usr/sbin/update-smart-drivedb
apt-get update
apt-get -y upgrade
apt-get -y autoremove

I get the error message: "Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/71c... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"

The dir /dev/disk contains only "by-id" and "by-path".

I booted with the rescue system, dropped into a shell and recreated the ramdisk with

Code: Select alldpkg-reconfigure linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc

But without success. On another machine the update went flawlessly.

Fedora :: Latest Update Prevents F11 Boot

Aug 7, 2009

It seems today's kernel update has given a few people some difficulty - but my symptoms seem pretty unique.

* I go through GRUB normally. I 'esc' out of plymouth, and watch my services start. I get message 'mdadm: No arrays found in config file'. Don't remember seeing this before, don't have any RAID devices.

* Next, my file-system gets re-mounted in read-write mode (don't know if this is normal or not). Then, my services begin to start-up. My last service is 'crond'. All services start normally. When it gets to 'crond' the [OK] status is never reported. Visually, the screen flickers a few times, stops, then nothing happens. I can type characters though, and they do show up.

* If I then shutdown my computer by pressing the power button, the shutdown procedure begins. 'crond' shuts down successfully (indicating it started just fine), and the computer goes down normally.

* I don't believe this is an NVIDIA issue. I rescue-moded and changed my XORG.conf to the basic VESA driver to eliminate this possibility.

* Worst of all -- No older kernels work now either. They behave in the same way. When I try to boot to other run-levels, no luck either. This tempts me to think the problem might be file-system related and the re-generation of grub.conf threw something off?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot Into Latest Release?

Sep 5, 2010

I have a dual-boot system (Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04) both 64-bit running on an HP pavilion laptop. I installed this dual-boot system only a few months ago and have continually added some new packages and updates with very few problems. However, now something has happened that really baffles me --- An error in the bootup process that I have never seen before and one that I have been unable to solve.

The problem I had been doing some programming (in Python) and after having the laptop on for several hours, I did a graceful shut down. Then, the next morning I turned on my laptop and the following is what happened:

[Code]...

I have tried the recommendation in B. to use 'chkdsk /r' in Windows. This took about 3 hours and had no effect on the error message. I also had made backups using "Back in time" which I tried (at least some of the directories) but none of these recovered directories had any noticeable effect on the error. This seems to be some basic device mounting problem that for some reason occurs only with the latest release and was triggered by some unknown event

Red Hat / Fedora :: Boot Failure After Latest Kernel Update (12)?

Mar 14, 2010

Dual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -

I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.

Ubuntu :: Kernal Panic On Boot

Nov 20, 2010

So I just installed the new linux kernel ( version 26) . On reboot there is a kernel panic with something like not able to mount root fs on 0,0. The older kernel works fine though. And btw while installing the kernel it did complain about not sufficiant space in /boot. I have got this message earlier, so I removed one of the oldest kernels. and i recently there has been package failure during installation of other packages. And one last thing, i noted that during the removal of the older kernel, there were lines in the terminal suggesting that kernel-26 had not been configured properly, so it tried to configure kernel-25 which also apparently failed.

Ubuntu :: Screen Reads 1.414518 Kernal Panic-not Syncing: Vfs: Unable To Mount Root Fs On Unknown - Block (8,2)

Mar 23, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu now for 4 years and apart from getting the wireless card working on this laptop it has worked perfectly until now. I just loaded the updates and now problems, after switching on and selecting Ubuntu the next screen gives options

2.6.31-20 generic
2.6.31-20 recovery mode
down to
2.6.31-16 generic

if I hit return or let 20 load the next screen reads 1.414518 Kernal panic-not syncing :vfs : unable to mount root fs on unknown - block (8,2) Caps light starts flashing and only way out is to power down. If I select 20 recovery I get a screen full of info and then caps light flashing and only way out is the power button, if I select 19 it loads and works as normal. Is there a simple way to get it auto loading again as the rest of the family use this and are now Ubuntu converts and will not realise whats going on and will reluctantly load up windows.......

Fedora Installation :: Kernal Panic - Not Synching - VFS - Unable To Mount Root Fs On Unknown Block - 0,0

Aug 14, 2009

I've got the following system:

Quote:

I've been having problems with the system ever since I replaced the motherboard. Moving slow and just generally acting 'wonky.' Well the other day I reached my frustration limit and wiped the HDD. Up to this point the HDD had been in 2 partitions, one for the DELL diagnostics and one for the OS, XP Pro.

I decided that I wanted to set up the system in a dual-boot during the rebuild so I created a two partitions using the Windows install. Partition one is the DELL Diagnostic partition, partition 2 is the XP Pro partition and partition 3 is to be the Linux partition. All seemed to go well with the Windows install. I got the OS up and running and got all the updates done and drivers installed.

I only have the one HDD in the system so I was going to have to make this dual-boot off of one HDD.

I had previously, within the past week or two, downloaded the .iso and created the disk for FC11.

I went through the install process and successfully installed Linux on the 3rd partition, or so I thought. When I attempted to boot into Linux I got the Kernal Panic error.

My grub file as it exists now is:

Code:

If I leave the file as is, I get the kernal panic error but the splash image works fine. If I try to change the 'splash image' and 'root' references from '(hd0,2),' then neither works.

I can boot into Windows XP from the setup as it is now.

I if I boot using my LoaS (FC 11 made at the same time as the images for the cds were downloaded) I can see the hdd and multiple partitions. There seems to be a 'boot' partion, the Linux OS partition, a swap partion, as well as the Dell and XP partions. Now I've tried changing the references in the grub file to reflect the different partitions, basically I've tried 2, 3, 4 and 5, everything but 0 (the dell diagnostics) and 1 (the XP Pro).

I've also re-wiped the HDD and started the whole process over from scratch, thinking maybe I'd hosed something up the first time, but being a firm believer in 'Always do what you've always done and you'll always get what you've always gotten,' and that one of the definitions of insanity it keep performing the same actions over and over and expect different results, I seem to be at impasse here.

Results from 'sfdisk -l'
