Ubuntu :: Wake From Suspend Time Increased After Update?

Jul 22, 2011

I am running 11.04. After an update about a week and a half ago, the time to wake from suspend increased from about 3 seconds to well over 40 seconds. It now, sometimes, takes me longer to wake from suspend than a normal boot takes. Has anyone else encountered this problem/found a fix or workaround?

Ubuntu :: Won't Wake Up From Suspend?

Ubuntu :: Laptop Won't Wake Up From Suspend?

Jan 5, 2010

All I want to do is to be able to shut the lid on my laptop, have it go into suspend like it already does, but upon opening it again, successfully start up again. It'll sleep just fine, but if you close the lid and try to open it again later, the lights will indicate it is starting up, but the screen won't initialize, and I am left with a blank, black screen.I've tried a line of code to enter into my menu.lst file, and it seemed like it should work, but it borked my computer and I had to manually reinstate the line of code it had before.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Very Slow On Wake From Suspend CPU 100%

Nov 30, 2010

My computer runs really well when I first switch on, and usually I'll leave it on all day, and just suspend it when I'm not using it.But since a couple of days ago, it's been playing up after waking from suspend. Everything slows to a crawl, and the system monitor shows the CPU working at 96-100% permanently, even when I'm not doing anything. It's not like I even have many apps open. Generally I'll have a few tabs going on Opera, have Thunderbird open, and Gwibber. I'll open and close gedit and gimp as I need them, and that's about it. Having said that, this new version of Thunderbird seems very slow to me compared with the previous one.

Hardware :: Suspend / Wake And CPU Visualization

Jun 18, 2010

Here is the latest in my saga of me vs. Suspend in Utuntu.

Dell Studio XPS 8000 desktop
i7-860 CPU
8 GB RAM
swap area set to 9 GB (because I was experimenting with hibernate)
nVIdia GeForce GT220 1 GB
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, all patches, nVidia-current 195.36.24

So I was poking around in BIOS and looking at CPU Features. I have also a problem with my VMWare machines sucking up a core or 2 at 100% after suspending and waking the host. Just for the halibut I Disabled CPU Visualization. My VMWare XP guest now starts up a lot faster! (?) and I have discovered. If I do a suspend of the host BEFORE starting and LOGGING IN to a VM it seems to work great. I can wake the host and am presented with the locked screen dialog asking for my password. I have done about 20 suspend/wakes with no problems. So far, so good.

Upon further testing I find that I can start a VMWare or Virtualbox XP guest machine and still suspend/wake - at least so far with a limited number of tries. Most importantly, if I log into the guest (VMWare or Virtualbox) I find that suspend/wake fails 100% of the time. By fail I mean that the host suspends but when I attempt to wake it I find that I am logged out of the host and all programs which were running at suspend time are no longer running. Firefox restores the previous session indicating that it was shut down incorrectly or unexpectedly.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Panic - Fails To Wake Up From Suspend

Apr 21, 2011

I've had this problem two times before and solved it once by following a guide, the other time by formatting. It always happens when it fails to wake up from suspend. Usually I am unable to even mount the drive or access the files. This one is different in that now I can actually access my files for the most part but this comes up on boot. I backed up most of my files (except it still says I don't have permission to access some of them) but I would like to get it back up and running without formatting. If I boot in recovery mode it stops at this. I took a picture but I rewrote some of it here.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 - Incredibly Slow HDD And Boot Time Increased

Mar 30, 2011

My hardware:
AMD Athlon X2 4800+ (2,5 GHz) + 2 GB DDR2 memory
MSI K9N V2 (nforce 520)
SAMSUNG HD250HJ (SATA, 250 GB)

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 with all the released updates are installed. I've got an Windows Xp SP3 on the same hard drive and it's works fine. S.M.A.R.T. says the hdd is 100%. A few days ago I realized that the boot time increased and the hard drive operations takes way too much time. So currently the boot sequence takes 11-14 minutes.

I've already tried to solve this problem but no effect:
1.) cleaned up the root directory to create more free space
2.) plugged the sata cable to another port
3.) changed from AHCI to IDE and reverse in BIOS settings
4.) added ahci, sata_nv into the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file and created a new initrd
5.) searched for problems in the syslog
Just to imagine how slow is currently the system/hdd:

Debian Hardware :: Can't Wake Up From Suspend With Closed Lid

This is how I make it wake up with wireless keyboard:

# echo enabled > /sys/bus/usb/devices/1-2/power/wakeup

I'm using debian jessie. How to make it work when lid is closed?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Wake-up On Lan From Suspend / Sleep?

May 26, 2010

Firstly, wol works fine from shutdown and hibernate; it's just suspend which doesn't work.

I've got 2 types of workstations, all running 11.1. They both have this kernel:
2.6.27.45-0.1-default #1 SMP 2010-02-22 16:49:47 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Type 1 is a dell optiplex 745, bios version 2.4.1. Here's the relevant bit from lspci:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5754 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)
Kernel driver in use: tg3
Kernel modules: tg3

[Code]....

The fact that it's happening across two different machines makes me wonder if it is some OS setting I've missed, but then maybe neither card/driver supports it from suspend.

I'd really like to get them waking from suspend because training users to use suspend rather than hibernate would be a pain. Also, being able to configure such that it only wakes from suspend and not hibernate/shutdown, as implied in the bios, would allow me to wake machines up for backups etc only when the users are here, rather than on holiday/seconded to another department etc.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Devices Involved In Wake From Sleep - Suspend To Memory

Apr 17, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE (upgraded to Tumbleweed but that's not relevant here). The computer is a Dell Optiplex. My sleep (suspend to ram) and wake (restore from ram) work very well. The box can multiboot to windows 7 as well as to Linux.

In Linux, the restore process is triggered by pressing the power button on the front of the case. No other action will bring it awake.

In windows, the restore process is triggered by the power button but also by moving the mouse or touching the Escape key, spacebar etc.

Here's the question: how do I get the computer to wake in Linux by activating a key (or mouse, whatever) instead of just the power button (which is under the desk and hard to get to)?

Ubuntu :: "nice" Causing Increased CPU Time Even In The Absence Of A Load

Sep 10, 2010

I've just noticed that "nicing" long running computationally intensive, I/O unintensive, single-threaded executables on my system increases the CPU run time of those executables (as reported by /usr/bin/time as well as by wall clock) by a factor of 2-3 even in the absence of any load, i.e., "top" tells me that my program is getting 100% of a CPU. For example:

%coot 248: /usr/bin/time -p ./a.out > out
real 97.47
user 85.64

[code]....

My system is running Ubuntu 7.10. If I run the same executable on two other machines I have access to -- one running Fedora 5 and the other Ubuntu 9.10 -- I don't see any discrepancy between the runtimes using nice and not using nice.

This behavior is executable independent, compiler dependent, and language dependent -- I'm seeing it across the board. I'm assuming I've somehow configured my system to behave this way, but I have no idea what I may have done. Also, this was the first time I'd ever done timing runs with "nice" (actually, "at"), so I'm not sure how long my system's been configured (if configured is the right word) this way.

Ubuntu :: Time Changed From GMT To BST - Wake On Alarm Fails / Fix This?

I did this, shut down Ubuntu fine, but its not waking up at all at 22:30, or any other time I set the WOA to. I had this problem a few years ago on an old ASrock mobo and cant remember how I sorted it - maybe by blanking the bios, cant remember.

Ubuntu :: Suspend Logs Out Every Time?

I know it's still running, because I can hear the little drum sound of the login screen loading- it's just not displayed to the screen. ctrl-alt-f8 brings it back, but just the login screen. After logging in - I can see that all my apps have been closed. It's like it brings up the wrong tty (sorry if I'm using the wrong wording). I don't know if it's relevant, but I have it set to log in automatically. This is a bit frustrating- I've done some googling and haven't found any relevant information.

Ubuntu :: Auto Suspend After Certain Amount Of Time?

Feb 8, 2011

Most nights I fall asleep watching tv or movies. I want the computer to go to sleep after I do. Under Power Management Properties I have "put computer to sleep when inactive for 1:00" yes - to " spin down hard disks" and "put display to sleep when inactive for 1:00"

I'd say 65% of the time I wake up and the computer is running, not suspended, and 45% of the time the monitor is still on. Over the past 8 months or so I have been trying different media players. I tend to have the same problem of the computer not sleeping with all of them. (Banshee, Miro, xbmc, boxee, vlc, totem, )

1. Is there a process I can look for that may be running some of the time that would hinder the suspend function?

2. Is there a simple script I can write for "suspend in 90 minutes"

3. I think I remember seeing way to do this from the CLI with pm-suspend, yeah?

Edit- I found this http://bit.ly/hpThVM
Things I tested that didn't work
~$ sudo echo pm-suspend | at 12:27
~$ sudo sleep 30s

Debian :: Squeeze - Freeze Or Kerneloops At Random Time After Suspend

Jun 3, 2010

I'll start at the beginning. The problem i am about to describe occured in ubuntu 9.10 for the first time (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/480850) and is ironically partly responsible for my switching to debian. which i don't regret, but it seems i can't run from the bug any longer because now it's in squeeze, so i want to fix it or make a proper bug report:

Steps to Reproduce:
1: Suspend Laptop to RAM
2: Resume from Suspend
3: Wait and see, preferably monitoring top:
At some random time, ranging from immediately (black screen after resume) to several hours later, the system will become unresponsive. Switching to tty1 or Alt+Print+K does not work, Alt+Print+REISUB does work. Each freeze is anticipated by a random process (this time it was mandb, was installing something) hogging 100% of CPU, then the System becomes gradually unresponsive within a minute or so (panel, metacity, finally mouse cursor freezes too).
Alternatively, in case of a black screen immediately upon resume, Alt+Print+K works (EDIT: or not), and the system remains usable.
Additionally, i don't know if this is related, i noticed one process using 9999% of CPU for a second according to top, just thought i'd mention it.
This bug constitutes a regression, suspend does work flawlessly on this Laptop in Lenny.

The above is how it presented itself at the beginning on a fresh squeeze install, however, after two days of trying, i additionally get kerneloops messages i did not get before (again, after at least one suspend to ram) and after that the system becomes generally unstable (random applications won't properly open or terminate, including nautilus, evolution, iceweasel). Can this be due to secondary damage from the freezes and alt+print+reisubbing repeatedly?

The good news is, apart from this probably already damaged squeeze install, i have another one on one of my playground partitons, where i avoided suspend so far, so i can still try things out there. (it's kde, but i don't think it's related to the desktop environment).
