View 9 RepliesIf you are interested, Java SE 6 Update 24 is available. The Check Java Version link in my signature will tell you if you are up to date or not. The Update Java Version link in my signature will tell you how to obtain and install the latest version. The 32 bit version install directions are on the left side of that page and the 64 bit instructions are on the right side.
Just remember to remove the current version before installing the new one as it says in the instructions. The remove instructions are below the install instructions. Also, in Step 9 - "Now you'll want to tell the system, that there's a new Java version available." See the note below it that says if you get an error upon entering the command once, enter it a second time. I have to do that and sometimes forget. Just thought I would mention that. These instructions are already setup for version 6 update 24, but they can be modified for any update and they will work. I have been using these instructions for a couple of years and they work.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm currently trying to update my Suse 11.1 copy of Linux.
I got some messages that Clamav was not up to date.
I tried to use YUM which I installed on the machine but that did nothing.
It seems that I can only update Clamav by using Klamav.
Whats happening is that the system is telling me that its going to recompile Clamav, starts doing various tasks but doesnt really work.
When I use YUM on my CentOS 5.3 server it simply updates Clamav to the current version and then I use Freshclam to update the virus definitionsdone.
My questions is this; is there anyway to get the latest version of Clamav without going through the that Klamav thing. Klamav seems O.K. for updating the virus definitions but thats all.
Whats wrong with all the Linux software people?
Cant they just get their act together and make their software work. Im also trying to set up a mail server on my Suse 11.1 box but between figuring out how to install Postfix, Dovecot, Cirus-IMAP Im not getting anywhere.
As much as I hate to say this, these things only seem to be rocket science on Linux. I have much less problems installing software on Windoz.
Linux software people need to come up with workable install programs for their software products so more people who arent software experts can make Linux really workable.
There is a new java update for security. I checked my java version here: [URL] and it said I have v. 6.20 installed even after unsuccessful trial to install their linux package following their vague instructions I think I followed well. What do I do?

I downloaded Java into my home folder instead of downloading it in my usr folder because it wouldn't let me(even when I was root user). It is present in my home folder with its own directory, but I am unsure how to use it. I downloaded Java to try to play Minecraft, but when I open then .jar file with the directory nothing happens. The actual directory contains the following
folders:bin, javaws, lib, man, plugin, copyright, licens e,a read me file, thirdpartylicensereadme, and a welcome.html file. I don't like running Minecraft with OpenJDK because it lags tremendously and it won't close, and I heard the "real Java" runs it much better.Did I download it incorrectly, if so can you tell me how?

View 9 Replies View RelatedFirst you'll want to remove the old JRE or openJDK (if you have it). When JRE is installed from the repositories, do it like this: System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager
Query: sun java Tick all installed packages and choose complete removal. When it's installed manually in /opt/java, see the instruction at the bottom of this column (under the header Removal). If you don't have JRE, then you'll probably have openJDK. That one should be completely removed as well. That can also be done with Synaptic Package Manager (query: openjdk).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI browse with Firefox and I had been running a pretty vanilla install of Ubuntu 10.4 (with a few things like tomcat and mysql) I supposed the repos kept everything (like java) up to date.
Some time ago I replaced OpenJDK with SunJDK.
java -version is "1.6.0_24"
which java is /usr/bin/java
Yesterday, for the first time, I downloaded and ran an Avast! scan. It complains of "Malware-gen" in several class files in what I think is the java cache. Does anyone know how this could be?

From what I can see it looks like I need to install Samba before I can share files between my Ubuntu 9.10 and Win7. I went to samba.org and they report the latest version of Samba as 3.4.6. When I searched for Samba in the Ubuntu software center, they report the Samba version as Version: 1.2.63-0ubuntu4 (system-config-samba).
Version 1.2.63 seems really old. Am I missing something? How can I install the latest version of Samba?

View 3 Replies View RelatedTwice now I have received update notices informing me of header upgrades which I installed, both required a restart of the system. Usually when this happens there is an additional item in the grub menu. The last two times this has happened I didn't get an additional menu item. What is the latest stable version? I am currently running:
2.6.32-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20 14:21:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I did try a "sudo update-grub2" and the menu didn't change.
