My windows entry still shows in my grub list on the boot menu The windows partition is still there
However, when I select windows as the os from the boot menu, i get a black screen with a white cursor in the top left corner.

I can't access my grub menu (by pressing space bar on boot) to select a kernel to boot from, and I need to boot into 2.6.31 to fix an intel chip issue. How can I replace the current 2.6.32x kernel with 2.6.31, so it is the ONLY option grub can boot up with?

I'm running 10.10 on a Lenovo x200. I have been running, happily, with 10.10. Yesterday, the update manager installed:
PHP Code:
After this update I am unable to Suspend. The screen goes black, the harddisk spins, the moon blinks a couple of time and then I'm presented with the Lock Screen.
I have:
Kernel Linux 2.6.35-25-generic-pae
3.6 Gib of Memory
Availabe disk space of 75.6 GB

I'm a linux newbie so be gentle please. I'm on Lucid Lynx. Last night, the update manager installed updates to the linux kernel header. I'm not exactly sure what that means but it was one of the more important updates as it required a reboot.
This morning, my machine would not boot. After getting past the loading screen, my laptop hangs on a black screen. It was working flawlessly before yesterday. I can boot into recovery mode which appears identical to the regular mode, which works fine and is what I've been using. Also, I used a custom bootscreen, but it seems to have reverted to the default one that comes with the Lucid Lynx install.

Just did an auto update. Among the list of things was an SSL update and now I can no longer connect to my MSN account in Pidgeon. I get an error "unable to validate certificate, the certificate for Omega.contacts.msn.com could not be validated. The certificate chain present is invalid."

I have duel boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 910. I've just downloaded and installed the latest update for Ubuntu 9.10. After my latest update, Windows will no longer start. When I select Windows from the grub loader, the screen goes black with a blinking white horizontal cursor at the top left of the screen. I have read that it may of something to do with "update from Karmic to Lucid", what ever that is.

After the latest update of Debian Wheezy, about three days ago, one of my machines won't boot anymore. The update was done by:
Code: Select all/usr/sbin/update-smart-drivedb
apt-get update
apt-get -y upgrade
apt-get -y autoremove
I get the error message: "Alert! /dev/disk/by-uuid/71c... does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"
The dir /dev/disk contains only "by-id" and "by-path".
I booted with the rescue system, dropped into a shell and recreated the ramdisk with
Code: Select alldpkg-reconfigure linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64
dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
But without success. On another machine the update went flawlessly.

I did the latest update on the opensuse 11.4 other day and since then my USB drive is not mounting. initially I thought its gone because my son dropped on the floor. But then when I plugged it to Windows 7 machine it mounted then I plugged it into another Ubuntu 10.10 machine it mounted so I figured out the there is some issue in the latest update. I have all the VMs in this drive and my main laptop is with OpenSuse 11.4

After a large partial update (including nvidia drivers as well as a lot of other stuff - sorry for the imprecision but it was long enough to merit stepping away to eat dinner), my computer crashed when I tried to shut it down, and now when I try to boot up, it takes me as far as the login screen (minus the logins) with the mouse pointer active. It plays the Ubuntu drums and then that's it for activity. The mouse moves with no problem but there's nothing to click on. Going into recovery mode causes the system to hang. I can only access my files via a live cd.
When the computer first crashed and before it goes to the almost-but-not-quite-a-login screen, it displays the following message:
Code:
/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256
I'm finding it ironic that the error occurs in a "sanity check" because it's costing me mine. Is there a solution that doesn't involve a new install?
I'm running an Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM and an nvidia MX4000 video card with 128 MB RAM (yes, its last OS was written in cuneiform ;p)

I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

I just ran the update manager and am now unable to access any of my files. Additionally I can not run the software center or run apt-get from the terminal. Luckily my web browsers and email client are still working.
I first ran the update a few days ago, but for some reason, about 30 or so packages wouldn't download, so update manager installed all but those ~30 packages. Afterwards everything seemed fine, except the clock was broken on my desktop, which corrected itself after two reboots.
Since that time the only major change I've made to the system is to rollback my version of gcc to 4.3.0 from 4.4.3. This was done in hopes that the older version of gcc would read a header file in some software I need to get installed (apparently ubuntu doesn't like locale.h). However, doing so did help.
Today when I got into work I thought I would see if I couldn't finish the update before trying some different versions of gcc, so I ran the update manager again. This time it downloaded the remaining ~30 packages and installed them, no problem. It wasn't until I ran apt-get that I noticed that all the icons on my desktop had disappeared.
below is the error I get from running apt-get
Code:
chris@chris-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install build-essential
apt-get: /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by apt-get)
apt-get: /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.10-6.so.4.8)

I just started using Ubuntu 10.04 for development reasons and installed Ubuntu on a seperate harddrive with dualboot option with Windows 7.Today Win 7 got an update and I mysteriously got bumped back to the grub screen after selecting Windows boot option, but my Ubuntu was ok. After that I probably did the worst I could, and googled the problem and tried out some years-old advices which messed up my ubuntu boot as well.I am currently using my computer through Ubuntu Live Usb.

As the title says i updated my system which then needed a reboot. I also installed Mixxx djing software to try it out. So i thought id just restart the system. Usually when i boot into my desktop wireless automatically can connect to my router but not this time, wired only for now... i know theres tons of wireless issue threads but some more experienced users will be able to get straight to the point and run through some diagnostics with me.

I'm running a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu Jaunty. I made some changes to the grab menu so that my windows OS would appear at the top of the list .I know I could have changed the default so that Vista would have been highlighted instead of Jaunty. But the reason I moved it to the top is because when I do a kernel update, I would still want Vista to be the default booting OS. Anyways, after the update my Vista OS disappeared from grub. It didn't get deleted because the Vista partition is still accessible from Jaunty. Can anyone help me boot into Vista and preferably make it the default OS even after a Kernel update? I attached part of my menu.lst .

I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.
I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).
Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.
So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).
Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.
I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.
When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.

I have a vista/ubuntu 9.10 duel boot laptop. Last week the screen was broken so it went back to the manufacture. Before that I rename the /etc/grub.d/10_linux file and ran grub-update so that Grub will only show windows boot menu (in case it confuses the repairman) now I have the laptop back and I am eating my own medicine.how to restore my ubuntu boot menus? I can now only boot into windows, although it seems like I can go to my ubuntu partition and change back my grub.cfg (which I did not backup!)but I can't remember the menuentry details. Is there any way, other than manually change my grub.cfg, so that I can boot into ubuntu again?

Ubuntu's update manager recently updated the Grub menu.lst file. It let me decide if I wanted to keep my old menu.lst or the new one. After deciding that I was fine with the new one, I found out that I can no longer boot into Windows 7. I had previously edited menu.lst so that Windows would be at the top of the list, however, I didn't notice that this had put it into the automagic update area, and I realize now that I should have just edited what the default number was instead of moving around the entries.
Anyways, I can no longer access my Windows 7 OS via Grub, and I was wondering what sort of fix I can have for this. I've tried running update-grub, but it hasn't fixed the problem. The Windows bootloader is on the first partition of the only hard drive, as far as I can remember.

With a bit of help from this forum I managed to install 10.04. The solution was to add i915.modeset=1 to the options when booting up from CD.Now I need to do the same in order to boot up from HD. I've opened /etc/default/grub and changed the relevant line to include the above option. But I need to run "update-grub" and it comes back with an error to the effect that it 'can't find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)Also, the boot menu only has ubuntu - no sign of windows in my intended dual-boot. What can I do?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10. Normally when I boot, I get the choice to run Ubuntu or the Windows loader, where I choose between 7 or XP. I have just noticed that when I boot now, I do not have the choice of going into windows. This has happened on two of my PC's just in the last few days. I assume one of the updates has overwritten the grub configuration file as I still get the grub menu but not the windows option. I have tried sudo update-grub but this did not solve the problem.

Everytime I want to connect to my Windows 7 pc, it will just prompt me a "password required for xx pc"...and keep looping on every username/password [afaik from the windows account], and I'm unable to login to it.
Even tho I've set "LmCompatibilityLevel" dword key, 1 or 2 [restarted every set] under LSA..it's still the same thing happens...
