Software :: Rosegarden Doesn't See Midi Ports

Jun 5, 2010

I am trying to use Rosegarden but it does not see any midi ports. If I run LMMS it is able to see 20:UA-4F and 14:Midi Through. Jack sees them too. Furthermore, Rosegarden's transport does not even start, no synths availble. How to set rosegarden? (I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx)

Ubuntu :: Serial MIDI - Doesn't See Any Serial Ports?

Jun 21, 2011

I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm attempting to use a microcontroller to send MIDI messages over a virtual serial port. I want to (eventually) read them with Mixxx. I'm using an FTDI chip, so I get a /dev/ttyUSB0. I've tried spikenzielabs' Serial-Midi program, but it doesn't see any serial ports. NOTEMIDI looks really old and won't compile on my 10.04 LTS machine.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rosegarden Doesn't Work Along With Desktop Visual Effects

Dec 21, 2010

I have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?

Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?

PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]

Software :: MIDI Doesn't Work In GNU

Mar 23, 2010

MIDI does not work in GNU/Linux.It doesn't work, due to the fact that the only free soundfont I've come across.I've searched around a lot and come up with nothing, any ideas?the only solution is to pay for a soundfont, then fine, just tell me the name of a soundfont that will work without any hacking and/or modification or patches with Timidity. If not even a (payware) soundfont like that exists -- if my only option is to buy something else than Timidity, that comes with its own proprietary soundfont, then please tell me the name of that, I'm tired of this.

Programming :: Write MIDI Driver / Interfacing With Linux MIDI

Jul 31, 2011

I am building a midi synthesizer that I'd like to be able to control from linux. I know its a rather broad question, but, how do I go about this? At this point the hardware consists of a simple UART bridge, and I've already written a simple C++ program using termios to send the raw midi data to the device. Obviously I don't want to write a player/sequencer from scratch, so where should I start if I wanted to get this thing to work with, say, a sequencer like rosegarden? Do I write the driver for rosegarden, or hook into alsa or what?

Software :: Application Doesn't Distinguish Between Different Input Ports

Feb 26, 2010

I working on a project, where a central unit (we call it System Controller ) should talk to several peripheral units on different input ports. The system controller have 4 RS485 ports, 1 RS232, 1 USB A, 1 USB B and a switch with 2 TCP/IP ports. The problem is that when the peripheral unit that is supposed to be connected to one of the two TCP/IP inputs isn't connected (which the system should be able to handle), the software thinks that data from the unit connected to the RS232 port is from the unit that should be connected to the TCP/IP.

The input peripherals are defined as:
#define CR_DEVICE "/dev/ttyS1" // ttyS1
#define SL_PORT "/dev/ttyUSB0"
#define BO_PORT ""

It is the last one which are supposed to receive from the TCP/IP port, and of course the first one which should receive data from the RS232 port.

Slackware :: Rosegarden Hangs On 13 Install?

Feb 21, 2011

I have been using slackware for quite some time now and love installing software in it. Since you get to know whats actually going into your system adn all. Anyways I have been trying to download and install Rosegarden all day now. I installed all the dependencies listed here:

ladspa_sdk
dssi
liblo
liblrdf

[code]....

i have to physically stop it because my computer hangs up so bad and it sits like that for hours! Granted this is Rosegarden 10.04.1 but i have also installed 10.04.2 under my downloads section and ran into the same problem. Now i know that slack 13 dropped QT3 and went to QT4. Rosegarden 10.04.2 was supposed to run on QT4 but i get the same code and the same hang up every single time. No matter what version i try to install. I only tried 10.04.1 thinking that maybe it would work on the slack 13 kernel since thats the number that was for this build in slackbuild.org and 10.04.2 was in the 13.1 tree but neither of them install and just hang up on the computer. Is it a qt3 to a qt4 issue?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rosegarden - Start Without Jackd?

Jul 14, 2010

I want to use rosegarden purely for midi (i.e not audio, recording synths etc.) as my midi keyboard already has loads of great tones. When jackd is running, it really slows rosegardens performance, and the trouble is with the new rosegarden (10.04) jack is started automatically when you start rosegarden. Is there a way to prevent this? Please help, rosegarden is a great app but this is rather annoying. Uninstalling jack would be bad because other things I need use jack.

Slackware :: ZynAddSubFX As DSSI Plug-in For Rosegarden?

Jan 21, 2011

The sound capability of ZynAddSubFX and Rosegarden's ability to use LADSPA along both Windows VST's and DSSI plugins like ZASF are simply excellent illustrations of Chris Cannam's ability to transform the chaotic mess of audio on Linux into something sonically and visually!

[code]....

An incredible combination ... which doesn't even address the ability to produce stellar musical documents as well... I'll probably move my comments on adapting this combination for Slackware64 from the Desktop thread to here ...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Experiment With Hydrogen, Rosegarden And Other Music Apps?

Jul 12, 2010

I want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?

[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]

What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?

Ubuntu :: Changing Midi To MP3 ( Using Timidity )?

Mar 14, 2010

Been searching around about this for ages, got a .mid exported from rosegarden (which is an awesome program). Need to make it an MP3 or OGG or any kind of standard audio file. With Timidity: I'm using version 2.13.2. Found this advice: [URl]... Isn't it awesome and clear and well put together? If your wondering yes the file will play for me from Timidity and I can hear it fine. Problem is there's no "Config" on my version. Closest thing is when i click file and save config. Normal click doesn't open the menu, gotta click and hold, which i do, then drag the cursor down to where i want it and release, nothing happened. It also said meta + S would open it, that's super/windows key + S, right? No luck.

Anyone know a comandline way of doing it? I found a list of commands for it here but it's probably grossly out of date: [URL]...y/timidity.txt and i couldn't find anything about saving. With Audacity:

Apparently you can use Audacity to record the output of the sound card directly. However I can't seem to figure out how to set this. It says in the into there's a preferences drop down next to the mixer thingy, maybe i'm blind but I can't find it anywhere.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 Midi Not Working Still

Jun 4, 2010

I have been researching this for a few days and I am getting nowhere. All I want to do is play midi files in Ubuntu 10.04 and also in Firefox. If I install, for ex. Rosegarden it will play the midi but without sound.I have timidity installed as well as mozplugger. From the start midis partially work in Totem, but the sound is far from right.

I never had this much of an issue with midi before, really starting to irritate me.Is this a pulseaudio issue? I really don't feel like playing around with jack either, never have luck with it. It seems that installing timidty should have allowed me to play midi files on my computer.

General :: USB Midi Input Device?

Jul 18, 2010

I just bought an M-Audio Keystation 49e off of craigslist and I'm at a bit of a loss on where to start to use it as an input device for muse or rosegarden.

Distro: Debian Lenny
Kernel: 2.6.26-2-686
Laptop: Compaq V5305WM

Everything seems setup, but I'm at a loss on how to use it in the applications. It doesn't have any sound synthesis abilities on the keyboard, it's just an input device. Without the keyboard I usually go this route:

jackd -R -d alsa &
timidity -Oj -iA &
rosegarden

And midi events output sounds and all that jazz. I'm wanting to input notes / record from the keyboard. But still output all sounds in the aforementioned manner. If I could get those to happen while I record that would help a bunch. Maybe it's just too late in the day for me to wrap my brain around it at the moment.

Fedora :: Converting Midi To Wav In Sound Converter?

Nov 22, 2009

Trying to convert a midi file I created in Rosegarden into a wav file using Sound Converter. Snd Cnvrtr wants to load some gstreamer "bad" plugins, but they end up conflicting with "good" plugins and "ugly' plugins that had been loaded in the kernel (I think). Thought I might remove gstreamer and load up the "bad" plugins, but that meant removing a huge chunk of programming including Snd Cnvrtr. Anyone got any idea how I might do the conversion apart from Snd Cnvrtr? Either that or how I might get hold of the appropriate plugins to allow the midi to wav conversion to take place?

Fedora :: USB / MIDI Keyboard - Cannot Get Jack To Start?

Jun 14, 2011

I am a simple musician who bought a laptop that didn't have windows, nor can I afford a Windows license (being a proper poor musician and all). I have an M-Audio KeyRig 49 midi controller that I would like to get some sound out of. How might I do this? I have jack, qjackctl, qsynth, et al but forget qsynth... I can't even get jack to start! I just need to hook this thing up to a piano sample and I'll be happy as anything. I understand that system information can be useful so here goes: Running F14... here are the jack messages (btw, ctrl C does not work when trying to copy from the jack messages window, despite the contextual menu saying it should. That sucks. where do I submit a bug?)

01:51:22.730 Patchbay deactivated.

Cannot connect to server socket .....

I have already seen the Fedora Musician's Guide [URL] which is long on theory but short on practical how-to documentation. Is there a better doc I can look at? Do I need to download some special drivers to get this midi interface working? If I plug this thing in to my friend's Mac and run GarageBand, it 'just works' (though GB's piano samples are fairly horrific considering how expensive macs are.) I already own some decent soundfonts but without working jack it seems they aren't much use.
