Exactly as the topic says; running a MIDI file through Timidity in command-line works fine, but doing it in Rosegarden just outputs silence.

General :: Fedora Repository Not Providing Up-to-date Versions Of Software?

Aug 13, 2010

I am using Linpus lite (a fedora based linux) on an ACER ONE notebook. I use a GUI to install/update or remove software. It is called pirut. I believe it a GUI of the yum command. The repository this install program uses is the fedora one. I find the following description of the repository in the menus of that GUI:
Name: Fedora Description:Fedora 8 - i386 Mirror list : h[URL]... The problem is the following: The versions I can install from that GUI are outdate. For example, the firefox I have is 2.0.0.14 although the newest one available at the firefox website is 3.6.8. The same with openoffice, gcc and many many other tools.

This is embarrassing: I wanted recently to install a software on my own which was not available at that repository. This software requires recent versions of many tools. It's embarassing to have to update them manually..

I assumed the default repository of fedora should have access to the newest versions. If that is true, then the problem is in my system and not in the repositories. In that case, does any one have a clue on how to fix that problem? Now if the repository I use is indeed outdated, Should I change to another repository? Can anyone indicate which repository is compatible with my system and how to add it?

Slackware :: Rosegarden Hangs On 13 Install?

Feb 21, 2011

I have been using slackware for quite some time now and love installing software in it. Since you get to know whats actually going into your system adn all. Anyways I have been trying to download and install Rosegarden all day now. I installed all the dependencies listed here:

ladspa_sdk
dssi
liblo
liblrdf

[code]....

i have to physically stop it because my computer hangs up so bad and it sits like that for hours! Granted this is Rosegarden 10.04.1 but i have also installed 10.04.2 under my downloads section and ran into the same problem. Now i know that slack 13 dropped QT3 and went to QT4. Rosegarden 10.04.2 was supposed to run on QT4 but i get the same code and the same hang up every single time. No matter what version i try to install. I only tried 10.04.1 thinking that maybe it would work on the slack 13 kernel since thats the number that was for this build in slackbuild.org and 10.04.2 was in the 13.1 tree but neither of them install and just hang up on the computer. Is it a qt3 to a qt4 issue?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rosegarden - Start Without Jackd?

Jul 14, 2010

I want to use rosegarden purely for midi (i.e not audio, recording synths etc.) as my midi keyboard already has loads of great tones. When jackd is running, it really slows rosegardens performance, and the trouble is with the new rosegarden (10.04) jack is started automatically when you start rosegarden. Is there a way to prevent this? Please help, rosegarden is a great app but this is rather annoying. Uninstalling jack would be bad because other things I need use jack.

Jun 5, 2010

Slackware :: ZynAddSubFX As DSSI Plug-in For Rosegarden?

Jan 21, 2011

The sound capability of ZynAddSubFX and Rosegarden's ability to use LADSPA along both Windows VST's and DSSI plugins like ZASF are simply excellent illustrations of Chris Cannam's ability to transform the chaotic mess of audio on Linux into something sonically and visually!

[code]....

An incredible combination ... which doesn't even address the ability to produce stellar musical documents as well... I'll probably move my comments on adapting this combination for Slackware64 from the Desktop thread to here ...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Experiment With Hydrogen, Rosegarden And Other Music Apps?

Jul 12, 2010

I want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?

[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]

What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?

General :: Executing Shell Script - Setting Permissions And Providing Path

Jan 4, 2011

I've been looking around the net for executing a shell script. My basic understanding is that after setting executable permissions and providing a path (#!/bin/sh) in the first line of the script, I can type ./myscript to execute instead of sh myscript. This is not working for me. I can run "sh myscript" but not "./myscript" even though I know for sure I have across the board execute permission and my sh path is correct. I'm working on a redhat linux station.

General :: File Encryption In A Bash Script Without Explicity Providing Password?

Jul 30, 2010

I want to automate the following manual process.Currently, I am encryptying a set of files using openssl as follows:Encrypt file.txt to file.out using 256-bit AES in CBC mode $ openssl enc -aes-256-cbc -salt -in file1 -out file1.enI am then prompted for a password, which is then used to encrypt the fileWhen decrypting, I type $ openssl enc -d -aes-256-cbc -infile1.enc -out fileI am then prompted for the password - which again, I manually type.I want to automate this process of en/decryption - so I need to find a way of providing openssh with the password.

My first thought is whether it is possible to read the password from a file (say)? Or is there a better way of doing this? Also, I suppose that I will have to place restriction on who can view the password file - otherwise, that defeats the whole objective of using a password. I am thinking to run the bash script as a specific user, and then give only that user read rights to the contents of that file.Is this the way its done - or is there a better way?Ofcourse all of this leads to yet another question - which is, how to run a bash script as another user - without having to type the user pwd at the terminal.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rosegarden Doesn't Work Along With Desktop Visual Effects

Dec 21, 2010

I have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?

Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?

PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]

Fedora Installation :: F12 Get No Sound At All

Apr 18, 2010

Until recently I was running Fedora 8, for which I also struggled to get the sound working. IIRC the key step in F8 was to select ALSA instead of OSS drivers, or vice versa (I forget which), but that option doesn't seem to exist any more.Since installing F12 I get no sound at all (works fine in Windows). I see a number of threads on this topic in various forums, the most informative I've found being URL... I've checked all the settings mentioned in that thread, but nothing seems to be wrong. Here are a few details of my set-up:

If I run RhythmBox everything seems to work. RhythmBox itself behaves as if it plays and the volume meter shows sensible varying levels of sound. But my speakers don't make any sound at all. All other apps I've tried behave similarly.

Fedora Installation :: No Non-root Sound In 14

Alas, I am having problems getting sound working for the normal user. I enabled root access to see if it was a permissions thing. Clearly it is. Sounds work for the root account. I have been reading a lot of posts to see what I can change. Nothing has worked yet. I have put myself in the audio group in /etc/group, but it does not help. For some reason pulseaudio will only work for root. I am being denied access to /dev/snd/* even though I am in the audio group and the permissions of the files in /dev/snd allow read/write access to the audiio group. lspci -v | grep audio 00:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev a2)
