Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting MIDI Keyboard To Play?

Dec 30, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with the Kubuntu desktop environment. I'm trying to use my MIDI keyboard through ALSA, Linuxsampler and Qsampler. But I still haven't got a sound out of it, and I fear that the information about the existence of the keyboard doesn't get through. That, or I don't know how to configure properly.

In sndstat, both my sound card (Guitar Rig) and my keyboard (Hua Xing) is showing up:

Quote:

cerapter@Ancalagon:~$ cat /dev/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.21 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux Ancalagon 2.6.32-26-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 10:14:11 UTC 2010 x86_64
Config options: 0

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Setup MIDI Keyboard To Play Piano

Jun 5, 2010

I just switched to Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm looking for a way to be able to play piano with my M-audio Keystation 88es keyboard. In Windows I use the amazing Synthogy Ivory piano sounds. Is there anything similar in linux? everything up? I followed different instructions on how to setup Jack to make it work and it can see the keyboard but I wasn't able to get any sound out of it.My computer has the Asus built-in sound card and I also have a separate M-audio Audiophile 192 sound card.

Aug 11, 2010

I need to play or preferably convert (i.e. to MP3) old SNG files, which contain voice records. From what I could find, it's basically a MIDI created by synthetiser. I think it was recorded by some ancient VLC player. I failed so far to play it on anything I could download.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MIDI - Players Don't Play Or Crash

Feb 20, 2010

I have a problem playing MIDI files on my system: I tried opening two MIDI files in Audacious, VLC, Aqualung and Rhythmbox, and Rhythmbox is the only one that will play them:

- Audacious crashes when clicking on the file in the playlist (immediately disappears)

- Aqualung doesn't add them to its playlist

- VLC produces an error msg saying it can't play MIDI

- Rhythmbox plays a MIDI file and immediately crashes at its end

I'm on Ubuntu Karmic 64 and have timidity installed.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Yamaha Disklavier Piano Won't Play Midi

Apr 21, 2010

I have switched from windows in the past few months and have solved all my issues with Ubuntu so far. The only problem I still have now is that I can not play midi files on my piano through Ubuntu. This is the piano I have: [URL] When I had windows, I used Dell Latitude c600, Van Basco's software: [URL] and one of these USB-midi cables: [URL]

to play my midi files on the piano. In ubuntu 9.1 I can play the midi but only through the laptop. It does not get sent to the piano. I'm new to Linux but can follow direction. Hate to be going back to windows. Installing Van Basco through wine keeps crashing and does not work.

General :: Play A Midi File In Slackware?

May 10, 2011

I would like to know how I can play a midi file in Slackware command line. I write "aplaymidi -p (port number) file.mid" and I see that it is working, but I can't hear anything. As I have Windows XP in a computer and Windows 7 in another, I have to convert the midi files into wave files in order to listen to them in Slackware using play. There is another thing that I haven't ever been able to do in spite of the fact that I have had Slackware installed in my computers since 2002, and this thing is: I have never been able to connect Internet using Slackware or any other Linux distribuition. I like Linux very much but I am frustrated at not being able to do these two things: to play a midi file in Slackware and to connect Internet.

Ubuntu :: MIDI Controller - USB Piano Keyboard Setup

I'm looking for info on setting up a piano type usb keyboard (also called midi controller?) in ubuntu. Any of the references I have found cite alsa, and I'm assuming they won't work with pulse. Fedora :: USB / MIDI Keyboard - Cannot Get Jack To Start?

Jun 14, 2011

I am a simple musician who bought a laptop that didn't have windows, nor can I afford a Windows license (being a proper poor musician and all). I have an M-Audio KeyRig 49 midi controller that I would like to get some sound out of. How might I do this? I have jack, qjackctl, qsynth, et al but forget qsynth... I can't even get jack to start! I just need to hook this thing up to a piano sample and I'll be happy as anything. I understand that system information can be useful so here goes: Running F14... here are the jack messages (btw, ctrl C does not work when trying to copy from the jack messages window, despite the contextual menu saying it should. That sucks. where do I submit a bug?)

01:51:22.730 Patchbay deactivated.
01:51:22.745 Statistics reset.
01:51:22.799 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server socket
jack server is not running or cannot be started
01:51:22.811 ALSA connection graph change.
01:51:24.191 JACK is starting...
01:51:24.192 /usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:0 -r48000 -p1024 -n2 -Xseq
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server socket .....

I have already seen the Fedora Musician's Guide [URL] which is long on theory but short on practical how-to documentation. Is there a better doc I can look at? Do I need to download some special drivers to get this midi interface working? If I plug this thing in to my friend's Mac and run GarageBand, it 'just works' (though GB's piano samples are fairly horrific considering how expensive macs are.) I already own some decent soundfonts but without working jack it seems they aren't much use.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Use Plug'n'play Mouse / Keyboard Remote As Lirc Device?

Mar 16, 2010

I've bought this remote control that sais it works in Vista, XP etc. without any driver. Basically it has a bunch of buttons that replace the mouse and a bunch of others that replace basic keyboard functions (arrows, enter, escape). It has a USB IR receiver so I thought I could simply use it as a lirc remote in Ubuntu.

However, it sais absolutely nothing on it except for "PCremote" so during lirc installation I have no idea what to choose. And, interestingly, I accidentally discovered that it works in Ubuntu, too, out of the box. Controlling the mouse and acting like a keyboard. Is there a way I can forfeit current functionality and just get it to work as a customizable lirc remote? Or even better, keep current functionality but change it only for certain apps (xbmc, vlc etc)?

Programming :: Write MIDI Driver / Interfacing With Linux MIDI

Jul 31, 2011

I am building a midi synthesizer that I'd like to be able to control from linux. I know its a rather broad question, but, how do I go about this? At this point the hardware consists of a simple UART bridge, and I've already written a simple C++ program using termios to send the raw midi data to the device. Obviously I don't want to write a player/sequencer from scratch, so where should I start if I wanted to get this thing to work with, say, a sequencer like rosegarden? Do I write the driver for rosegarden, or hook into alsa or what?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 Midi Not Working Still

Jun 4, 2010

I have been researching this for a few days and I am getting nowhere. All I want to do is play midi files in Ubuntu 10.04 and also in Firefox. If I install, for ex. Rosegarden it will play the midi but without sound.I have timidity installed as well as mozplugger. From the start midis partially work in Totem, but the sound is far from right.

I never had this much of an issue with midi before, really starting to irritate me.Is this a pulseaudio issue? I really don't feel like playing around with jack either, never have luck with it. It seems that installing timidty should have allowed me to play midi files on my computer.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: MIDI App For Creating Rhythms?

Apr 25, 2011

I am looking for a software that would allow me to build rhythms, adding one percussion sound after another. Ideally, it should be possible to connect it to external MIDI device for recording and playing back the recorded notes. This would go something like this: I set up a rhythm, say, 4/4, and I hear metronome sound that hints about the pace. I have a percussion voice selected on my synth, and whenever I press a key on the keyboard, that sound is recorded on my PC, registering it's position in the pattern. PC is repeatedly playing back the recorded sequence, so I can enrich the beat with more and more instruments. When the job is done, I'd save the created sequence in MID file, and use it later.

I have installed Rosegarden on my Ubuntu, and it might well be that it has such mode that does exactly what I'm looking for, but since Rosegarden doesn't seem to have official forum (only newslist, but I am now reluctant to sign me up to just another newslist), I wanted to check in this forum, maybe someone knows right away. At least, I have succeeded playing MID files via Rosegarden to my synth, and recording from synth to the Rosegarden interface, and save the result in MID file.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Default Midi Sounds?

Jun 26, 2010

I'm not sure what the technical term for the thing that creates midi sounds. Is it the midi sequencer? or midi driver?Regardless, I'm unhappy with the tones ubuntu produces for its drum midis. Does any one know how to change which tones it uses? I use lilypond to write percussion music and it can be easily translated into a midi file. I like to do this so that I can hear how the music sounds in real life and many mistakes.Unfortunately the toms are painfully low and hard to distinguish.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Midi And Audio Won't Work At The Same Time?

Jul 27, 2010

As an arranger of collegiate a cappella music, I often times need to listen to a song as I'm playing with a midi sequencer or some arranging software. On Ubuntu, since Gutsy, I've often run into the same problem from distribution to distribution:

Midi and audio won't work at the same time. If I have an audio file open on VLC or FireFox, I can't play Midi sequences on my arrangement. If I'm arranging and listening to Midi notes, I can't play music. Note that it's incredibly inconvenient to constantly close one so I can play the other to finish arrangements.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Midi With Alsa Oss Emulation And Pulseaudio?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm under Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron using pulseaudio. I've got 2 soundcards : one internal AC97 7.1 without midi (card 0 in ALSA) and a PCI C-MEDIA 2.1 with OPL3 midi (card 3 in ALSA) I have sound in most ALSA or OSS applications with full 7.1 + 2.1 duplex. I have MIDI playback in any ALSA MIDI players (client 29:0 in ALSA).

I'm trying to run Final Doom for W95 on WINE with OSS driver. I have sound effects but no MIDI music. I tryed with padsp and aoss wrappers. I know I can use ALSA driver in wine or timidity, but I would rather use padsp + hardware MIDI if possible. How do I configure ALSA OSS emulation for MIDI playback and check that it's working ? I tryed playmidi but whatever I told it, it couldn't find any midi device.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Studio 9.10 MIDI Input From Sound Card Not Working

Mar 21, 2010

I am using ubuntu 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31-9-rt) and an M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI sound card, and trying to get MIDI inputs and outputs to work on this sound card.I have Jack installed and working. MIDI signals from virtual keyboard or a MIDI player can be routed to fluidsynth, and fluidsynth's audio can be played back through the outputs of the delta 1010.I can use a MIDI sequencer (e.g. rosegarden or qtractor) to record MIDI from virtual keyboard, with jack handling the routing.

But, no matter how I configure the connections in jack, I can't get any signals from the "MIDI In" port on the sound card.Does anybody have some thoughts on how to fix this? Where is the disconnect between the delta 1010 and qtractor? I am concerned also that the "MIDI In" LED on the front panel of the Delta 1010 never blinks. There must be some basic ALSA configuration that needs to be done to activate and use these MIDI ports, or something. I've been trying to figure it out for days.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dvd Drive Doesn't Play Store Bought But Does Play My Copies Of Them

Mar 10, 2010

After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.

When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.

I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)

Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
