Only place where i need midi is mainly when using Tuxguitar. I tried tuxguitars settings, but it shows only tuxguitar sequencer and midi-through port 0. Haven't done this before so i really don't know where to start from..?
View 2 RepliesI am building a midi synthesizer that I'd like to be able to control from linux. I know its a rather broad question, but, how do I go about this? At this point the hardware consists of a simple UART bridge, and I've already written a simple C++ program using termios to send the raw midi data to the device. Obviously I don't want to write a player/sequencer from scratch, so where should I start if I wanted to get this thing to work with, say, a sequencer like rosegarden? Do I write the driver for rosegarden, or hook into alsa or what?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to hook up an external MIDI keyboard to Ubuntu (Studio) with no success. I can play MIDI files but not get the s/w to reguster any events from the MIDI keyboard. I have a soundblaster LIve! with front panel and am usng the MIDI in on this, with a ROland PC-300 kybd. Headphones work fine on the panel so I know this has been connected OK. The software (Rosegarden) 'sees' the keyboard as in input device but nothing happens when I play.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMIDI does not work in GNU/Linux.It doesn't work, due to the fact that the only free soundfont I've come across.I've searched around a lot and come up with nothing, any ideas?the only solution is to pay for a soundfont, then fine, just tell me the name of a soundfont that will work without any hacking and/or modification or patches with Timidity.If not even a (payware) soundfont like that exists -- if my only option is to buy something else than Timidity, that comes with its own proprietary soundfont, then please tell me the name of that, I'm tired of this.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAs an arranger of collegiate a cappella music, I often times need to listen to a song as I'm playing with a midi sequencer or some arranging software. On Ubuntu, since Gutsy, I've often run into the same problem from distribution to distribution:
Midi and audio won't work at the same time. If I have an audio file open on VLC or FireFox, I can't play Midi sequences on my arrangement. If I'm arranging and listening to Midi notes, I can't play music. Note that it's incredibly inconvenient to constantly close one so I can play the other to finish arrangements.
I am currently running 9.04 on an HP Mini 1033CL.When I first upgraded to 9.04, my sound card would not work. Finally, about 3 months ago, an update changed that. Now, I see that 9.10 is available, but I am nervous about installing it. Are there any foreseeable problems I need to know about? Keep in mind, I know little about Ubuntu and use it on my netbook (my fun computer) because it is free and I hate windows. Therefore, if there are buggy problems I have to adjust in bios or by tagging something, or whatever, I have no idea how to do it. 9.04 seems fine, so why upgrade?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to 10.04 from 8.04. My Brother laser printer HL-CDW4070 no longer prints. The printer did survive a previous upgrade. Several other users have had this problem for other printers, but the fixes look to be brand specific. I hesitate to reinstall the LPR and CUPS without first knowing whether there's an easier fix. Error message from evince on a pdf file: Print Error There was a problem processing document'R Graphics Output' Retried with another file ... and it hung. Retried from xpdf and it queued behind the one that hung.
Maybe related:
- flash plugins were in a bad state. I followed advice from another post and got it fixed.
- synaptic shows hl4070cdwcups and hl4070cdwlpr both installed with the latest version which is 1.0.0-7 .... but they're listed as size 0 B (properties says size is N/A)
- I reinstalled cups-pdf which was missing/broken and restarted the computer but still no luck
- power cycled the printer, tried again.
I have recently upgraded to 10.04 and try as i will I cannot get Skype to work. Sound is very patchy and hence unintelligable. Worked fine in 8.04 usung alsa.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using an old modem from 2007, which my ISP calls Type I. It didn't have wireless connectivity and I used pppoeconf to setup my connection - username and password and set it to connect at boot time and everything was fine till today. I bought a Type II modem from my ISP and had to return the type I modem to them. Since the technician had no knowledge of Ubuntu (or Linux in general), he configured the modem in Windows 7, tested that the connection was working, tested the wireless connection in my netbook running XP and then he left.
Now I can't connect through pppoeconf in Ubuntu (running 9.10). The terminal says eth0 is listed but the 'access concentrator' or something like that isn't responding (no other process was running at that time). I feel very vulnerable while browsing in Windows so I want to get back to Ubuntu ASAP. Oh, and here's the output when I run "dhclient eth0"

Previously (on Lenny) I would boot my computer and it would happily boot through to the Gnome login page (the pretty graphical one). Now (on Squeeze) I get the plain old text login prompt. So I login normally and try running "startx". It comes up with a black screen and a mouse pointer. Nothing else. Ctrl+shift commands seem to work so I am able to get to another terminal. When I switch back to the first terminal there are just come Gnome startup messages.
I really need to have this working in order to do some "work". give me a sure fire way of either fixing this, even if it means instructions on re-installing Gnome? Normally I could copy log files from my Linux machine to my email computer but with no desktop I find this too difficult and really don't have the time to spend working out how to do it. (I have "work" to do as well). So, just briefly I will summarise the Xorg.0.log file:

Recently I upgraded my Fedora 13 to its latest (stable) version Fedora 14 Laughlin. Things seemed to have gone well until I noticed that my evolution mail client stopped working. When I clicked to open Evolution, it loaded but immediately it got hanged, and every time I did I didn't work. I posted this question in fedora forum it self many views and no response. Can anyone in this form guide me as to why this is happening and how to rectify it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedBeen searching around about this for ages, got a .mid exported from rosegarden (which is an awesome program). Need to make it an MP3 or OGG or any kind of standard audio file. With Timidity: I'm using version 2.13.2. Found this advice: [URl]... Isn't it awesome and clear and well put together? If your wondering yes the file will play for me from Timidity and I can hear it fine. Problem is there's no "Config" on my version. Closest thing is when i click file and save config. Normal click doesn't open the menu, gotta click and hold, which i do, then drag the cursor down to where i want it and release, nothing happened. It also said meta + S would open it, that's super/windows key + S, right? No luck.
Anyone know a comandline way of doing it? I found a list of commands for it here but it's probably grossly out of date: [URL]...y/timidity.txt and i couldn't find anything about saving. With Audacity:
Apparently you can use Audacity to record the output of the sound card directly. However I can't seem to figure out how to set this. It says in the into there's a preferences drop down next to the mixer thingy, maybe i'm blind but I can't find it anywhere.
I have been researching this for a few days and I am getting nowhere. All I want to do is play midi files in Ubuntu 10.04 and also in Firefox. If I install, for ex. Rosegarden it will play the midi but without sound.I have timidity installed as well as mozplugger. From the start midis partially work in Totem, but the sound is far from right.
I never had this much of an issue with midi before, really starting to irritate me.Is this a pulseaudio issue? I really don't feel like playing around with jack either, never have luck with it. It seems that installing timidty should have allowed me to play midi files on my computer.
Currently enjoying TuxGuitar, but I was wondering if there is a way to use some sort of Creative Commons drum kit samples instead of the current MIDI drums. Also would like to use some sort of synth or samples for guitars. I have looked for tutorials on this, but have not found anything yet.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with the Kubuntu desktop environment. I'm trying to use my MIDI keyboard through ALSA, Linuxsampler and Qsampler. But I still haven't got a sound out of it, and I fear that the information about the existence of the keyboard doesn't get through. That, or I don't know how to configure properly.

I am looking for a software that would allow me to build rhythms, adding one percussion sound after another. Ideally, it should be possible to connect it to external MIDI device for recording and playing back the recorded notes.This would go something like this: I set up a rhythm, say, 4/4, and I hear metronome sound that hints about the pace. I have a percussion voice selected on my synth, and whenever I press a key on the keyboard, that sound is recorded on my PC, registering it's position in the pattern. PC is repeatedly playing back the recorded sequence, so I can enrich the beat with more and more instruments. When the job is done, I'd save the created sequence in MID file, and use it later.
I have installed Rosegarden on my Ubuntu, and it might well be that it has such mode that does exactly what I'm looking for, but since Rosegarden doesn't seem to have official forum (only newslist, but I am now reluctant to sign me up to just another newslist), I wanted to check in this forum, maybe someone knows right away. At least, I have succeeded playing MID files via Rosegarden to my synth,and recording from synth to the Rosegarden interface, and save the result in MID file.
I have a problem playing MIDI files on my system: I tried opening two MIDI files in Audacious, VLC, Aqualung and Rhythmbox, and Rhythmbox is the only one that will play them:
- Audacious crashes when clicking on the file in the playlist (immediately disappears)
- Aqualung doesn't add them to its playlist
- VLC produces an error msg saying it can't play MIDI
- Rhythmbox plays a MIDI file and immediately crashes at its end
I'm on Ubuntu Karmic 64 and have timidity installed.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 rt (realtime) kernel on a Dell box and trying to hook it up to a Yamaha P-80 keyboard. I'm not sure how to figure out what kind of MIDI cable I'm using. But I haven't been able to get the keyboard to play or write music on my Ubuntu or on Windows XP.

I'm looking for info on setting up a piano type usb keyboard (also called midi controller?) in ubuntu. Any of the references I have found cite alsa, and I'm assuming they won't work with pulse. Is it the midi sequencer? or midi driver?Regardless, I'm unhappy with the tones ubuntu produces for its drum midis. Does any one know how to change which tones it uses? I use lilypond to write percussion music and it can be easily translated into a midi file. I like to do this so that I can hear how the music sounds in real life and many mistakes.Unfortunately the toms are painfully low and hard to distinguish.

I've got 2 soundcards : one internal AC97 7.1 without midi (card 0 in ALSA) and a PCI C-MEDIA 2.1 with OPL3 midi (card 3 in ALSA) I have sound in most ALSA or OSS applications with full 7.1 + 2.1 duplex. I have MIDI playback in any ALSA MIDI players (client 29:0 in ALSA).
I'm trying to run Final Doom for W95 on WINE with OSS driver. I have sound effects but no MIDI music. I tryed with padsp and aoss wrappers. I know I can use ALSA driver in wine or timidity, but I would rather use padsp + hardware MIDI if possible. How do I configure ALSA OSS emulation for MIDI playback and check that it's working ? I tryed playmidi but whatever I told it, it couldn't find any midi device.
