Ubuntu Multimedia :: Experiment With Hydrogen, Rosegarden And Other Music Apps?
Jul 12, 2010
I want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?
[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]
What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?
i have the OSS drivers installed for my M-audio Delta 66 card. took a lot of tweaking to get it my sound to work well. installed hydrogen and no sound. read that i need jackd. messed around with that and couldnt get it to work either. no matter what i do i cant get sound.
i am a super duper newbie at linux. usually i can find some writeup about how to make something work but not luck with this issue. thanks so much if you can help out.
a little background on myself and why i am such a newb: I use to download pirated copies of windows and pretty much any software i wanted. kinda thought it was time to stop stealing software when there was so much out there available for free. i am trying really hard to stick with linux. but i have a lot to learn. my friend who is big into linux told me "the linux community needs people like you" i am pretty much the average person, not a big computer nerd, but i am really into the unbuntu philosophy.
So there is sound but not from anything run thru jackaudio.Ardour and .9.5 hydrogen are not working i just upgraded a bunch of the programs using a ppa and now the jack ones are not working
I just upgraded some audio programs using a ppa and now there is no sound at all,i have been using hydrogen drum machine and ardour with jack audio and now there is no sound at all.
when I try to export a song from Hydrogen to WAV or MIDI they export, but when I try to listen to the exported file it doesn't show any sound or anything. I have Ubuntu 10.10 with Realtek AC '97 embedded sound card, the sound work perfect in the machine, actually it works perfect on the program itself but in the exporting, it doesn't work, what should I do to fix this problem?
I want to use rosegarden purely for midi (i.e not audio, recording synths etc.) as my midi keyboard already has loads of great tones. When jackd is running, it really slows rosegardens performance, and the trouble is with the new rosegarden (10.04) jack is started automatically when you start rosegarden. Is there a way to prevent this? Please help, rosegarden is a great app but this is rather annoying. Uninstalling jack would be bad because other things I need use jack.
When I start Rosegarden, my computer freezes. No faillure reports, nothing. Tyan-Tiger K8W, two Opterons 250, 4 GB memory, OpenSUSE 11.3, Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64, KDE 4.4.4 "release 2".
I am trying to use rosegarden, but it says "midi fine, no audio". I found a thread with this same issue and that said to instal jackd and a synth. So I installed qsynth and tried to start jackd. When starting jackd i get this error:
I have just finished installing Ubuntu Studio in my machine and downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers. I was so excited about using the desktop visual effects that I had seen in some advertising. But first, I just found 3 options in the Appearences config none, normal and extra. Where are desktop effects such as windows trasparence, the cube an others?
Second, and worst, I enabled the "extra" options and found its effects pleasant, but I could not use the for any longer because when I launch Rosegarden with desktop effects enabled, Rosegarden's title screen appears and after that its windows doesn't appear. I found out that the problem is enabling desktop effects because when they are disabled Rosegarden starts completely in few seconds. I even made a test and enabled effects, launched Rosegarden, wich of course dind't appear, after that disabled effects and Rosegarden's window imediately appeared. I use this software every day and it was the main reason why I migrated to Ubuntu. How can I use Rosegarden and visual effects as well?
PS: My PC has Pentium dual core with 2 x 1,88, 3GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS. My system is Ubuntu Studio 10.10 with Rosegarden 10.10 installed from [URL]
I have no sound after upgrading to 11.04. Sound control panel and test speakers emits no sound. The new music player won't play sounds from music CDs either.
I've had an awkward problem lately: every music player I use wants to instead of play music from my USB external hard drive, stream music from it. I have no idea why it suddenly started doing that. It may have been an accidental key-combo I pressed, thinking I had another window targeted and didn't bother pressing it again for my Totem music player. So I closed out of Totem in hopes that Rythmbox would work like totem used to. Well, it doesn't. It wants to stream music now.The problem with the streaming music is trivial, but here it is: I have a playlist with a little over 300 songs. I have Totem set to shuffle and repeat my music. Streaming music with it makes it just stop randomly after a few songs, and when I try to pause music and play it later it takes a good 30 seconds before it kicks back in at the beginning of the song.Like I always ask because I don't know enough to give back to the community yet, can anyone help me? Thanks.
I have a laptop that has both Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on it. I want to install Debian alongside the other two OS'es in order to experiment with it.
i wanted to do a little experiment here by changing the default display manger to something like Firefox or GIMP or another program..Since "Display Manager is a program"
Quote:
gnome.org: GDM is the GNOME Display Manager, a graphical login program. i should be able to replace it by with any other program
I set up an NFS server on my home computer, all very simple add a line to /etc/exports, run exportfs -a, all worked well and as expected. Through no fault with Fedora, bugs in the client computer made me abort the entire experiment. (long story that you don't want to know) Undo all the config, reboot. However I'm now left with an issue that's not earth shattering. Every time I reboot my computer a /Public directory is created in my home directory, this is obviously a legacy from the original NFS setup. I've trawled through log files, looked at config files in /var/lib/nfs, but can find nothing that might be generating this /Public directory at boot time.
I am learning about linux memory and hugepages, and know that hugepages basically is just memory that manages memory. I thought I'd experiment with the subject, and wrote a very small C program [URL] that basically just eats 20 GB of memory. The idea was that I would use this small C program to see how big the page table would get when handling large areas of memory when I'm not using hugepages. After running the program on my RHEL 5 server I was expecting the PageTable to be huge, but found that it was only about 43 MB. The page size on my RHEL box i 4 kB. Why I'm not getting the major PageTable size issue I was expecting?
I added a song to my basket and when I click Checkout....it just stays on this message "Connecting you to the Ubuntu One Music Store..." and does nothing.
I have been using slackware for quite some time now and love installing software in it. Since you get to know whats actually going into your system adn all. Anyways I have been trying to download and install Rosegarden all day now. I installed all the dependencies listed here:
ladspa_sdk dssi liblo liblrdf
[code]....
i have to physically stop it because my computer hangs up so bad and it sits like that for hours! Granted this is Rosegarden 10.04.1 but i have also installed 10.04.2 under my downloads section and ran into the same problem. Now i know that slack 13 dropped QT3 and went to QT4. Rosegarden 10.04.2 was supposed to run on QT4 but i get the same code and the same hang up every single time. No matter what version i try to install. I only tried 10.04.1 thinking that maybe it would work on the slack 13 kernel since thats the number that was for this build in slackbuild.org and 10.04.2 was in the 13.1 tree but neither of them install and just hang up on the computer. Is it a qt3 to a qt4 issue?
I am trying to use Rosegarden but it does not see any midi ports. If I run LMMS it is able to see 20:UA-4F and 14:Midi Through. Jack sees them too. Furthermore, Rosegarden's transport does not even start, no synths availble. How to set rosegarden? (I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx)
The sound capability of ZynAddSubFX and Rosegarden's ability to use LADSPA along both Windows VST's and DSSI plugins like ZASF are simply excellent illustrations of Chris Cannam's ability to transform the chaotic mess of audio on Linux into something sonically and visually!

An incredible combination ... which doesn't even address the ability to produce stellar musical documents as well... I'll probably move my comments on adapting this combination for Slackware64 from the Desktop thread to here ...
Some minimized apps no longer appear in the top menu and by that are no longer accessible. For example firefox with the minimize addon or Jungel Disk backup service. How can I reach apps that minimized them self and are not shown in the top menu?
Somehow and I'm not sure how. But opengl apps will completely hang Ubuntu 10.10 x64.This is my 2nd fresh install. I'm using the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx460 (260.19.12)Have already verified rendering is enabled, uninstalled nouveau & blacklisted, mesa glx is installed, no errors (that I can see), etc. When I run apps, even a gl screensaver, it will hang my whole box. To the point where I can't even, ctrl + alt + F1 (or F2, F3), for cli. So no command line output. And I've tested this in World of Padman, Alien Arena, Call of Duty 4 (under Wine), even Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Apps will start, but any gl content will quickly hang. This is the first time running ubuntu x64, and a new box

I've been having this problem for some time now, but none of the fixes for other flash problems have worked (re-installing Flash, installing Flash-aid, disabling compiz, upgrading Firefox, etc), and I can't seem to find a similar thread.
My issue is this, if I go to a site in Firefox that uses flash like ....., megavideo, grooveshark, or slacker.com and begin to load a video, song, or station, I can't open any other windows or switch to another desktop without the app freezing and going blank; sometimes it just shows white space as if nothing were ever posted, other times it shows a grey box where the app was, but no longer works. If I right click in these spaces, nothing happens as when I right click on, say, a megavideo video and get a drop-down list. The only thing that solves the problem is refreshing the page.
I never had this problem with older versions of ubuntu like jaunty, and it's rather annoying since I can't do anything else while a video is loading or music is playing.
I have lucid and jack almost the way I want. I can't get apps like flash (in firefox) and rhythmbox to run through JACK. I've followed some outdated guides on the forums here, but I haven't had any luck.
I set up gstreamer to use jackaudiosink, but no luck.
If you ask me, JACK + ALSA should be the default, with maybe a simplified or automated control system for people who don't want to exploit their might
I hate having to close up a massive JACK patch just to watch a quick movie, or having to close Pidgin so JACK will start.
I am running XBMC-standalone on a minimal Ubuntu installation and everything works as it should almost out of the box ... Now I would like to use my remote to navigate through ultrastardx which I start as an app(within XBMC).
I use linux-input-layer(devinput) with lirc(=necessary to make all buttons work).
So, if I start ultrastardx with the configuration from above my RC does not work at all but when I kill lircd before I start ultrastardx I ll get basic functions like Left, Right, Enter,... This is great but I miss two main functions Jumpto and search. To get them work and tremendously increasing the WAF I would need to send a key-sequence to ultrastardx.
What do I have to do to send such a sequence like "alt+j"?
Is there a way to kill lircd automatically before I start ultrastardy(at the moment I have to this manually )?
