Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Works Great -- Except For At Msnbc.com?
Jul 15, 2010i'm running ubuntu 8.04 with firefox 3.6.6 and the add-on shockwave flash 9.0 r277. my video works great at sites like videos, abcnews.com, and cbsnews.com. but it does not work at msnbc.com. i just get a blank, black panel with the label "msnbc.com video player" at the top.
the problem appears unique to the msnbc.com web site. any idea what it could be? i've used other machines running different versions of ubuntu and ff and have had no problems viewing msnbc.com video.

Jun 6, 2010Cheese seems to work great OOB on my HP probook 4510s using the internal webcam and OpenSuSE11.1 (11.2/11.3.6 don't install). Anyway - I would really like to have a simple way to send either the video stream or periodic snapshots out over the internet, either to a website or a chat client or? I am going to be doing a field experiment and will want folks to be able to see what I'm doing. I have set up servers before and it can get way too complicated for the amount of time I have left to get this going..

Jun 27, 2009I have used the command timidity -EFreverb=0 -iA -Os so that I can hear sound when I use tuxguitar. My problem now is that I can no longer hear sound when browsing the internet. My web browser is Firefox. By right clicking my mouse on the websites where I cannot hear sound a dialog box about adobe flash player 9 appears. There have not been any error messages.

Nov 23, 2010The problem I have is when I install 10.10 I get no wired connection my wifi works great, just no wired connection. I don't have WiFi where I am right now. It works fine when I run off the dvd , but when I install it i get nothing. I have tried static ip, reinstalling, reinstalling drivers. Don't know what else to do. I have a Dell Inspiron 1720. The ethernet is a broadcom 440x.

Feb 10, 2011No Bootup just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor after install, but LIVE CD works in 1024x768 mode? Well, I have a Sony Bravia 32xTV with HDMI input coming out of a ZOTAC nvidia type of card. The live CD will recognize the HDMI graphics card and Sony TV/monitor and thus works like Ubuntu normally does. But when I go to install to a hard drive and try to boot up I get just a Black Screen with a frozen cursor. I even have another Ubuntu 8.04 version running on the Sony Bravia TV , so no problem with TV end of things. what do I do now, oh great Ubuntu gurus out there in cyberland? what could I possibly do , what do I read, where do I go , what, where, who, how, when ,which way?

May 14, 2010Ok, so eth0 is up and working great. eth1, however, comes up with a link light, however the packet counters in ifconfig remain at 0. Appears that eth1 isn't working.
Here's my setup:
-Dell latitude CPi laptop with 2 PCMCIA network cards and no built-in ethernet.
-Slackware v11
-eth0 is connected inside my router on my 192 network. Static address with good connectivity
-eth1 is connected on the other side of my router in promiscuous mode in order to listen to the traffic coming into my network.
Troubleshooting so far: I have switched the pcmcia cards between slots and regardless of which card is in eth0 or eth1, eth0 works and eth1 does not. I have also switched the card dongle between cards as well as the ethernet cabling between the cards. With any of the combinations eth0 works like a champ but eth1 does not, so I think I've ruled out hardware problems.
Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid All Works Great - Except Software Center/synaptic

I just got Lucid installed after some minor troubles last night, but with the help of great people, I have it installed now (thank you!) and it all *ok, most* works beautifully!
However, I have been downloading/installing "Ubuntu restricted extras" , for the last 20 minutes now, and it is only at 12% .
In karmic koala, these things happened pretty quickly, but now it is just soooper slooooowww.
Before I started the restricted extras.. I installed VLC player, and that took about 15 minutes just for that. and now it is nowhere to be found!
It does not show in USC under installed software, nor does it show in synaptic..and it is in no menu, anywhere.
Speaking of synaptic...I cant get VLC, or Ubuntu restricted extras to show up, it does not 'find' them when I type their name into the search bar..it acts as if they don't exist.
I havent attempted to find, or install anything else that I had on my karmic box yet...only these 2 things, vlc and restricted extras....and both have been ..well.....painfully slow..... and vlc doesnt even seem to have installed, after it took 15-20 minutes, and said it was finished.
If this was "back to normal"...this would definitely be the best OS i have ever seen/used.

Jun 3, 2010I have a Gateway ML6721 laptop that uses a Realtek RTL8187B for wireless comms. I am very new to Ubuntu and Linux. I am trying out linux using a usb stick, 16Gb with a 4Gb persistence. If I stay in the same room as the router there is no problem. If I walk too far, I get disconnected. Works fine in windows throughout the whole house. Is there a setting I can change or do I need to use a different driver?

Apr 27, 2010I have been using a ARM device with 512MB ram and flash to send messages via Bluetooth to everyone in the proximity. I am doing this with OpenProximity (Python) and it worked for the last week, it did stop for two times but since I didn't have time to find the cause, I just rebooted it (Windows style ) and it worked again, but suddenly it stopped working again last Saturday. When I did /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart it did not say it failed or something, but when I did /etc/init.d/bluetooth status it said "bluetooth is not running ... failed!". You'll probably note that the first message is version 4.60 and the second one 4.63, this is because I tried to upgrade, but that did not work completely, but the error above is the same as first before the upgrade.
Don't know if it matters, but I am using Debian Squeeze and the output of uname -a is: Linux debian 2.6.32.2 #1 PREEMPT Fri Dec 18 22:54:28 MST 2009 armv5tel GNU/Linux. Hope someone know how this could happen suddenly, and even better, knows how to fix it
EDIT: Forgot to say, I am using a SENA Parani UD100 Bluetooth USB Adapter which uses the Toshiba Bluetooth stack.
UPDATE: It won't crash until the Bluetooth stick is inserted, so it should be a driver problem?

Sep 8, 2011I can play sound files with aplay, esdplay, and vlc, but I don't get any sound from iceweasel and chromium.
I installed a squeeze base system (without gnome and without the standard system utilities), then added (using --no-install-recommends) xserver-xorg-core, xdm, fluxbox, alsa-base, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, iceweasel, chromium-browser. Here I checked for sound and there was none from the browsers. I have since installed vlc, esound-clients, alsaplayer-esd, gstreamer0.10-alsa, and other software that didn't look sound-related and didn't change the symptoms.
Setting ICEWEASEL_DSP to "aoss" or "esddsp" doesn't help. Neither does "chmod -R 777 /dev/{audio,dsp,midi,mixer,snd}". snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss are loaded. Both my account and root are in group "audio". Running the browsers as root doesn't help.

In case it makes any difference, all of this happens in a qemu-kvm virtual machine with an emulated es1370 soundcard. Same with sb16 soundcard.
I would prefer not to install everything vaguely related to sound in the repositories in the hope of things fixing themselves. That's just ugly, plus I have only 200MB free space left.
OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Make Timidity Recognize Bank Variations?
Mar 5, 2011I have Timidity++ 2.12.0 in Windows and a Soundfont customized by myself named Collection.sf2. everything I had to write in Timidity.cfg file was:

And just with that Timidity recognizes all presets in all banks of my soundfont. (This soundfont has more than 600 presets in more than 30 different banks.) I tried Timidity++ 2.13 for Windows with the same soudnfont and cfg file and it didn't work. 2.13 version recognized only the 127 presets of the first bank. so I went back to 2.12.0 version. The same now happens when I installed Timidity in Opensuse. etc/timidity.cfg file points to /usr/share/timidity/timidity.cfg file. In this last file I wrote the following:
dir /home/fernando/Soundfonts
soundfont Collection.sf2
I connected Rosegarden to Timidity and tried presets from several banks that use to be recognized automatically when I connect Rosegarden to Qsynth. But in Timidity no matter what bank I choose the sound comes only from the presets of the first bank. I tried the same connecting vkybd (a virtual midi keyboard found in multimedia repo) to timidity and even if i choose bank 2, 8, 16... the sound is always from instrumens of bank 0. it seems that Timidity 2.12 was the only version that recognized bank variations automatically just like Qsynth does. I could not succeed in this in any later version, neither in Windows nor in Linux.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rosegarden - Start Without Jackd?
Jul 14, 2010I want to use rosegarden purely for midi (i.e not audio, recording synths etc.) as my midi keyboard already has loads of great tones. When jackd is running, it really slows rosegardens performance, and the trouble is with the new rosegarden (10.04) jack is started automatically when you start rosegarden. Is there a way to prevent this? Please help, rosegarden is a great app but this is rather annoying. Uninstalling jack would be bad because other things I need use jack.

Jul 8, 2010Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 sound now only works some of the time. One boot it will work perfectly and another boot it wont, the gnome sound mixer basically says that it can't detect a sound card.
I've compared lsmod when it does vs doesn't work and I've noticed...

May 31, 2011I have sound if I use aplay or start totem using sudo but neither have sound if I try aplay or totem as ordinary user. The groups command shows my user name is a member of the audio and video groups. If I look at the /etc/group file it also shows pulse as a member of audio group.
This is a command line install from the 10.04 Alternate CD to which I installed xorg, icewm, gdm, nautilus, synaptic, totem, firefox, gstreamer, alsa, pulse, and others. Every thing works except the user audio. Totem will show videos but no sound. Totem will play MP3 music files (show the cover art and the progress) but no sound. But it all works ok, good sound, if I start Totem as root.
What am I missing? I don't expect in depth help with this installation but thought maybe something would just pop out at someone?

Jul 12, 2010I want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?
[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]
What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?

Feb 8, 2010Recently I installed Renoise demo and followed their install instructions from the Renoise 2.1 quickstart guide. It said if you get any errors to do the following:
Configuring Realtime Threads:
If you get a warning message when you start Renoise, read this section. To allow Renoise to create realtime threads, which are required for low latencies with ALSA or JACK, you have to
edit the /etc/security/limits.conf file. A realtime kernel does NOT help here, it does not set the required options automatically! To enable RT thread creation via PAM open the /etc/security/limits.conf file in a text editor as root (or sudo). Then somewhere near the end of the file add:
YOURUSERNAME - rtprio 99
YOURUSERNAME - nice -10
Replace YOURUSERNAME with your username. You can discover this with the 'whoami' command.
Alternatively you could also create a group named "Audio", add your user to that group, and use '@Audio'
instead of 'YOURUSERNAME'.
Save the file. Log Out. Login. At this point it should be working. To verify that it works, launch Renoise, select ALSA and make sure the 'Realtime threads' option is on. You will get a friendly warning like the one above. If RT creation failed. Try again.
Jack Configuration
If you don't have "Jack Control (JACK Audio Connection Kit)", we recommend that you install it.
Jack Control allows easy Audio/MIDI routing with an intuitive GUI. On Ubuntu:
$ sudo apt-get install jackd qjackctl
Now you can start it from [Applications] -> [Audio] -> [Jack Control].
Click the "Setup" button, and set following values:
Change the "Priority" value to 89. (If you use realtime kernel, also add check mark beside "Realtime")
Change the "Periods/buffer" value to 3 or more.
In addition, please configure latency and other settings according to the needs of your system. Now I don't have sound where and when I used to, for example: songbird no longer plays sound tho it plays the track and no sound in web browsers aswell, like ..... plays but no sound. It has to be something simple because audio for everything was fine until editing that one file and installing that audio jack program.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Does Not Work With Headphones But Works Otherwise?
Mar 17, 2010I am using Ubuntu 9.10. My sound works fine unless I have headphones plugged in. I've tried 2 sets of headphones, and it doesn't work with either set, so it's not the headphones. The volume is not muted (it's at 100%) for the headphones either in alsamixer. How can I diagnose and fix this?

Apr 8, 2010On Ubuntu lucid 10.04 Beta , I can see on Sound Preferences -->Input Tab , No input level sliding moving where input volume is 100% and device for sound input is Internal Audio Analog stereo. That's why I am unable to record on Sound Recorder. But the sound works where I can listen to music or video but not sound recording.
