Software :: Trouble Finding Nvidia 64 Bit Driver That Compiles With GCC 4.3
Jun 21, 2009
I just installed the latest SimplyMepis 8.02, 64 bit and I can only find a driver that compiles with GCC 4.1. This is, of course, not accepted in the installation process, so it shuts down.If someone reading this knows of one, please direct me to a 64 bit Nvidia driver for a GFX260 chipped (XFX) card that will run with GCC 4.3.

I'm having a lot of trouble finding a good Linux Distro that will work with my Toshiba A505-S6020. Here are some specs
i5-430M Intel Processor
4 GB RAM
NVidia Graphics Card
Realtek Network Adapter
One of the big problems I'm having is with the Network Adapter. It won't work with Ubuntu or any Ubuntu based distros. Backtrack 4 won't even start for me (there's a problem with the ACPI, and I'm not sure how to turn it off on Backtrack). Is there any distribution that I won't have to mess with the Kernels too much (I tried Gentoo, but that was a bit over my head)

I'm having a teensy problem with installing something. About time, too, everything was going so smoothly. Anyway, I'm trying to install the ATI Proprietary Linux Drivers so this new video card (well, I say "new" though it's actually a rather old card, a Radeon x300, but still better than my embedded gpu) that I have will be stable whenever I play some games, and I get one particular problem I'm having trouble getting around..
I really don't know how to fix this. Completely clueless, in fact, except for maybe reinstalling XFree86 or changing the PATH env variable to something else, but I don't know what to change it to. Hm...

I'm having some graphics driver trouble on my Lenovo Thinkpad T500. I tried getting the ATI Proprietary driver to work (fglrx) but everytime I boot my X just crashes. Now I'm trying to use the open source driver, but i dont think its working becaues a) It doesn't detect that an external monitor is plugged in (for dual-view) and b) when i run glxinfo i get a "Error of failed request: BadRequest" message.

i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.

The freeze's on my machine only appears when i monitor the temperature of
the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.

I am experiencing the following issue. After enabling SLI and PhysX in windows vista, my dual boot fedora 10 does not see the NVIDIA driver.
Doing: cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/0 I get? in the VGA bios for both cards.
I disabled both SLI and PhysX in vista, but the problem persists. I powerdown and unplugged the rig for several hours without results.
Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Q9300
Board: MSI P7N Diamond
CARD0: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
CARD1: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
RAM : 4 Gbytes OCZ gold PC6400 (4 x 1 Gbytes)
PSU : Thermaltake SLI ready 850 W
It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.
I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.

Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.

I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results. The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.

There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed. The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

How do I check if I'm using the Nouveu driver or the Nvidia Binary driver? I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? Actually, scratch that last sentence. I just did lspci -v and got this output:

At work, we use Ubuntu to compile large numbers of C, C++, Java, and AIDL files. My system is a Core i7 Quad-Core with 8GiB of RAM. Prior to this install, it ran Ubuntu 9.10, 32-bit. A basic compile took roughly 45 minutes.I just did a clean install with (x)Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. After setting up the build environment to allow 32-bit libraries (mobile development), a compile took roughly an hour:15.

I'm developing a new command to be executed on the grub shell. However for some reason the .c file I added doesn't get compiled. How do I notify make of this new file? When you type in the make command, a load of gcc commands come up, where do these come from?
gcc -Ikern -I./kern -I. -I./include -I./gnulib -I./include -Wall -W -DGRUB_LIBDIR="/usr/local/lib/`echo grub/i386-pc | sed 's,x,x,'`" -DLOCALEDIR="" -DGRUB_MACHINE_PCBIOS=1 -DGRUB_UTIL=1 -MD -c -o grub_setup-kern_file.o kern/file.c
I know this because I typed in random letters but the compiler continued on. However tried it on an existing file it came up with a compile time error.

I have a new system I built this week. I have the nvidia drivers installed, but desktop effects, googleearth and Quake4 all try to load the /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 from mesa-libGL and fail to start.I have two other machines, both with nvidia video, and don't have the problem with them. I've looked for differences on the systems, but haven't located anything so far.

Does anyone know where I can get this driver: bcm4329.ko ?
I've checked Broadcom's website, they seem to have drivers for everything except the 4329.
Another question; if I have a bcm4329.ko file that has previously worked on a Nexus One, is it guaranteed to still work (on a Nexus One), regardless of the kernel number?

I just downloaded Ubuntu Studio on my laptop and I can't get the wireless to work. I think it's because I need a driver; the Atheros AR928x. Whatever the driver is, it works with the pretty unpopular Musix distribution, because wireless worked instantly when I got that. I switched because it was old and slow.
