Mar 26, 2010I need to find a Broadcom BCM4312 driver that has a .inf file extension. I cannot find one anywhere. I need to atleast once use wireless inside of ubuntu.

Jun 19, 2010installing the Broadcom Wireless LAN driver. I am working from an HP Pavillion dv6-2 2150us (if that has any relevance). The problem seems to be with the installation method I have used. I burned the ISO file properly onto a CD, but I did not install through the disk boot-up method. The reason for this is because I couldn't partition my HDD correctly (I am trying to dual boot with the Windows 7 OS already installed). So, I installed Ubuntu via the option from the CD Installer through Windows 7. I am not sure how to go about getting and installing the Broadcom Wireless LAN driver onto Ubuntu.

Oct 18, 2010My HP Pavilion dm4 notebook has the Broadcom bcm4313 and worked with the proprietary Broadcom driver provided with Ubuntu 10.04 but did not work with the corresponding driver provided with Ubuntu 10.10. The solution that worked for me (for a while) was to install "broadcom-sta-common" and its dependencies using Synaptic. After enabling the proprietary driver (System > Administration > Additional Drivers) and rebooting, wireless worked. I even shared this on this post. chargersfan420 get his Broadcom card functional again.
What changed to break it? Well, wireless had worked for several days, so I felt that I had solved the wireless problem. Now it was time to find a solution to unlock my BIOS settings. I successfully used PCCMOSCleaner to clear the password. After that, no more wireless. (Note to dm4 users: Apparently HP puts a password on the BIOS settings and makes it available only if you boot into the factory-installed Windows 7 and retrieve it. Of course I never booted into Windows 7 before upgrading the machine to Linux, deleting both the Windows partition and HP's hidden recovery partition.)
I uninstalled all the Broadcom stuff and reinstalled it all. Now I appear to have wl working, and b43 and ssb blacklisted, but network manager is not seeing any wireless connections available.
My Hardware: HP Pavilion dm4-1063cl My OS: Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit (clean install)

Jul 22, 2010I am trying to install Nvidia card driver. The driver has got a .run extension and i don't know how to handle that, I've tried to extract like i did with .tar files but didn't work. I clicked the file while in X window and it opens a terminal and runs for a sec and said i have to exit X window and run as root. so i exit X window and login form CUI, navigate to the folder and type "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.08-pkg1.run" but nothing happens, so i add sudo and tried but All i get is "NVIDIA command not found". I guess this is not a problem but i just don't know how to handle the .run file. please help. I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx LTS. I' ve checked other threads and found some issues regarding Nvidia drivers but i wanna know how to handle the .run files.I've windows xp, 7, Puppy Linux and Lucid Lynx on my desktop and whenever i repair windows the GRUB got damaged. Is there a way to recover the loader without reinstalling the whole linux OS like getting into recovery console and fixboot,, fixmbr for restoring windows?

Apr 8, 2010I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results.The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.

Apr 28, 2011As you might have noticed the new broadcom driver in 11.04 is not working anymore, but you can use the old one from 10.10 if you follow these steps:
1. First you need to download the old broadcom driver (10.10) here:

2. Now it's time to delete the current driver:
open the console:
sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status
search for "bcmwl-kernel-source" and delete the lines that are related to the driver.
3. Install the driver you have downloaded before by double-clicking the .deb file
4. Go to the Synpatic-Package-Manager and search for "bcmwl-kernel-source" again. Click on on it and go to "package" and make sure you lock it, so it won't be updated.

Jan 23, 2010I just deleted my windows XP and installed Ubuntu 9.10 earlier this morning. I used wired connection to get drivers for my wireless network card.
When I did lspci, the very last line states:
Network Controller: Broadcom Coporation BCM4311 902.11b/g WLAN(rev 01)
I used the System -> Administration -> Hardware Driver and found 2 drivers. I have tried them both to connect to my D-Link Router. Neither of which worked.
For Broadcom B43 Driver, the wireless is able to detect wireless networks. However, it fails to establish connection.
For Broadcom STA Driver, the wireless cannot even detect wireless networks available.
What is the issue here and how do I resolve it so that I am able to connect onto the internet wirelessly?

May 23, 2010I decided to use the STA wireless driver in my Ubuntu 10.04, and my connection actually became faster! Only problem is that it keeps on asking for my wifi password. I didn't have this kind of problem when I was using the b43 wireless driver - it just automatically connects everytime I reboot. how I can make my laptop stop asking for my password everytime I reboot?

Oct 16, 2010After trying to make audio output work on Lenovo b560 notebook I finally succeeded but the wireless stopped working. The driver was removed. I tried to follow the instructions from Broadcom http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt and it started showing the driver in admin - drivers, it shows that it is activated but not in use, but once I get to this point

Ubuntu Networking :: Rfkill Does Nothing Under Broadcom STA Driver?
May 3, 2011I've been seeing a lot of people checking for hardware and software blocks using the rfkill command. I can't seem to get it to do anything at all on my Broadcom "4321AG"/"4328" wireless using the Broadcom STA driver. Of course, I have an old-fashioned hardware switch on the front of my laptop.
Here is some information on my working wireless setup (that rfkill can't seem to see):

When I try rfkill list all, it does nothing, just returns me to my BASH prompt. The wifi, wlan, bluetooth, and wwan identifiers also seem to do nothing with rfkill list. It looks to me like it "hooked" IRQ19 in the BIOS, and the wireless does work quite stably (although it does need several seconds to auto-reestablish wireless when Linux goes to "sleep," say overnight).
This page doesn't really tell me much more than rfkill did with no parameters:

Is this just because I have an electromechanical wireless switch, or is it a 64-bit problem, or...
EDIT: Oh yes, sudo rfkill list all also just returns me to my BASH prompt without any whistles or bells (after entering a password)...
General :: Add A File Extension To A Bunch Of File Names?
Oct 20, 2010I have a considerable number of files in a subdirectory (some fascinating old military clips from archive.org - search on Big Picture if interested). Anyhow, I am downloading them using Internet Download Manager running in an XP virtual machine in VMWare on my Ubuntu 10.04 PC (due to the queuing, restart and speed capabilities of IDM). But I digress - the files are being saved on the host (Samba share) without a file extension. So I have a collection of files with names like

I wish to add the extension ".mp4" In Windows this is simply done with the command

This of course does not work in Linux. I have researched the Linux rename command and reviewed a lot of examples. However, I have not found a way to add an extension to a batch of files which are named with no extension to start with. The spaces in the file names also seem to present an issue. At the moment I am renaming them from the Windows VM while they are sitting on the Samba share using the ancient File Manager program from Windows NT which works great on XP. I have experimented with the file rename facility in Gnome Commander however, it does not seem to want to do something so simple.

Feb 4, 2010I am using Linux Mint 8 Helena x64 Edition on Dell Studio 15 laptop which has Dell 1520 Wireless-N Mini Card. It does work when I boot from Live CD of Helena, connect to a wired network and download & install the proprietary drivers when prompted. But on the installed system, I am unable to activate the Broadcom STA driver. I tried completely removing and then reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source and dkms packages from package manager.When I go to Administration -> Hardware Drivers and click on Activate for Broadcom driver, at first there used to be a window which said Downloading and it used to go away after few seconds and nothing used to happen. Then I installed few updates. At the time of writing, I have installed all the available updates. Now after clicking on Activate, I get this error :
