Can do nothing with the PC. New install of 10.04 and was prompted to install Nvidia driver. Did so. Rebooted, now have nothing except a thin line at top of screen. How can I remove this driver when I see nothing?

Except that this time, no! I turn on my pc this afternoon and more 3d effects. I run "Nvidia X Server Settings" which tells me I do not use the nvidia driver and must run as root the command "nvidia-xconfig," what I do. I restart X and no display at all, only the prompt in text mode!

Is there anyway to boot in safe mode. I boot Fedora with GRUB2 and there isnt any failsafe entry for it. I have blacklisted nv driver already.

Using the regular driver (whichever that is) the picture displays flawlessly, but when I'm using the NVIDIA driver it displays really weird. URL...As you can see the top and the right of the picture is missing, and there is a large black bar to the left of it.Since it only does this with the NVIDIA driver I guess the driver is at fault here. The graphics card is a 8400GS and I'm running Xubuntu 10.10. The HDTV has a native resolution of 1366x768, and I've connected to it using HDMI.
I have tried messing around with overscan compensation in nvidia-settings, but it didn't help much.What can I do to fix this?
I cannot find the correct command to uninstall the Nvidia blob, can anyone point me to the right one that removes the latest drivers?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to Fedora 13, and am trying to use the experimental Nvidia driver to enable Compiz desktop effects. The driver appears to be working correctly, but when I enable desktop effects, my text/icons/option menus are inverted (mirrored on both x and y axis's). Can anyone help me solve this issue? am i going to have to go to the proprietary Nvidia graphics driver?

When there is a new Linux kernel, or a newer Ubuntu version, will I need to uninstall that driver before upgrading? Will having this driver cause any special installation issues during upgrade (such as the need to reinstall the driver after upgrading)? I am using 9.10 through Wubi.

i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
The driver has crashed X and before I had a chance to find RPMfusion instructions on dealing with initrd, I removed the package just to keep X running.Uninstalling the package does not restore kernel and Xorg operation. I am still in VESA mode.Although they claim they don't put stuff in non-standard places and use RPM, still there is something left over, as nuoveau driver no longer loads.Now that system configuration is all over the place, it is not clear what they actually changed or replaced.

Using squeeze with a GeForce4 MX 440 video card (NVIDIA) I have a monitor (4/3 aspect ratio, 1024x768 usually), and a TV connected via S-video After installing the NVIDIA driver using the NVIDIA binaries I managed to have a cloned twin screen configuration working.
However, the monitor is (wrongly) detected as having size 1824x768 (aspect ratio is widescreen) Using system monitor, I can set the correct size, but only for one session; besides, the login screen too is messed up the xorg.conf file seems right: proper resolution modes are set; xorg.0.log too
I went back to Suse 11.2, it comes with the 'nv' driver for my NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro (64 MB) and I'm getting some slow performance on browser display and sometimes video playing. Not always, I recently saw a 2 hr long movie on Blue Ray resolution, so the problem is not hardware, it's software. I saw several links here on how to install other drivers and a 1-click install link on this page but my question is, since this is an old card... which driver is the best for this card ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThere is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.
Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.
Currently using Nvidia driver version 195.36.31, it's the version that works with Nvidia-kernel-dkms, would updating Nvidia driver to the current 275.09.07 driver version break my setup?

I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? I have trouble installing my display driver in ubuntu 10.10. Almost spent a week, still could not get it done
my display is ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
I've tried linux many times in the past, and I'm always irritated to the point of formatting it, shredding the disk, and cursing it while enjoying my windows. Anyhow, (for some reason beyond me) I'm trying it again. Let me start off with the fact that I am very very irritated with how difficult this is becoming (why the hell can't nvidia just make a driver I can install without all of this crap?). OK, so I know how to cd to a directory, login as root. Any time I try to install the nvidia driver, it tells me I need to close X. I've tried going into the recovery terminal and it tells me this. I've also tried the command "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" and then it just takes me to a black screen.I can't do anything from there but push ctrl+alt+delete to restart.So,if anyone can give me simple steps that would be great. I don't want to learn how to use the OS, I just want to install this driver so I can read text and more than half of my monitor is displayed on,I'm on linux hardy heron 8.04

Nvidia Geforce GT 325M 1 GB
HDD 500 GB, 5400 rpm
Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit
(Windows 7 64 bit)
I installed the newest nvidia driver(260.19.21), using the guide on this site:

And I tried many other methods(System, Administration, Additional Drivers), other driver versions and so on.
The installation succeeds, but when i'm trying to reboot it wont start gdm. It will boot in Text-only(CTRL+ ALT +F1), and it won't let me use gdm. Restarting gdm, startx, all of them won't work. The only way is to boot in recovery and restore the default xorg.conf file.
Nvidia card is working under windows, so it isn't broken.
when i active the recommended version the ubuntu is freeze !!

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running an ubuntu 10.10 with an Intel i3 on a Gigabyte motherboard. I use it mainly as an HTPC, so it is connected (via HDMI) to a Samsung LCD TV (LA40A450C1V).
Do I need to install a specific display driver? if so - how do i do that?
I'm somewhat new to Fedora but not Linux in general. I went to install the nvidia driver as per any instructions I found on the internet that yielded results. I typed sudo yum install kmod-nvidia and eventually got a driver, blacklisted nouveau, restarted, and finally got compiz and all my desktop effects.
The problem was when I played Minecraft, which for those who don't know is a game, from a .jar file. After ~5 minutes of playing something happens and everything freezes. Video completely stops but I still have mouse control and sound(at least for anything already running). Clicking stuff does nothing and no hotkeys work to bring up anything at all. I end up having to do a reset by hand to get anything done. Turning off desktop effects didn't help.
Why is this? Did I install the wrong driver, even though kmod-nvidia should find the right one on it's own? nvidia 8800 GT is my card. Could it be the java program screwing things up royally? I can't remember if the program worked fine on it's own before the driver install, but uninstalling the driver now causes the game to fail on launch, which I guess makes sense but can't figure out if it's simply the lack of driver or if removing the driver screwed something else up. I might just reinstall fedora and start from scratch again, but before I did that I wanted to find out if I'm just installing the wrong driver and can simply find teh right one to fix all of this.
This is my first day with Umbuntu and my first post here at the forums. I bought a Dell Pentium 4 with a fresh install of Umbuntu 9.10 on it. Worked well until I decided to do something a newbie shouldn't do and install a graphics card and drivers. The graphics card worked just fine until the drivers were installed and I tried to reboot the system. Now it no longer boots. Some specifics for you.
Since my time with Ubuntu is limited to hours, the nomenclature will probably be wrong. But I will try to get the point across. The card is a EVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. On first start up with this card the computer functioned fine. I went to a place where you could change the screen options. There were three selections and I don't remember the names (idiot that I am). I selected the middle one. The OS stated that in order to utilize all the capabilities of nvidia graphics cards blah, blah, blah, a driver would need to be downloaded and activated. No name, just a driver. OK, do it (sounds kinda windows like). The download seemed to go OK, but now I needed to reboot to activate the driver.
Now: Ubuntu logo comes up. Screen goes to a text screen that says:

This screen flashes and does not take input from the keyboard or mouse. Next, I removed the graphics card and used the on-board graphics. Same result with faster flashing. What have I done? Apparently Ubuntu and Linux in general don't have a system recovery option? I read something about the GRUB menu, but the system flasher GRUB loading for half a second and then is on to locking up. I can't seem to get to a GRUB menu. What a way to finish the day.
My new laptop (ASUS N71Jv) refuses to install Ubuntu 9.10 - it just produces a black screen. I finally managed to get it on there somehow by installing it in safe graphics mode, so now I have to stare at 1024x768. NVIDIA has a new driver (195.36.0 available that may support my graphics card. When I try to install the executable nVidia driver from a terminal, it rightfully complains that X server is still active. Ctrl-alt-f1 or sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop produce a black screen and a frozen cursor, /sbin/init 3 does nothing.
So what I want to do is simply install the nvidia driver while not being in gnome.
I suspect that my xorg.conf file does not allow anything but 1024x768 (safe graphics mode). It's very frustrating. Any ideas how I can install the driver while being in simple failsafe command line mode or something?
I've tried the 'current' proprietary Nvidia drivers in the repository and also the newest from Nvidias home page. Both of them gives me, regardless of what theme I choose, ugly windows. The only things that are shown correct according to the theme is the minimise, maximise, close buttons (correct colour and form). Everything else is grey and ugly. I have successfully activated 'Normal' visual effects, so composite/opengl seems to work.The only window that is according to the theme is System/Preferences/Appearance!?
