Ubuntu Multimedia :: 4870x2 Catalyst Driver \ Finding The Proper Configuration Of OS Version And Driver Version?
Apr 8, 2010
I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results. The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on an old small form factor PC with an AMD Sempron 2400, 1GB RAM, and an nVidia 5200 graphics card 128MB. OK, so a low-spec machine (but that's the great thing about Linux right? Don't need high-end h/w) but it works just fine, except that it can't play full HD (1920x1080) MPEG-4 video. Very jerky and lots of dropped frames. Same in both Movie Player and VLC.
I can't afford to increase the RAM and as it's a SFF I can't just swap the mobo and CPU for something faster so I'm wondering whether getting a higher spec graphics card would make any difference?I'm using the nVidia proprietary binary driver (latest version) and searching the forums I found a post where someone said that the nVidia driver needs at least a 512MB card for HD video.A colleague has a higher spec nVidia card (7600 IIRC) that he'll sell me, but before I spend any money, is this likely to improve things? How much does the graphics card affect performance, or is it simply a case of the machine overall just isn't high enough spec?

I have already downloaded and installed ati's catalyst for my ati mobility radeon 4570 (at least i think so, since there is the ATI catalyst control center in the system-> preferences menu). The problem is that i want to upgrade its version from 10.9 to 10.10. and since i want to firstly uninstall the previous version,I get this:
Code:
alexandros@alexandros-laptop:/usr/share/ati$ sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh
sh: Can't open ./fglrx-uninstall.sh
The uninstall.sh doesn't exist.

I can see my USB devices by
Code:

00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02)
However, the speed I copied from one USB device to anther (both are USB 2.0 ) is around 4.4M/second, which seems to be very slow. I'm wondering if the USB driver is not powerful enough. By the way, I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 .

I have just installed Slackware 13.0 64 bit on my laptop. I am trying to get my wireless card (Broadcom BCM4318) to work. It is dual boot with Windows XP 32 bit. I tried the ndiswrapper and everything seemed to go okay but when I ran ndiswrapper -l it said it was the wrong driver. Then I realized I was using the 32 bit driver from my windows install. Is there a 64 bit driver available. I can't seem to find one. I have searched the broadcom site but I guess this is too old for them to support. I previously used Zenwalk 32 bit on the laptop and ndiswrapper worked great. Should I be able to find a 64 bit driver or can I get the 32 bit to work? Do I need to go back to a 32 bit OS? I found the proper driver using google, downloaded, installed with ndiswrapper, rebooted and everything works. It connected automatically.

I realize that Canonical is not responsible for the Catalyst driver, but I can't seem to operate outside of the Ubuntu Classic (no effects) mode for 64 bit Natty, and I was curius if anyone else had encountered or resolved this.
When I upgraded from 10.10 (I was using the fglrx package), xorg would immediately crash. I was able to reach the gdm screen only using recovery mode. I uninstalled the fglrx package, and now I can boot into Ubuntu Classic (no effects) mode only (no other desktop will work) using the open-source driver at no greater than 1280x1024.
When I try to re-install the catalyst driver using aptitude or Administration->Additional Drivers, the installation fails:
(jockey.log: WARNING: modinfo for module fglrx failed: ERROR: modinfo: could not find module fglrx)
Similarly, package generation from the AMD page fails:
Installation complete.

Xubuntu 9.04 installs the drivers for my wireless pci card on my desktop perfectly. Whenever I update to a newer version, the wireless disappears. I would like to use 10.10 but obviously internet is very important.
Can I tell it to keep the same driver? I actually don't really know what the specific driver it is.

I know how to do this in windows so it would be good to be able to check driver versions in linux too. Im on debian 8.1 with intel HD4400 graphics.

I'm trying to setup bonding on two GigE cards. Things seem find but when I test out a couple different file transfers on samba, I'm getting a kernel panic. In the process I'm trying to update the e1000e driver (Intel 82574L). The problem I'm having with this is after I reboot, the old e1000e driver is getting loaded.
Here's some background. Installed is 10.04, upgraded and dist-upgraded:
Code:
Code:
Below I note "1.0.2-k2" for driverversion.
Code:
So I downloaded and updated e1000e to version 1.1.19 by following their directions, first backing up the old driver:
Code:
And then I uninstall the old one, install the new one per README file
Code:
After restarting networking, my lshw is now (note that driverversion=1.1.19-NAPI now):
Code:
So here comes the problem and I must be missing something here - after I reboot, the old 1.0.2-k2 driverversion is loaded.
Code:

I have the HD4850 and, I wanted to know if it is possible to use the CLI to see which version of OpenGL is the latest version I can use according to my driver. If it's not possible via the CLI then, what's the next best way? (I can't find a website for the radeon driver listing the latest OpenGL support per supported card).

I attempted to run amarok from the menu and found it would never start there was no activity, I then tried to start it from the command line and I recieved this error..
Version mismatch detected between the NVIDIA libGL.so
and libGLcore.so shared libraries (libGL.so version:
195.36.31; libGLcore.so version: 195.36.24).
Please try reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.
This is a fresh install of Fedora 13, the kmod-nvidia drivers were just fixed I assume cause I tried to install them for a few days and they would fail. Well I guess they finally fixed the Nvidia drivers for 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64 but it has broken amarok..

I'm using a remix of F14 called Fusion Linux. It's all the same as fedora14. It's come preinstalled with xorg x11 nouveau driver. So, i'm not using Nvidia driver. Now, the problem is that the graphics in wine application are really poor. Fonts appear to be really hazy. See this image to get me better: [URL].. In earlier version of fedora and wine, i used nvidia driver. Graphics used to be good at that time.

Im having a battle for quite some time now with lastest intel driver now and wondering if someone has solution. Ive checked :[URL].. and i decided to have exact same version of everything listed in there installed on the system.
I have few questions since i manually builded xorg-server 1.8 im wondering what packages are dependent for x11 to be upgraded so everything run smoothly for xserver 1.8. are those xf86-input* and xf86-video* the only one or there are other packages that i have to get rebuilded? the second question: im wondering if im the only one for that having a problem of that lastest driver dosent work for me, for the purpose i rebuilded the driver and libdrm 2.4.20 with kms enabled once i installed xorg-xserver 1.8.0
heres log problem:

What is the best place to get an updated nVidia video driver for CentOS 5.5? Is there a CentOS package available that will update it? Or is it best to download it directly from nVidia? Also, I do not have an internet connection on the machine, so it will have to be a manual download and installation.

I install security updates - did so and ended up with a copy of fedora that goes into a loop. I suspect the prob is the driver to my video adapter. To run, I need to interrupt grub with an escape. It then shows me two choices the bad one 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686 and the old good one 2.6.31.5.- 127.fc12.i686 It defaults to the bad one, I change it to the good one and tell it ot proceed. this is inconvenient
I see that in /boot/grub/grub.conf the 2 systems are described I beleive that if I merely edit that file, taking out the refernece to the bad one, I will be ok That will leave the bad one on the disk but at least I wont have to go thru the ritual of interrupting grub. If I want to delete the bad one - after I've taken care of the grub.conf file, what do I do?

I just installed Ubuntu amd64 10.04 on my Gateway LT3114u Netbook. The video card on this device is ATI Radeon X1270. For some reason the automatic driver installed by Ubuntu is not working perfectly, I noticed that because: When the "Appearance Preferences" - "Visual Effects" are set to "Normal" or "Extra", some very weird lines and images apear, and I cant read any word as the characters are messy. But if this setting is "None", the system works just fine!
Also, I tried to install the ATI driver and the "ATI Catalyst Control Center" and when I try to run it, it says the ATI driver is not working ok. Any tips on how to solve it? Please consider Im a begginer for Ubuntu.
