Software :: Help Finding Correct Version Of Yakuake For Slackware 13.37
Jul 12, 2011
I am a complete noob in the Linux community, having JUST installed my first Linux distro on my PC (that being Slackware 13.37).That having been said, please be patient with my TOTAL confusion is this regard : How do I determine which version of a package I need to download (in this example, I will use Yakuake, a program I AM trying to find at the moment!). I have done searches on the internet of the type"Yakuake for Slackware", etc., and I have always found results that I believed were a link to the correct version. However, when I finally have the package downloaded (I have downloaded BOTH source packages as
well as the build app.), they are always for a DIFFERENT VERSION!
This is most frustrating...; is there a "listing" of different packages that are compatible with a specific distro / version? I realize that, in many cases, I may require a newer version of a library, etc., but again, how do I determine this ahead of time, before I bother downloading the actual app. I wish to install? I can use another example - I attempted to install OpenOffice; I began by searching for OpenOffice for Slackware / KDE (as some sources indicated that Gnome was the required gui for this package...).I found a site with an install cd .iso that was supposed to be multi-platform KDE compatible, but NONE of the versions would install on Slackware 13.37... - you get my point?
I have installed Kubuntu Lucid x86 10.4 LTS for the first time. Has anyone got a link that explains how KPackageKit gets the IP address of the repositories? I can install packages using sudo apt-get install xxx OK . KpackageKit tells me I have updates from the repositories. I can select them all and apply , but I get an error that it can't find the repository under a 192.168.100.129:8080 address . Which is not a surprise . I am using mirror.optus.net as a repository and can ping it fine on the command line. So is there somewhere else that KPackageKit maps IP addreses ? I have tried another mirror mirror.aarnet.edu.au and got similar results. My local sub-net is not 192.168.100 and have tried setting fixed IP on the local sub-net and different DHCP addresses and still the same error.
I have a new system I built this week. I have the nvidia drivers installed, but desktop effects, googleearth and Quake4 all try to load the /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 from mesa-libGL and fail to start.I have two other machines, both with nvidia video, and don't have the problem with them. I've looked for differences on the systems, but haven't located anything so far.
How do i find the correct path to my cd-rom drive? I want to install office 2007 using wine and I have used the programmerfish tutorial and now have to do the following:type wine /path to cd/setup.exe but I cannot seem to find the correct path.
-I tried /dev/sr0/setup.exe but it returned an error. -I tried /dev/sr0/media/setup.exe. returned the same error. -I tried /dev/media/setup.exe. Also no good.
I thought using df would help me and there i found /dev/sr0/ would be my cd-rom drive. Dunno it this correct though.
I'm looking for the ISO that I download to put on a flashdrive. Maybe I'm stupid, but every link mentions 'CD/DVD' and it throws me off. i'm just trying to get the horrid Windows 7 off of my new Hp mini 110 and Ubuntu in its place. my old netbook had 10.04 on it. but i think i want to give 10.10 a try. so thats the one im looking for.
I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results. The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.
I have a new DEL INSPIRON M5030. I've tryed to install several different versions of ubuntu, 10.04 installed and worked but it just did'nt seem right. Can someone recomend a version that workes well on this laptop, or suggest how to correct the 10.04 version that kinda works?
Firefox 3.6.16 I recently installed Fedora 14. I get this message when I browse to some web pages: Code: Cannot play media.You do not have the correct version of the flash player. I have installed the flash-plugin. And has been installed to the following directory;
I am in need of an Ubuntu that can run on a single board computer. It has AMD Geode GX-MMX 500MHz processor, 500MB RAM and a flash card module. I need a minimal ubuntu install without any GUI. I tried live CD Ubuntu 11.04 desktop edition, runs fine, but after its installation on a USB flash drive, the system does not boot. The server edition 6.06 looks for a CD drive which the system does not have.Which type/version of Ubuntu would be best suited for this kind of environment?
I'm new to the yum installation route and am looking forward to getting some experience using it, however, I am working to build a Nagios server through yum and have run into difficulties meeting the dependencies. (I'd previously installed from source on a different server though I'd been warned is a bad thing so I am trying to make nice and go this route but have run into snags right off...) The dependency hurdle I'm trying to overcome is getting to GLIBC2_4 from my version of 2.3.
I've read through a number of posts where people have had issues getting glib updated or gcc installed correctly. This is pretty much a new installation of CentOS (VM cloned off an earlier install that was taken just after going through the GUI setup). As far as I have gotten is 'yum update' which updated the kernel and openssl.
I have installed NetBeans on Windows7 with c++ enabled but I can not write c++ code because it doesn't have c++ libraries. I have installed netBeans on my Fedora and in there it works fine because there is c++ libraries built with it. My questions are, Where is c++ libraries on Fedora (The destination)? Can c++ libraries in linux be copied to Windows? Will it work? If yes how? If not where can I download c++ libraries to windows7?
I have CentOS 5.5 installed on my Dell D600. This release includes SAMBA 3.0. Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?
A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0
I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.
Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?
I'm new here as I'm new to openSUSE. Having used Mandriva 2006 for years, I've gotten used to KDE3, and I'm still using it. I've got a few problems right now, but one of the most annoying is this: I changed my Yakuake skin (I can't remember the name of the skin), and Yakuake became really slow. It can take even ten seconds for it to scroll down, which to me is a bit too much. The thing is, I can't change the skin back. Here's what I tried to do:
1. Look for the right file and set the skin from there. (Didn't work) 2. Delete the skin file. (Nope.) 3. Reinstall yakuake. (Nope, same skin.)
Now okay kde4-yakuake is an option. However I feel like this is something I should be able to solve. My attempts this far have been a bit foolish, but usually something works.
machine: kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ kde4 the top terminal is of Yakuake w/ "No Border" option already enabled the bottom is of Konsole w/ "No Border" option also enabled how do I remove all borders from Yakuake to make it resemble Konsole at the bottom so as only the transparent terminal portion is visible?
if not possible what is a better replacement to Yakuake that has true no border settings, as well allows drag/drop of texts into the terminal? Already tried Tilda but it doesn't allow you to drag and drop texts into the terminal; tried Guake but can't get it to work in Kubuntu.
what is the correct permission for mysql directory under /var/lib directory? I set permission using: Code: chmod 755 mysql but got permission deny error. What is the best setting permission for this directory so that I won't jeopardize security?
after i installed compiz, and enable compiz. a problem happen... my firefox (3.6.3) display it's kinda odd, it's like the firefox graphics has been cutted every i move to another tab, this problem occur too when i scroll the web page (the graphics cutted).
I've blown a couple of DVDs trying to burn them with correct file masks (directories and files are read-only). There doesn't seem to be any documentation for K3b (building the index doesn't do squat and the help says "The file or folder help:/k3b/index.html does not exist"). I can't seem to figure out a setting that simply copies everything the "way it is."
To clarify: I have two kernels, (a) one that "works" and (b) another that I am experimenting with. Each has it's own modules directory tree (in /lib/modules) and they are mutually incompatible ie kernel (a) will only work with module tree (a) and similarly for (b). I have two boot entries in lilo.conf which can be selected from the boot menu.
Now the problem is, what if something goes wrong when I boot to (b)? I'd like to be able to return to the safe option (a), but the current module tree is (b) and it won't work with kernel (a). I could use the Slack installationCD and rename the module directory (I presume this would work)but is there a simpler way, whereby I can select the correct module tree at boot time (or set it in lilo.conf)?
Im using FF 3.5.2 and Slackware 12.2. On certain web pages, for instance www.slackware.com, Firefox doesnt display the background image, but instead displays multiple images of the tool bar of Firefox. It doesnt matter if I change the settings to allow third part cookies or if I tell Firefox to get images automatically. When using Konqueror, the web-site(s) appear normal.
Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slakware 12.0 I have plenty of files like this:
Code:
$ file 23-1.mp3 23-1.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 23.0 tag, MP3 encoding $
All I want to know about a file like this is the bitrate is has been created with. Can this data be inside the tag? What's a cli program that lets me know that information?
I was wondering if anyone knew of a lightweight and easy-to-configure MTA, or any other way of sending messages from a command-line environment without too much of a fuss. I would only be sending messages through a single Gmail account, and would rather not bother with all of the sendmail configuration.
Can anyone recommend a Virtual Machine that doesn't require X that I could consolidate my servers onto? I'm playing with VirtualBox but it seems to need a GUI.
I burned the Slackware 13.1 DVD disk, and installed on a desktop, and it worked really great. Now, I would like to install 13.1 on my laptop, but my DVD-rom doesn't work. So is there any instruction for me to upgrade from slackware 12.1 (currently running)to slackware 13.1 directly, like what states in "Slackware 13.0 to 13.1 Upgrade HOWTO" ? Alternatively, is there any way that I can install slackware 13.1 from the ISO image file on my Windows partition? or I just following the instructions off this website, [URL]
