Slackware :: Select Correct Module Directory At Boot?
Jun 2, 2010
To clarify: I have two kernels, (a) one that "works" and (b) another that I am experimenting with. Each has it's own modules directory tree (in /lib/modules) and they are mutually incompatible ie kernel (a) will only work with module tree (a) and similarly for (b). I have two boot entries in lilo.conf which can be selected from the boot menu.
Now the problem is, what if something goes wrong when I boot to (b)? I'd like to be able to return to the safe option (a), but the current module tree is (b) and it won't work with kernel (a). I could use the Slack installationCD and rename the module directory (I presume this would work)but is there a simpler way, whereby I can select the correct module tree at boot time (or set it in lilo.conf)?

I would really like to install 2 or 3 PHP handler modules (suEXEC, FastCGI, etc) on a single server and assign which module should be used per virtual host or domain or whatever.
Is this possible?!

i installed firefox 4 and removed the old 3.X version. did a general update that my computer showed me was available then i noticed the first problem. firefox 4 would not launch when i clicked it, it would only launch when i clicked the gnome 3 applications button and then clicked and dragged the firefox logo to the desktop, then it opened. the second problem i am now having which at the moment is more bothersome is that after i closed the lid to my laptop and opened it up again after a while and logged back in and noticed that the ENTIRE gnome 3 environment was gone. no panel no menu nothing just the desktop and a few desktop icons. i tried the command "yum install gnome-shell" but it just sed that gnome 2.31.5-7 .fc14.i686 was already installed so it wasnt gonna do anything, then i tried the "gnome-shell --replace" command and it just said
failed to load "canberra-gtk-module": libcanberra-gtk-module no such file or directory.

lately I compiled the 2.6.35 kernel and met the following problem: the kernel I get it is a generic kernel so I have two generic kernels. I want to have a possibility to boot both kernels: the new and the old one. I cannot resolve the problem of a creating initrd as mkinitrd run for the new kernel would overwrite the initrd.gz generated for the old kernel. So , I make a new directory where I put this new kernel. Is there a way to have both kernels together in /boot ?

Im sure that this issue is pretty old and you get some results from forums when you google it, but I cant seem to find the solution : When I boot my system ( its duel boot , win7 / Slackware 13.1 ) the message : L 99 99 99 pops up. I know this has to do with the MBR, When I looked online this is what people were told to do:

When I learn shell script, I want to add my own PATH variable to system previous variables. I find that my linux has the below PATH variables (in the end of this message). It shows 'No such file or directory' although I verify that all the directories exist. Some directories are empty indeed. This will result that warning?
I want to make the present PATH variables correct before I add mine.
bash: /usr/lib/mpi/gcc/openmpi/bin:/home/jeff/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/jvm/jre/bin: No such file or directory

I have a couple directories in the following format:
+ Dir 1
----+ Dir A
-------- file1
----+ Dir B
-------- file2
+ Dir 2
----+ Dir A
-------- file3
----+ Dir C
-------- file2
+ Dir 3
----+ Dir B
-------- file2
----+ Dir C
-------- file1
My desired structure is:
+ Dir Final
----+ Dir A
-------- file1
-------- file3
----+ Dir B
-------- file2-1 [or something so that the two files don't overwrite]
-------- file2-2
----+ Dir C
-------- file2
-------- file1
Basically, I would like to combine all the directories that I can, without deleting/overwriting any files. I have looked at Rsync, but I could not find the correct options to do what I wanted.

I found it easiest to embed narp into the gtk+-2.0 installation because all I needed to do was tweak the Makefile.am and Makefile.in files and let configure do the rest. This is a hack. I've failed at getting my own makefiles to work.
Would anyone point me in the right direction on how to properly make an installer for Linux? Also, what is the correct/common directory tree for Linux software packages? Any more suggestions on proceeding with this project using community standards?

I have picked up a pair of usb speakers for my laptop that are detected as:
Code:
andrew@skamandros~$ cat /proc/asound/modules
0 snd_hda_intel
1 snd_usb_audio
and:
Code:
andrew@skamandros~$ dmesg | grep -i logitech
usb 3-2: Manufacturer: Logitech
usb 5-1: Product: Logitech USB Speaker
[code]....
but even when I configure the usb speakers with:
Code:
alsamixer -c 1
the speakers do not roar to life . I suspect I am missing something basic here and I would dearly like to be able to switch easily between the hda intel and the logitech usb speakers...

I have been searching for 90 minutes for something that I "think" should be fairly easy. I'm pretty new to Bash Scripting so I could be completely wrong. Then again it may be a weird request to even need something like this. But here it is.I have a script written to convert data from one of our software version to another. The only thing I need to add to it is a "check to make sure the user running the script is in the /tmp directory".

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

I am a complete noob in the Linux community, having JUST installed my first Linux distro on my PC (that being Slackware 13.37).That having been said, please be patient with my TOTAL confusion is this regard : How do I determine which version of a package I need to download (in this example, I will use Yakuake, a program I AM trying to find at the moment!). I have done searches on the internet of the type"Yakuake for Slackware", etc., and I have always found results that I believed were a link to the correct version. However, when I finally have the package downloaded (I have downloaded BOTH source packages as
well as the build app.), they are always for a DIFFERENT VERSION!
This is most frustrating...; is there a "listing" of different packages that are compatible with a specific distro / version? I realize that, in many cases, I may require a newer version of a library, etc., but again, how do I determine this ahead of time, before I bother downloading the actual app. I wish to install? I can use another example - I attempted to install OpenOffice; I began by searching for OpenOffice for Slackware / KDE (as some sources indicated that Gnome was the required gui for this package...).I found a site with an install cd .iso that was supposed to be multi-platform KDE compatible, but NONE of the versions would install on Slackware 13.37... - you get my point?

I've blown a couple of DVDs trying to burn them with correct file masks (directories and files are read-only). There doesn't seem to be any documentation for K3b (building the index doesn't do squat and the help says "The file or folder help:/k3b/index.html does not exist"). I can't seem to figure out a setting that simply copies everything the "way it is."

Im using FF 3.5.2 and Slackware 12.2. On certain web pages, for instance www.slackware.com, Firefox doesnt display the background image, but instead displays multiple images of the tool bar of Firefox. It doesnt matter if I change the settings to allow third part cookies or if I tell Firefox to get images automatically. When using Konqueror, the web-site(s) appear normal.

I came from the Debian world so I did not do much building software from source. I successfully built wine from source, now the wine binary is in the same directory where the Makefile and all of the other source stuff is. I can run wine from that directory fine, but I sort of want to move it somewhere else. I tried moving the wine binary somewhere else, but when I try to run it I get
[code]...
What all do I have to move into the new directory to get wine working in the new directory? By convention, where should I move wine, I want it available for all users, should I move it to /opt/wine, or /usr/local/wine, or somewhere else?

I have just done a clean install on slackware64-current and I am suffering some graphics problems.I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 card in my Laptop (Never been an issue before), however, the issue begins before I even start X server. On the first boot, the screen went purple then entirely blank.Second boot got me to a login, so I logged in and installed my packages. I started my WM (Ratpoison) and any attempt to start any windows resulted in an x-server crash and the message:
Module fbdev not available (Paraphrasing here). Is anyone else suffering this?I will note that everything works flawlessly on the previous current build.

Ran a dual boot with vista and fedora 10 and wanted to put something else on the drive that fedora lived on and in my ignorance just formated over the fedora drive (well...I wanted to see what would happen anyway ). Problem is I forgot the computer likes to know how to boot and now when I start it BIOS gives it's little screen and then goes to a blank with a cursor. What I think is going on is that the boot record is looking for something on my D drive and when it finds the formatted drive it just puts up a blank.
I'm told my vista disc has a utility that will fix the problem and boot my C drive where windows lives but I haven't been able to find it. I'd like to just change the boot and not lose any data so anything that would help me do that would be great.

I'm getting a new HDD today. I have SATA 500GB, and I'm getting SATA II 500gb. This is what I wanted to ask. On my first HDD, I have Windows XP and ubuntu and on the new HDD, I will install Windows 7. What I wanted to ask, are such things like jumpers on my HDD (master/slave etc.) used to select boot order? Or will I have to go into BOOT settings and choose Win7 Hdd first in the boot order etc.?

I want to try installing from a USB drive. I can create a USB start up easy enough. The problem is when I go into my my laptops BIOS and boot order set up there is no option listed to select the USB in the boot order. The "closest" option is "Floppy Diskette" which of course I don't even have!
How to set the USB drive as the first boot option or might it not be possible on this machine?
