Slackware :: Finding CLI VM For Running Servers?
May 10, 2010Can anyone recommend a Virtual Machine that doesn't require X that I could consolidate my servers onto? I'm playing with VirtualBox but it seems to need a GUI.

View 13 RepliesWe are running IPmonitor to monitor the disk usage on our Linux servers. It does not seem to coincide with what is reported when running df -h. For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.
View 5 Replies View RelatedKernel 2.6.21.5, Slakware 12.0 I have plenty of files like this:
Code:
$ file 23-1.mp3
23-1.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 23.0 tag, MP3 encoding
$
All I want to know about a file like this is the bitrate is has been created with. Can this data be inside the tag? What's a cli program that lets me know that information?
I was wondering if anyone knew of a lightweight and easy-to-configure MTA, or any other way of sending messages from a command-line environment without too much of a fuss. I would only be sending messages through a single Gmail account, and would rather not bother with all of the sendmail configuration.

So is there any instruction for me to upgrade from slackware 12.1 (currently running)to slackware 13.1 directly, like what states in "Slackware 13.0 to 13.1 Upgrade HOWTO" ? Alternatively, is there any way that I can install slackware 13.1 from the ISO image file on my Windows partition? or I just following the instructions off this website, [URL]

The dependencies listed are:
libx11-dev, libxt-dev, libimlib2-dev, giblib-dev, and libxinerama-dev
I've checked to see if the packages are installed w/:
Code:
I've also looked for any existing SlackBuilds, but the only one that showed up in the database is: "giblib"
Where can I look to find these dependencies, their sources, or determine whether they're already installed in Slackware64 13.1?
Also, how would one determine if this can compile for a 64bit, non multi-lib install?
Adobe Flash Player remains the security problems black hole. Are there open source alternatives, which are good in replacement for it?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI am a complete noob in the Linux community, having JUST installed my first Linux distro on my PC (that being Slackware 13.37).That having been said, please be patient with my TOTAL confusion is this regard : How do I determine which version of a package I need to download (in this example, I will use Yakuake, a program I AM trying to find at the moment!). I have done searches on the internet of the type"Yakuake for Slackware", etc., and I have always found results that I believed were a link to the correct version. However, when I finally have the package downloaded (I have downloaded BOTH source packages as
well as the build app.), they are always for a DIFFERENT VERSION!
This is most frustrating...; is there a "listing" of different packages that are compatible with a specific distro / version? I realize that, in many cases, I may require a newer version of a library, etc., but again, how do I determine this ahead of time, before I bother downloading the actual app. I wish to install? I can use another example - I attempted to install OpenOffice; I began by searching for OpenOffice for Slackware / KDE (as some sources indicated that Gnome was the required gui for this package...).I found a site with an install cd .iso that was supposed to be multi-platform KDE compatible, but NONE of the versions would install on Slackware 13.37... - you get my point?
I avoid capslock like the plague and use "ctrl:nocaps" when in X, and would like to have the same behaviour in the console. Back when I was using Debian I got it set up the way I want, but now I can't seem to locate the default keymap. I tried editing
Code:
/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/defkeymap.map.gz
and it works when I use loadkeys manually, but not on boot.
After several attempts in setting up the rc.inet1.conf using alienbob's site as a guide, I'd like to see a sample of a working setup. My setup is very simple: home router and a desktop wireless, with wpa security. Using wicd is snap, but I'm tired of dropping connections; everthing worked with slack 13.0, but this 13.1 dropping wireless connection is driving me nuts, both on the desktop and the laptop.

Any other web server request should go to the apache.
I tried adding the following to /etc/ufw/before.rules

Currently I'm debugging the whole thing, and I have a strange error that I can't quite explain.Sometimes when my girlfriend logs in, she gets some strange "Firefox is already running" error. The strange thing here is: ps aux | grep firefox returns absolutely no Firefox process. The only "solution" to convince Firefox to start again is to wipe her ~/.mozilla directory, but by doing this, she loses all her bookmarks and settings.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe "fg", "bg" and "jobs" commands all exist in slackware, and their definition of what a job is, is not simply "any old app that happens to be running", because they all tell me that there are no jobs running on my system.
So how can I get them to recognize a particular app as a "job"?
so I know this is probably one of the most asked questions from Slackware noobs, but i can't seem to find an acceptable answer to this question. How to get wireless networking, working under Slackware linux.I know the tools i should be using(ifconfig, iwconfig) but I have no idea how to use them. I know the init script that I need to edit but I'm not to sure where to get the information it requires, such as the ESSID.I am running 13.1 64bit. I know that the wireless network I want to connect to uses WPA encryption. As well I have never used Slackware before, I've had the most experience with CrunchBang, the problem being wireless worked out of the box for that.
View 14 Replies View RelatedJust a warning / question about Encfs on Slackware current. I doesn't work due to the upgrade to boost 1.4.2. I ran encfs on an old install of 13.0 to get at my data, but I'd prefer to access it right from current. A big warning: if you try to access your encrypted data on current it will corrupt your encfs6.xml file and I don't know if it is recoverable (I had a backup of mine).

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP in VirtualBox. I generally only use it for iTunes and some light browsing occassionally. Downloads only occur on iTunes, but it does have internet access. And my wife will still only use Windows, so if she uses this particular machine it is available to her, and she occassionally goes to facebook on this machine.
Should I install an anti-virus? Is it really necessary? I am pretty certain my Linux install would be unaffected even if a virus or other malware did occur in VirtualBox.
For some reason after I close firefox , firefox-bin keeps running and it eats more cpu than when firefox was open, a lot more. Same thing with seamonkey, seamonkey-bin keeps running after it is closed.
Attached are two pictures ,
1) While firefox is running: notice the low CPU usage
2) Firefox closed, CPU is almost 50%
I upgraded from 13.1. I'm using Xfce4, I've been using a button on my lower panel to launch xlock. Been working fine the last month. Upgraded to 13.37rc3.pi this morning.
Used my computer today for several hours today (after the upgrade). No problems. Hit my xlock launcher a couple hours ago, animation started. Turned monitor off. Then a few minutes ago, when I turned my monitor back on, black/blank screen, no password prompt. Killed xlock (had to use -s 9); no change. Saw xscreensaver was running, killed that too. No effect on my locked screen.
I then killed kdm and logged back in to an Xfce session. Back to normal now. I hit my xlock button. Got an animation up, typed in my password, and got back to my desktop no problem.
Here's something for starters:

I have a computer with Debian installed. I would like to install Slack on another partition. Problem - this computer has no cd and won't boot from a USB stick when the hard drive is connected (go figure...disconnect hard drive, it boots from usb stick) no matter how I set the bios.
I have a copy of the Slack DVD copied to the local hard drive. I can configure lilo to boot from ubnkern on the slack dvd file set, but that just boots debian using that particular kernel - surprisingly it boots, but is not how to get to slack setup. Given the above setup and restrictions, how would I go about getting to slack setup? I'm kinda stuck here, trying to figure out what to do next.
